“This is the direct result of allowing mega-corporations to buy television and radio stations with little or no control by the FCC. Companies like Clear Channel (owns ~1000 radio stations) and Fox have approached broadcasting in the same way GM approached public transportation in the 1940s. First you get the government to allow you to buy up all the public transportatoin companies and then you operate them in a way that runs them out of business.
What ever happened to serving the broadcaster "public interest"? Oh, sorry, I guess that wasn't in the Republican game plan.”

How To 'Fix' The Sunday Morning Shows
Commented Dec 29, 2009 at 21:36:53 in Media
“Actually, what happens is that some right-wing hack pushes some kind of idiotic story into the blogosphere and then Fox News, not to be out done will pick it up without verifying the validity of the story (no time and still make it in the current news cycle) and use it as a source for a story. Once that happens the real media has to pay attention and of course as soon as the MSM pays attention then the Republicans can quote the story all over the place on the Sunday talk shows and even on the weekday morning talk shows.”

“As I recall, some of these shows are prerecorded on Friday or Saturday. (It's really hard to get those Washington types to drag out of bed to appear on an early morning news program.) Check it out. I have yet to hear about anything that happened overnight (except for the lead-in news summary). Face it, news shows (if you can call these news shows) are not really time critical. You can see that because MTP is shown delayed in the westward moving times zones so people can feel good about puking up their breakfast as they watch David Gregory toss softball questions at the guests and then fail to follow up on an answer that is so obviously nothing but spin.
My suggestion is tape the shows in real-time (or on Saturday) and then since these are really nothing more than a bunch of talking heads, use some of the 16:9 HDTV space to run a sidebar that points out where the response is the guest jerkin' the host and audience.”

“There are American laws that cover this and, as the person was on an American flagged carrier and inside American airspace, they should apply. When a foreign national commits a crime in the United States they face prosecution under the laws of the State and, if applicable, under Federal laws. This is no different than if you went to another country and committed a crime, You would be prosecuted in that country. The major difference is usually related to the legal rights granted to a person under the laws of the country. In the U.S. a foreign national can make full use of the court system and legal counsel (essentially they have the same rights as someone legally residing in the United States) while if you commit a crime in another country your rights may be quite different.”

“This is just another example of Bernanke not really understanding what is going on in the country. I could understand this is the unemployment rate was falling like a stone but right now small business needs that money to get the real economy moving again. Bernanke is only looking at what is happening on Wall Street and with his banker friends. He thinks that since they are making money again that the overall economy is in great shape.

What are they going to do... take a train, or boat, or drive? It's easy to do in Europe but hard to do when you are in the U.S. and need to get to a country on the other side of the ocean.
The communications companies should do okay because at least some businesses will be making more use of teleconferencing. However, sometimes you just have to be there to talk face-to-face. In any case, many companies are already making maximum use of teleconferencing to reduce costs.”

“You see all the changes in China because between 1983 and today we had all those "good" Americans sending their money to China by buying products from Walmart and the like. What did you think China was going to do with all that cash we're sending them, play Monopoly? Instead they have loaned part of it back to us so we could continue to buy their products and they could continue to shutdown our manufacturing and then they took the surplus and are using it to move their country into the next century. China is moving forward because we are paying for it .
Of course we also have the problem of pouring money down the rat hole of buying toys for the military. Next time think about whether you want new high speed trains and a modernized infrastructure or you just want to drop a lot of bombs on a desert and keep the military-industrial complex happy.”
