“That sounds so neat and rational.
But what exactly do you mean?
Something like this??
"I'm glad that Commander-in-Chief Obama is ordering more young men and women in uniform to fight and possibly die in the formidable terrain of a country where empires greater than ours have failed to prevail against the indomitable spirit of the Afghani people.
I hope the reason they are being deployed to Afghanistan is one which all Americans can support in good conscience.
I hope that if these men and women should be ordered to police the actions of civilians, that they kill only bad guys, leave the good and kind people of Afghanistan in peace, without maiming and killing their innocent children.”

“Thanks for posting this discussion.
I flinch every single time I hear civilian and military experts throw around that sanitary phrase "troop deployment" with numbers in the thousands attached to it. And we learned today that 9,000 men and women wearing the uniform of the U.S. Marines will be sent into Afghanistan to protect Hamid Karzai's government against takeover by the Taliban or other jihaddist Islamic groups.
Have I got it right? I do so want to get it right. A lot of us want to get it right because we want to know what our official reason is for endangering so many civilian and military lives. When the next airplanes arrive from battleground Afghanistan bearing the bodies of our wounded, our maimed, our dead, we want to know that they died for a just and honorable cause.. After 8 years of sacrificing their children to this "cause," Americans want to hear that cause redefined by this new President, who promised to bring CHANGE and HOPE.”

I don't think the Obamas should have served franks and beans. Just styled this down several levels from the Hollywood meets Bollywood tone. I'm not the only person who was offended, and am sure some had even more strident criticims of the event. And I don't think the Prime Minister Singh and his wife would have been offended if it had been less ostentatious. Look at how simply they were dressed for the occasion.”

Yeah, I read that aerial bombing will be reduced, and we'll be iimplementing more remote controlled robot technology. The only blood on the ground will be that of the Afghanistani people--and maybe a few Talibani. Makes me proud all over.
The priorities are all about whose outstretched hands will get US dollars as we buy our way out of this. Makes me proud all over.”

Nuff and well sed.
Afghanistan's doing it to me too. I'm losing sleep over it. Can't I just swallow the thought that thousands more of our children will be sent to Afghanistan to face off against people who present no real challenge to our national or economic security.
The longer we stay, the more they will hate us. And we don't hate them. In fact, we kinda like and respect their independent character and gritty resourcefulness. . So why should we escalate and destroy more Afghani people and their land? Or perhaps we should withdraw our troops and bring them home to their real lives? It's a no brainer for me.
And I thought I voted for a guy with maximum level brain function. It's most troubling, innit?”

Game? No sir. If this couple did not have a legitimate invitation to the after-party,then some people should get called on the carpet and fired. Given the anti-Obama sentiment out there, it's a serious matter.
Putting that aside: Why do you think Hollywood and music biz mogul, David Geffin, was seated next to the First Lady?”

“That struck me as a strange choice too, but then again it would be a place where a person could die and be on hallowed ground. The descriptions of this man made him seem like an exceptionally considerate person, so maybe he did think this way.
The sad bad thing he did was to mislead people into thinking that he had been killed by people who consider the federal government as their enemy. That stirred up a lot of anger and prejudice, and probably reinforced the anti-gubmint sentiment.”

“Hopefully a few of you can put aside your initial reactions, which seem to imply that I am an ignorant baloney head.
I simply do not think that this display of "majesty" is appropriate, given the state of our nation, and no amount of insults will change that.
This is a democracy, not an aristocracy.
I'm not saying that the President and his First Lady shouldn't entertain foreign dignitaries at state dinners.
I am objecting to the grandiosity and splendour of the display. I don't buy into that. It goes against my grain.
I think the Obamas are a charming and intelligent couple, who have the ability to represent our nation very well.
And for that reason, I wish that they would seriously consider the dire circumstances in which many, many people are living right now, and that perhaps they would have the sensitivity to tone down an occasion like this out of respect for the hardships they are facing.
And by the way, how does David Geffin get to sit next to Mrs. Obama?”
