“I wondered the same thing.
That article created quite an uproar and unleashed a lot of negative profiling towards Kentucky's rural population. Authorities are saying that the man who committed suicide deliberately tried to use that prejudice to make his death look like a murder so that his son could collect on the 2 life insurance policies he had. People need to learn about the outcome.”

“i'm still a bit skeptical. and suspicious. and cynical. I wanted to hear from the FBI before the Kentucky state police investigators piped up. They reported all these juicy details, only to report a month later that "oh, hey he could have just stood up and walked away. no suicide after all!" Like the lady who drowned in 3 inches of water. Turns out her husband DID kill her. If i wanted to kill a guy and make it look like a suicide hoax, maybe I might try creating my own real life CSI plot too? eh..maybe he was trying to commit insurance fraud, but honestly don't you think if he was going to leave his son all alone and also kill himself to commit a hoax to break the law...if he was going to screw the pooch this bad, wouldn't he have done a better job of it?”

“Your ability to look at yourself honestly is going to serve you and your family well.

I've got an uncle in his late 80's, nearing the end of his life. A solid, stalwart guy who served in the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. Saw a lot of combat. Never talked about it. Ever. Now that he is approaching the end of his life, it is all coming back in nightmares. He can't sleep, and even during the day, noises and sudden movements appear to be giving him flashbacks. Everything he stuffed is falling out of the closet. It is heartbreaking.

War is Eternal Hell, he says.
We who love him believe that he will finally be released from that Hell.”

“If my son or daughter died in Iraq or Afghanistan, or committed suicide upon their return, I don't think a Sincerely Yours, Barack Obama, President of the United States would mean a heck of a lot.

It's a symbolic acknowledgment which is ultimately hollow.
And if we should ever stop sending young women and men to die for policies which are questioned by the majority of our citizens, then it will be a totally unnecessary gesture.

After the parades and expressions of communal respect, the families of our veterans are faced with the bleak reality of their loss. A folded flag, a medal and a letter are cold comfort.”

“I tend to disagree. A letter of condolence from the President would show an appreciation of the soldier's service to his country. It would elevate the military's efforts on mental health services for soldiers and show the families support during a very trying time. While I agree that soldiers who commit suicide shouldn't be "honored" for their actions, the fact that members of our armed services have volunteered for service says a lot about their love of our country and their dedication to keeping it safe. And if the military put as much effort into mental health services as they do normal health services for soldiers, there's a good chance that the suicide rates would decrease.”

“And you are sure it was the flu? There was testing to confirm that it was the flu they came down with and not another respiratory virus producing flu-like symptoms (RSV, adenovirus, are rhinovirus are all capable of generating flu like illness).

2-weeks post-vaccination is also the minimal amount of time to generate an immune response. So it is quite possible that they had not yet developed a sufficient level of immunity to the flu virus, if they did in fact have an influenza infection.”

“I really appreciate the effort you went to in trying to answer my questions.

1) Why do you think there was such a rush to declare H1N1 was the cause of so many Mexican flu cases, when it now turns out the majority of sick people didn't have H1N1?

2) Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid and other big box pharmacy department dispensing flu shots still gives me the jim jams. .Nobody will ever convince me that these environments are sanitary, and I would bet the farm that people with risky health conditions will be getting vaccinated at locations like this.”

“"Nobody will ever convince me that these environments are sanitary, and I would bet the farm that people with risky health conditions will be getting vaccinated at locations like this."

I am unsure of your concern. The needle that you would be getting is as sterile as possible. Your arm would be swabbed with alcohol to remove any bacteria from the injection site. The nurse will be wearing gloves that are changed in between each patient. You would not get any more sterile than that in a hospital ER. There are far more germs potentially floating around a hospital than in your average Walgreens. Furthermore, this is simply an injection and not any kind of surgery where they would be an open wound. If I may ask, what level of sanitary conditions do you think are necessary for a simple injection?”

“Well then, you should really walk into the Walmart, look straight into the eye of the licensed Pharmacist, while keeping an eye on their diploma on the wall (which will be on display, it's the law), and tell them to their face you think they aren't qualified.

I'm sure they'll really appreciate it.

Walmart may use low wagers to stock the shelves, but a pharmacy still has to have a fully qualified Pharmacist on duty, by law. Otherwise they can't run a Pharmacy.”

“"Why do you think there was such a rush to declare H1N1 was the cause of so many Mexican flu cases, when it now turns out the majority of sick people didn't have H1N1?"

H1N1 was a cause of a large percentage of flu-like illness cases (~20%). That is a high amount for a particular virus, especially one that is new. For the CDC's May report of the Mexico outbreak, see here:

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5821a2.htm

It is possible that there was some error on the side of caution, but that is better than being on the other side of the coin if the infection was far more severe than it was. The CDC and WHO put out the information, but it was the media that whips that into a frenzy of fear that was apparent during that time.”

I guess I don't understand your concern. The needle being put into your arm is as sterile as it can be and the medical professional would be wearing gloves. Your arm is swabbed with alcohol to kill off any bacteria on the skin in the immediate area. You would not get any better than that for sterility even in a hospital. There's probably more germs floating around a hospital ER than what you would contact in a Walgreens. It is a shot, not open heart surgery. What would you consider a sanitary environment for a vaccination?”

“I would like to know the truth about the numbers in Mexico: how many people who came down with the flu in April actually had H1N1.

I would like to know why it is now safe to travel in Mexico (8 months after the outbreak) when CDC and WHO has predicted a "second wave of H1N1" that will be much worse than the first wave.

I would like to know how it possibly can be safe to get a flu shot dispensed at a Wal-Mart or Rite-Aid pharmacy.

I would like to know how many people in the USA, Canada and Mexico die each year from influenza. (not H1N1)

I would like to know how we can advise pregnant mothers that their babies will not suffer damage from the vaccination, when you're not supposed to vaccinate a pregmant mother for rubella, mumps, measles???”

cable1977 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 00:01:13

“"I would like to know how many people in the USA, Canada and Mexico die each year from influenza. (not H1N1)"

Disease information and statistics is compiled by the CDC and the WHO:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/fluactivity.htm
http://www.who.int/csr/disease/influenza/influenzanetwork/en/index.html

Every year in the United States, on average, it is estimated about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.

"I would like to know how we can advise pregnant mothers that their babies will not suffer damage from the vaccination, when you're not supposed to vaccinate a pregmant mother for rubella, mumps, measles???"

Basically because of the type of vaccine that is used. The MMR vaccine is a live attenuated virus vaccine that bears a theoretical risk to the fetus since the virus could potentially cross the placental barrier. It is for this same reason that the LAIV (live attenuated influenza vaccine) is not recommended for pregnant women. However, the inactivated flu vaccine does not contain live virus and is considered safe for women to get, especially considering the pregnancy complications that can occur from actually contracting a flu infection. See here for the guidelines:

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/preg-guide.htm

"One study of influenza immunization of approximately 2,000 pregnant women demonstrated no adverse fetal effects associated with influenza vaccine; similar results were observed in a study of 252 pregnant women who received inactivated influenza vaccine within 6 months of delivery."”

cable1977 replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 23:51:44

“I can't answer all your questions with statistics, but I am sure most of that information is available and highly doubt that people are withholding such information to make themselves feel powerful. You just have to know the right place to look for the information.

"I would like to know why it is now safe to travel in Mexico (8 months after the outbreak) when CDC and WHO has predicted a "second wave of H1N1" that will be much worse than the first wave."

Once the disease spread to a pandemic infection prevalent throughout the entire world, the risk of catching it anywhere was just as likely as catching it in Mexico. The initial travel restriction was an attempt to prevent pandemic worldwide infection with the disease. Since that did not happen, there is no reason to restrict travel, as your likelihood of contracting the disease is similar throughout the world.

"I would like to know how it possibly can be safe to get a flu shot dispensed at a Wal-Mart or Rite-Aid pharmacy."

As long as the shot is given by a medical professional (i.e. a nurse) it is just as safe to get it anywhere. The only concern is to monitor immediately after the shot for a potential allergic reaction, that can again be done anywhere by a medical professional. You don't need a hospital or any special equipment to administer a flu shot.”

US State Dept announces safe travel to Mexico since H1N1 not as virulent as first expected. NOVEMBER 2009

SEPTEMBER 11, 2009 From US HSS website: Early Results from Clinical Trials of 2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccines in Healthy Adults

We are encouraged by reports that are now emerging from various clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, conducted by various vaccine manufacturers. We expect additional companies to announce their preliminary trial results shortly. The early data from these trials indicate that 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines are well tolerated and induce a strong immune response in most healthy adults when administered in a single unadjuvanted 15-microgram dose. We congratulate the companies on these trials, which are an important part of the ongoing worldwide effort to develop vaccines to protect the public from 2009 H1N1 influenza.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, also is conducting clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, produced by Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited. The NIAID trials are testing two different dosages (15 micrograms versus 30 micrograms) and evaluating the immune response to one and two doses of these vaccines. More than 2,800 people are participating in ongoing NIAID trials of these vaccines. http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2009/09/H1N1TrialsResults.htm”
