What President Obama Is Reading On Health Care
Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 15:41:32 in Politics
“What I'd really like to quit hearing is how much money will be saved from health insurance reform. And be sure you understand that this proposed legislation is exactly that. What I'd really like to see focused on is the lives that will be saved, the number of US citizens who don't go bankrupt paying for health care, or how a healthy population is more productive. Now I'll wait for the thugs who also post on this site to try to take me to the woodshed. All they will show is a lack of compassion and love for their fellow members of this society.”

“This is part of Grover Norquist's wet dream of breaking the government so that all programs that are not either judicial or military are deleted, and those left will be privatized. Remember his mantra: shrink government down so it's so small you can then drown it in a bathtub. Beware folks.”

“What we need to do is to throw every bum currently in office out and elect real people that will shrink the size of this out of control government. We need to have term limits and do away with the large retirement packages for our representatives. A senator can retire after one term with a salary over $100,000 and free medical for the rest of their lives.
If we don't here is what the near future holds for us. The Dollar will collapse. This has already started with the falling dollar overseas. This will cause the economy to collapse and the only thing left will be government and the poor. Our credit will crash and we will have nothing to base our currency on. We have elections in 2010 and during that election we need to vote out all incumbents while we still can.”

“TN had a great program derived from Medicaid called TennCare. Our last Republican governor made sure it went broke so it was gotten rid of by the state legislature. Anyone who did not have health insurance could either qualify for the free care or those who made more money could buy into the program. It worked but then TennCare started paying for things outside of the intended scope of the program. Of course the Republicans threw a hissy fit yet making sure it went broke. End of program.”

“I am from TN and went to a Town Hall that Rep. Phil Roe held in August. I asked him this question: In Johnson County, Mountain City Medical Center, which is part of Rural Health Consortium, provides primary care and bases fees upon ability to pay using a sliding scale system. RHC serves 100,000 people per year. Would you be willing to vote to expand the number of such facilities in the US, both rural and urban, with federal funding? His answer amazed me. First, he stumbled and mumbled that yes he'd support such funding. Then he followed it up with that such facilities would only help with primary care not specialized medical treatment so they weren't the answer. HUH? Statistics show that primary care can decrease significantly the need for specialized care through early detection and treatment. As far as TN doing anything about these guys: Roe, Alexander and Corker. Why they're just good ole boys who do exactly what they want to do and using lies and brainwashing to convince Tennesseans that they're god's own doing god's work. Look up when Corker ran for the Senate. You'll get the picture really fast.”

Between this chicken little (the sky is falling; the sky is falling) attitude and regular folks being taken to the cleaners with little or no help from any governmental body, why should I care. Really? When I see real regulations coming out of Congress to control all this mess and then enforcement, I'll care. At least when the financial institutions came to FDR begging for help, he handed them a list of laws he wanted Congress to pass and told them to accept the laws or no help. Has anyone seen any bills signed into law yet that will do this? Thought not.”

“The US is one of the most violent countries in the world, and the violence is expressed in many ways. The absolute lack of compassion, caring, and assistance to the least among us is the worst kind of violence. I do not, in my wildest imagination, understand that many among those who call themselves my brothers and sisters in Christ tolerate, nay support, no healthcare reform. I do not understand how so many of my fellow countrymen can say that this lack of healthcare is their own fault. And I will never, ever understand why we put up with the lies and half-truths told about healthcare reform as well as the total disregard for our own. We send billions to provide free healthcare to foreign countries but let our own right here suffer and die for the sake of unregulated capitalism. Perhaps the real god of the US is greed and worshiped with the blood of innocents.”

How To Save Billions in Health Costs Starting Now
Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 08:22:15 in Living
“Good piece. Two short examples from my own life. In 1994, I was diagnosed with a possible cancer in my breast. The mammogram showed something. The doc said probably just a calcium deposit on your ribs and under the breast, but... I chose to have surgery, and the thing was not cancer but a calcium deposit. Pretty expensive, but I felt that that expense was worth it. With new technology, I might not need that surgery today, but then it was a different story. In October of 2008, I fell and ended up with 11 stitches over my left eye. The ER doc ordered a CAT scan to determine if I had broken any of the bones around my eye. I was in pain and scared so of course I said sure. The cost was $3000 of which I ended up being responsible for $800. Why not a simple X-Ray? Well, the hospital had a spanking new CAT scan machine, and they have to pay for it. Besides I have insurance and it paid most of the fee. No judgment just the facts.”
ClevelandTom replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 09:01:56
“I once saw a study of health care cost done in various urban areas around the U.S.(Sorry, I don't have a reference.) One thing it looked at were MRI's, CAT scanners and the like. The study showed that the greater the number of these machines per capita in an area actually drove costs up. Of course the laws of economics say the rates should go down.
In my opinion, this is just one of many, many examples that show that health care does not and cannot operate as a true market. Those that say that a free market in health care will lead to the most efficient system are crazy.
I realize that single-payer or similar is not politically feasible now but I predict that in 10-15 years, the U.S. will be forced to go to it because of uncontrolled cost increases in health care that will be sinking the economy.”

“I have, sigh, declined to post comments for a bit as some folks seem to have lost their grip on reality. However, here goes. We, as a group not individually, have become convinced that we are a.) units not humans, b.) may be bought and sold to the highest bidder, c.) are not worthy of being treated as sacred children of the creator, d.) should allow perpetual war that eats away at our humanity and our nations wealth, and e.) believe it is the best and most moral policy to allocate billions, nay trillions, of dollars to fight corporate wars but not to allocate a few billion, or even a few trillion, dollars to provide health care to every man, woman, and child in this country. I just read yesterday that big business in this country are fighting tooth and nail to get rid of reporting of the use of slave, incarcerated and child labor of products we import as well as pushing of non-enforcement of laws that prohibit that importation. Woe is me; woe is me. I looked for the devil and he was me. Is that who we are?”
