“You were misled by people who did not themselves know what they were talking about. The Pope is correct, and he is preaching ancient theology. There was a very bad generation of Catholics in the West about thirty years ago that got a lot of things very wrong. I'm glad to see that the new Pope is starting to work on cleaning up that mess a bit.”

“He made it clear that we need a relationship with Him to 'get into heaven', as you put it, but nowhere did he make it clear that that relationship needed to be conscious or intentional. 'No one comes to the Father except through me', for sure, but that doesn't equate to 'no one comes to the Father except through an explicit and fully conscious awareness and acceptance of Me'.”

“There's a difference between denying someone or something and not acknowledging it - or not having ever heard of it. The modern atheist who rejects Christianity because his only experience of it has been the small-minded, vitriolic bigotry that makes up most of its open practice today (at least here in the United States) is perfectly right to do so. Most atheists I know personally reject it for precisely that reason; they regard me as an anomaly, someone who manages to be a good person *despite* being a Christian. If I were in their position I would almost certainly think and feel the same way, because I am not a small-minded, vitriolic bigot; I merely happen to have been fortunate enough to discover the undercurrents of genuine Christ-centered Christianity that still flow through the desert of modern practice. A person in that atheist's position is actually *affirming* Christ in truth by rejecting a Christianity that has ceased to properly reflect His presence on Earth in favor of things Christ actually intended - fellowship, peace, and charity.

Christ also said 'Not all those who say to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven', you know.”

“In general use, 'atheism' refers to the non-existence of the supernatural altogether, though the denotation of the word does merely mean belief in no god or gods. Buddhists, for instance, do not believe in a god or gods, but they are not generally called 'atheists'.

And anyway, 'redemption' in the sense of 'recovery from evil' has plenty of value without ever bringing life after death into the matter, doesn't it? Isn't it important to atheists as well as to Christians to overcome one's failings and become a better, stronger person?”

“Guys, do any of you know the actual facts of this case? We have two distinct sides to a story here, and neither one of them is fundamentally unrealistic. It's always better to reserve judgment until you have certain information regarding something like this. The hospital could be telling the truth; I work at a hospital, and it's perfectly common for family to cause trouble and need to be removed in order to provide proper care to a patient. On the other hand, it is also Missouri, and they might very well have been discriminatory. Without the results of an objective investigation, we just don't know; all we have now is accusations and counter-accusations, neither of which is more or less credible than the other.”

“Yup. After all, don't forget the part of the Bible where Jesus throws the first stone at the adulteress because she got herself in the mess. And the part where he publicly humiliates and turns away the repentant tax collector because he was a sinner. And the part where he throws Peter out of the disciples after his resurrection because of the denial. After all, pity is only Christian when the person suffering is innocent. Because there are totally innocent people. I'm glad to know there are still true Christians like you out there to keep us all straight.”

“In the parliance of Christians, 'faith' (especially when it is spelled with a capital) does not exclusively refer to belief in God's existence; indeed, since there are ontological proofs of his existence, it isn't, for everyone, a matter of faith at all. 'Faith' refers to a steady sense of God's presence and purpose, and the commitment to follow his guidance and will. A man doesn't say he has faith in his wife or his friend because he believes that person exists, nor does he mean that he doubts that person's existence when he says he has lost faith in them. He means something else entirely.”

“Here I have to agree with you. I have no patience for Christians with a persecution complex. But there are undeniably large sections of the (young adult) population who tend to demean the Christian faith, and sometimes also those who adhere to it. With good reason; the faith has been made a mockery of by its own demented extremists for the better part of four decades now, but nevertheless it does make being an orthodox believer a bit uncomfortable sometimes.”

“I do believe that there are people of faith who practice what they preach. I know of two in my life and I would never dream of denigrating their faith. For one lady, she is 65 years old and her faith is all she has. The others, though, whose hypocrisy and venality are wrapped in a veneer of pseudo Christianity that has God telling them who to hate.....they are fair game. As far as I'm concerned, they are cat toys and I'm going to bat them around as much as they will put up with on this internet machine. ”

“That isn't atheism. There's actually a specific term for it in relation to the lives of holy people: it's called 'the dark night of the soul'. It consists of the loss or withdrawal of the emotional and supportive elements of faith and the painful absence of any sense of God's presence or love. It has been documented in the lives of many of history's saints, including St. Francis of Assisi, and plays an essential role in the advanced spiritual growth of those seeking communion with the divine. This is in fact evidence of Mother Teresa's advanced spirituality, not of the weakness of her faith.”

Why Is Affordable Health Care Such a Bitter Pill for Some to Swallow?

“You are probably lying. No offense, but lots of people are either being paid or volunteering to spread disinformation about this law. Cite facts with documentation or gtfo. Anecdotes mean nothing.”

Cathleen Coursey Ginder on Nov 5, 2013 at 10:41:55

“Sorry, not lying, and not being paid! I seem to be one of the people that have to pay for everyone else! You are obviously a liberal, intolerant of any view that differs from your own, claiming others are "lying", or better yet, "racist". I guess that will be your next accusation without merit. My mother is 82, born in 1931, so do the math. For the past several years, her medical policy has been through Aetna, and her Drs. are at Arch Health Partners here in N. San Diego. In order to comply with this "law", Aetna & Arch could not reach an agreement, so they have dissolved their partnership. She has been assigned a new Medical group and Dr. who is located in Santee, which is a southeast city here in San Diego, approx. 40 minutes drive. Should an 82 year old woman have to give up her nearby Dr (about 2 miles) because of this ridiculous law? I don't think so, and neither do many in this country. Also, why should my family ( 2 parents, 2 kids) health care insurance go up nearly $400.00 per month, while our deductibles and out of pocket limits rise. More money, less care and benefits? I think you are the one that should gtfo, keep drinking your kool-aid, and see where you wind up in a few years!,”

“Unfortunately, my own experience has not borne out the conclusions of the study cited in Mr. Nelson's report. It is my experience that the majority of employers today do not care a fig for your problem solving skills or your long-term learning abilities or your ethical judgment. They care about how many years' worth of experience you already have in the field, and how quickly you can start making them money after they hire you, especially if it can be done with little investment in training. I've been turned down from one graduate program because my GPA (which, at St. John's, is assigned by a purely subjective process, since there are no graded tests or numerical criteria) wasn't high enough; I haven't been sanguine enough to try another one yet. If anybody has had good luck out of St. John's, wonderful. I haven't, and I'll admit freely that I'm a little bitter about it. I may as well have not gone to college. My only real comfort is that the curriculum provided me with excellent intellectual and contemplative coping mechanisms to deal with the financial hardship it has imposed upon me.”

“Take heart. I was really frustrated after I graduated from SJC too. No one understood the program, no one cared that I had read Kant. It was almost impossible to get a job. I ended up taking a low paying job, volunteering at a med clinic, and working at a book store. It led to another job (better paying), and grad school (Cornell). --- So, get some experience (volunteer, take a low paying job in a field you're interested in) take a few classes at a university so you don't get bored. Apply again to Grad School!”

“As artificial entities, unions will of course be subject to the same restrictions as corporations. Though as organizations of politically united individuals, I think it will give them a de-facto advantage over corporations, since union members have more natural incentive to solidarity in both voting and spending than corporate employees do. What is good for the union is almost always good for the workers, whereas what is good for the corporation frequently is not, after all. This is a good thing. Unions need the extra boost; they can't match the unlimited spending power and extralegal options that the multinational corporations have.”
