“I get so tired of legalistic discussionsof "rules of engagement'd
My eyes glaze over, when I hear the "history" of resolutions and violations of them dating back to the founding of the state of Isreael.
And if I hear even once more the language in Hamas' char.ter used to justify the slaughter of civillians; I'm pretty sure I'm gonna puke.
"Assymetrical warfare" is a sterilized way to describe the "ten-to-one" doctrine;
i.e....for every life we lose we will make sure to kill ten of THEM.
Any fool with eyes could see what took place in Gaza last January.....and no one needs a commission or a judge to tell them that turning loose a modern air force on massed civillians in a crowded urban setting is manifestly EVIL.
The entire operation was a "War Crime"

“Ya know I hear the President and others decry the fact that politics is too polarized today
That "demonizing"one's political opponents is counter productive
That compromise, conciliation, and bipartisanship are laudable goals.
And all that resonates with me,......... it really does.
And then I see stuff like this and it makes me want to tear my hair and shout:
Do you SEE?....Do SEE the kind of people were up against here Mr. President?
I don't just have a "political difference" with these people
These people aren't just "misguided" or posessed of an "alternative viewpoint"

How am I to REFRAIN from "demonizing" this sort of political opponent when he/she is so

“I'm an Oregonian....and I voted for Jeff Merkley.
That was not as easy a call to make as it might seem now.
In point of fact, I had my entire ballot filled out EXCEPT for the Senate race right up until election day.
It was a tough call to vote against Gordon Smith...who by my lights had done well by Oregon.
Smith was pretty progressive by Republican standards and I admired his coming out against the Iraq war as early as he did.
I like to think I vote for the man and not for the party, but the truth is, I voted for Jeff in order to give the President another Democratic votein the Senate.
One year later, I can't IMAGINE I almost turned down the opportunity to have such a STELLAR representavie for Oregon as Sen Merkley, and I'm very pleased by his performance to date.
The President's of course, is another matter, but that's for another day.
I hope Sen. Merkley will continue to "keep in touch" here at Huffpo & elswhere.
Around here, we like to think we "know" our Reps. and Senators a little better than folks in the mega-states do.....and Jeff's pieces here have vaulted him to "old and trusted friend" status among progressive Oregonians in record time.
Highest Regards

“I'm another Oregonian who's proud to have voted for Merkley. In fact, I'm very proud of several of our Congressional Reps and Senators these days, and very nice to see their points of view featured on national media, talking sense! My kudos to Merkley, Wyden and the forever endearing DeFazio. We have a few duds here and there, but these folks represent us well.”

“I'm an Oregonian and was not impressed with Smith, who voted lock-step with the Bush Admin when Smith was in office. When he interviewed, it was like he was giving the answer he thought would play the best depending on where he was. I don't remember his going against the war in Iraq until it was relatively safe to speak out. What particularly annoyed me was that he was not available to his constituents. You could not see him at his downtown office in Portland and if you protested you were thrown off the grounds of the building. The 1.3 million for antique golf clubs he bought, even if it was his own money, was a little off-putting as well.”

“Excellent post - I also thought long and hard because I believe Gordon Smith represented us well. It all came down to the fact that Smith is not pro-choice, and I knew that Merkley would always vote to protect our right to choose. I'm pleasantly surprised at his leadership and willingness to state his positions so clearly. We Oregonians are being well served by Wyden, DeFazio and Merkely. Go Ducks!”

Why ONLY these house members, and why only NOW.?
Of course, "comprehensive financial reform" is critical,,,,whatever that might involve....and it's good to know that Barney Frank is up there ramrodding that.
Events of the last several years have left us shell shocked
You never know if something called "The Omnibus Peace Freedom And Equality For All" act might turnout to be be a bill that gives Blackwater & other Mercenary-Type contractors blanket immunity from prosecution for mass murder, gang rape, and astronomical overbilling.
One thing EVERY Congressperson and CERTAINLY every ordinary American understands is that the Administrations five overriding priorites should be (in order):
jobs

JOBS and

The CBC should have the support of EVERY Democrat, (and plenty of Republicans)...in trying to push the President off the dime on JOBS on EVERY piece of legislation...every single day.. Apparently only the CBC has NOTICED that it doesn't seem to be OBAMA's first, second, fifth, or TENTH priority.

If the "drowning man" represents the American middle class then the free marketeers (and, to some extent, I count the Citigroup/Obama administration as such) remind me of those fellows with the metal detectors at the beach.
They will not interreupt their labors scavanging for the things of value ohers have lost,

But should we make it to shore, they'll be the first to shake our hand, and (hopefully in the presence of cameras and microphones) assert that they "stood ready to assist if it was REALLY necessary" and that they "Knew we could do it all along"...

Earlier I posted a link to the entire David Brooks column Greg cites above
entitled:"TheClassWar BeforePalin" (!0/9/08)..
.In it Mr. Brooks details some of the backround to the Republican Party's concerted effort to exploit the anti-intellectualism of it's base.....
And the resultant alienation of large swaths of the educated and professional demographics.
He holds Palin up as a recent and extreme version of this "dumbing down" process.
In context, it is NOT particularly flattering to Ms. Palin, and belies the idea that Brooks is a knee-jerk neocon idealogue.
For some reason that post never made it up. I'll try that link it again. If time is a factor, the reference to Palin is in the last 5 or 6 paragraphs.

“Aparrently I'm one of a minority of Lefties who likes David Brooks.
Brooks is usually a pretty good read, and has a knack for discovering and describing interesting trends, both social and political.
As for the hard-core neocon idealogue I often see Brooks desribed as in THESE "pages"?......
.I've read and listened to him for years, and I just haven't seen it.
He's very seldom shrill.
That's why, like Greg Mitchell, I found his choice of words here a tad unfortunate.
It's easy to forget that for some years Brooks had fairly steady access to Sen. McCain, and held him in high regard. After the Palin pick...it was clear to ME at least that Brooks was as apalled as the rest of us.
THERE'S a scoop huh? "Intellectual fails to see credible President in Palin"
I think it's unrealistic to expect Brooks to have more forcefully excoriated McCain publicly......both out of personal loyalty, and because of the first word in David's job description, which is "conservative".
Besides, there was no shortage of voices, (mine among them), trumpeting the rank ABSURDITY of McCains choice from the housetops.
In short Greg Mitchell and I disagree .....which doesn't happen all that often.
A Russian/American friend of mine has a phrase Brooks might like to borrow in response to crtiques like this one.
Roughly translated:
"I've opened my coat for you,......don't ask me to take off my shirt"
