60+ House Democrats Say "Any" Health Bill With No Public Option Is "Unacceptable"

Commented Dec 25, 2009 at 12:10:32 in Politics

“It's NOT over. The reconciliation is between a Senate Bill without a public option, and a House Bill WITH a public option. RECONCILING THE FINAL BILL TO CONTAIN A PUBLIC OPTION IS JUST AS EASY AS RECONCILING THE FINAL BILL WITHOUT IT. Both Bills currently have equal standing. The Senate version only seems more likely because it is the one we've been hearing about the most over the past few weeks. But if you want to roll over and take the defeatist' position, then look at it this way - we have nothing to lose by continuing to push our elected officials. The Public Option's obituary has been written many times in the past, only to have new life breathed into it when a significant number of us refused to accept the so-called "common wisdom" and reminded Congress that AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF US WANT A PUBLIC OPTION. Don't threaten to vote Repiglican or to simply remain home at the next election. They will only misinterpret that as meaning they should compromise, yet again, and move even more to the right. Don't Threaten, PROMISE you will support more liberal, progressive challengers with your money right now and in the upcoming primaries.”

“Thank you, Mr. Sirota, for stating the FACT that IT IS NOT OVER FOR THE PUBLIC OPTION. But more distressing to me than some of the House members who signed the letter have begun back-pedaling, parroting the "common wisdom" coming from the arrogant, self-proclaimed "politically savvy" fair-weather progressives in the mainstream corporate media, is the defeated tone my fellow liberals have begun to take, as evidenced by many comments in this thread. This isn't the time for us to be saying, "I wish the House progressives would take a stand, but they are going to cave" - that's simply capitulating to the common wisdom so we can claim we saw it coming. It's as if nobody wants to have our words thrown back at us if we keep pushing and end up losing in the weeks ahead. We're all VERY disappointed, and more than that we are all VERY tired, BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO RALLY AND GIVE THEM MORE HELL THAN EVER. WE NEED TO KEEP UP THE CALLS & EMAILS TO OUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS' OFFICES. I'm not afraid of having the Repiglicans and baggers make fun of me later because I know WE CAN STILL REVIVE THE PUBLIC OPTION. They are going to try claiming victory no matter what - they'll just try to rewrite history like they always do. I would rather be taunted for sticking to my principles than bow to the arrogance of the "common wisdom". WE CAN DO THIS!!!”

Yeah, it sucked. But it had cool giant robots and the best single-word laugh line at the very end. After Paltrow spends the entire movie carrying around a camera with only eight shots left on the roll of film, carefully choosing each moment to take the shots that will provide proof for the most unbelievable parts of her story, then as the biggest money shot that will tie everything up lays before her, she sacrifices her last shot to prove her love to Jude Law by taking his picture instead, he looks at her and says, "lens cap".”

“Wasn't "Sky King" supposed to usher in a new era of film making with live actors on 100% computer generated sets? The only thing I have seen come close to it is the SyFy Channel's "Sanctuary" and even they have opted for more real sets as they have gotten more production money. I'm not denying this is a ground-breaking advance in technology. But it will be a long time before it becomes more affordable than the current standard of live action blended with computer enhanced special effects. We are more likely to see more realistic computer generated games and commercials using this advanced technology than full length features.”

“One of the primary claims of those attempting to justify the hatred, fear, persecution, prosecution, jailing and even slaughter of homosexuals has been that homosexuality is "an unnatural act". By definition "unnatural" means that it does not occur in nature. But now when it has been proven that homosexuality DOES occur in nature, the haters cry "you're saying we're no better than animals". Nice example of yet another circular argument that does not hold up to logic.”

Cosatjockomo replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 18:03:54

“Saying something is an unnatural act is not to say it does not occur in nature. Just that it defies the norm. And one norm may be almost universal, while another is merely most of the time. Two headed goats occur in nature. They happen very seldom so they are very unnatural. Homosexuality seems to be a large enough sub-group, that unnatural seems strained at best, ridiculous at worse. In fact homosexuality is a perfectly natural way for a species to self regulate its own overpopulation.”

“You proceed on the false assumption that if homosexuality gains universal acceptance, everyone will become gay or those who are straight will simply lose interest in sex and stop procreating. Furthermore, under your theory, marriages between straight people who cannot produce children are invalid and wrong. Answer me these two questions:

Is the only thing stopping you from living openly and honestly as a homosexual the fact that you believe it is a sin?

Do you only have sex to create children?

If you answer "no" to either of these questions, then you have proven your own argument illogical. If you answer yes to either of these questions, you're a either mentally ill, or more likely, a self-loathing closet case.”

Add to that the fact that FOX Noise is part of most basic cable packages, especially in the southern and eastern states; whereas MSNBC is only included in most expanded premium cable packages. A lot of FOX Noise ratings are by default, among people who simply leave their sets on the same channel 24/7.”

“Gay bashing is alive and well in the USA and all too often the police are complicit, ignoring or even prosecuting the victims as instigators. A few years ago here in "tolerant" Honolulu, my ex was followed from a bar by 2 guys with Marine "high & tight" haircuts. Once on the side street where he had parked, he was grabbed, dragged into a parking structure under a condo and stomped nearly to death. He crawled to the street and flagged down a cop, who refused to call an ambulance and grilled him with questions like "what do you expect following two Marines into a garage?", before leaving. My friend drove himself to the hospital with 3 broken ribs, 1 had pierced his lung, a broken nose, broken eye socket, the skin from the corner of 1 eye split to the temple, gravel imbedded in the bone on his chin, and with limbs & internal organs so swollen they wrapped his body in pressure casts for 3 days for fear he could rupture internally and bleed out. After he spent 3 weeks in hospital I moved in to take care of him, as he was bedridden for 3 more months. The cop had noted in his log that my friend had been drunk and belligerent, with only a bloody nose. We filed a police report in the hospital, but no one was ever assigned to investigate the crime. Being gay can still get you killed? Hell yes.”

Will Gay Troops Get to Join the Debate About Their Own Service to America?

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 00:11:50 in Politics

“You do realize that many of your rationalizations were used to justify racial segregation of troops in the past. Furthermore, untold numbers of gay men and lesbians HAVE been able to and still do "hack it" as you say, this Air Force veteran included, many of them "hacking it" for twenty years or more, serving with honor and distinction. But just because one is capable of surviving a hostile environment in order to serve their country, doesn't mean they should. The ban on homosexuals in the military and the license to hunt down and persecute gay men and lesbians who heed the call to patriotic duty known as DADT create unnecessary stress and threaten unit cohesion in that they pit soldiers serving together against one another - knowing or merely suspecting a fellow member of the military is homosexual and not reporting it to one's commander is a punishable offense. How can that be anything but destructive to unit cohesion.”

WilliamL replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 11:53:31

“Factors which contributed to my decision not to enlist was the racist, homophobic, and generally hateful mentality I experienced living on military bases between 65-83. A mentality was exercised in our foreign policy. Some Vets fail to accept the fact that our f.p. during these years contributed to the motivation to attack this country.

In addition to Vietnam and Central America, US support of Indonesia’s assault upon E.Timor and their desire for Independence, contributed to reasons listed above. Ford shook Suharto’s hand the night before the invasion. CIA reports I have read declared the slaughter in E. Timor being the greatest proportional genocidal event of the past century. The US had their hands all over.

I walked away from a racist, homophobic, sexist, and hateful culture in 82 before I even graduated h.s. An A.L.I.C.E. and an M-16 was a financial ticket/opportunity but said no because I did not want to contribute to or participate in a racist, homophobic, and sexist culture that involved executing orders that either propped dictators, denied self determination and liberty, or advanced the economic interests of the US.

For all the good the US has done/does, it is not too tough to understand how US f.p. has angered millions around the world. It is interesting to see some so eager to participate in behavior that has descriminated against the right to life of others while declaring descimination themselves.”

“Look people, I am not saying it is right.

The military considers homosexuality as unaceptable behavior.

Perhaps it will change one day and wish you all luck in creating chnage.

At the same time, if one's primary objective is to be a soldier, one wd. not allow anything to prevent them from achieving that objective.

For those who believe this is the most difficult thing they would confront in the military, I honestly feel sorry for them.

The military is not a social organization invented to promote individualism or creativity.

I would gather that a good majority of those who are primarily concerned about being themselves and being openly gay would not be able to hack it anyways.

One does not enlist in the military to promote yourself and your individuality.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion by some.

Good luck.”

“While it is deliciously entertaining to watch the old guard of the pub party being devoured by the monster of their own making - they fed the radical, racist, far-right, fundamentalist beast for decades; saying "vote for us and we'll give you prayer in schools, an assault rifle for every child, and forced pregnancy through outlawing abortions", and then forgetting their promises once they got into office. But now the beast has risen and is putting extremists who actually believe in those things, like Bachmann/Palin overdrive. Yes, it is somehow satisfying to see honest moderate conservatives being purged and devoured by the monster they helped create, then to laugh as the radicals realize all too late that their purge has whittled down their numbers so drastically that they are practically handing the Democratic candidates the election. But in the long run it is not good for the Democratic party. Just like the pubs, when you don't have any serious competition, it's too easy for our elected officials to become complacent and dismissive of the "little people" who put them into office. It's far too easy for them to think of themselves as the only viable, sane alternative. Both sides need vigorous competition to keep themselves honest.”

“We all face varying degrees of adversity in our lives. The deepest cuts often come from family and close friends because they are the ones we trust the most. It's how we deal with the adversities we are faced with that defines us. Often the bravest thing we can do is simply to carry on, merely playing the hand one is dealt and choosing to survive because the alternative of giving up is unacceptable to us is considered bravery by others only because they are unsure how they try to imagine themselves in the same situation and are unsure how they would react. However, I believe that most people would do the same and just carry on. Still, I believe that merely surviving does not make one heroic - it makes us human. In my mind it is being able to accept ourselves worthy of survival within out own hearts that defines true heroism. In my opinion one cannot become worthy of survival unless we show compassion and empathy for others. Basic human empathy for others cannot be conditional or withheld because of differences in race, ethnicity, religion, social status, sexual orientation or anything else. Empathy must be unconditional or it is not empathy, just self-righteous hypocrisy. It saddens me to see so little empathy in this country, a country that was founded upon such ideals as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
