The Problem with Obama's Speech

Commented Sep 10, 2009 at 04:45:23 in Politics

“I have no doubt that people will take Cenk to task for his pointing out that the President didn't state clearly that the strong public option was a necessity in any health care reform bill that comes to his desk from congress. But I will say this: I heard the exact part of the speech that Cenk quoted - in my car. This was my reaction: "F@#$$K! He when soft. " When I got home, I listened to the rest of the speech and was very happy with what I heard (with the exception of the the Jerk from SC). Still I was left a bit worried that despite the GREAT calling out of Republican obstrutionism - including the use of the word "lie," to describe the most egregious examples, that the President is still under the impression that he can negotiate with those across the aisle and the so called blue dogs.

As Barney Frank put it in a post joint session interview with Rachelle Maddow - the bipartisanship that President Obama seems to insist on runs the risk of actually being anti democratic (small d), considering how thoroughly power was placed in the hands of the Democrats in November. I am not saying the Democrats should run roughshod like the Republican;s did during their time controlling both houses and the presidency. Let's hope President Obama immediately stops negotiating from a position of weakness, and starts using the power he was VOTED, and fights for a strong public OPTION.”

How (and Why) Ted Kennedy Might Have 'Compromised' on Healthcare Reform

Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 14:12:29 in Politics

“An excellent article - with a real and very practical compromise on a public insurance option. I like it because it actually postulates a real policy proposal - as opposed to just more bleating about the lies and fear-mongering.

What do we think the chance of a proposal like this coming out of the White House are? I wager slim and none - because I sense full Democratic knee jerk retreat mode that is the instinct of even Democratic Presidents - no matter HOW much the public is actually behind them. Well that and Rahm Emanuel's corporatist middle ground "compromise" needs.”

How the Democrats Should Have Handled the Health Care Debate

Commented Aug 20, 2009 at 21:40:19 in Politics

“WRONG. Every single poll says between 70 and 80% of Americans (and more than 50% of REPUBLICANS) want this bill....and want it to include a strong public option. as a matter of fact support drops below 50% only when you REMOVE the public option. Stop spreading untruths.”

How the Democrats Should Have Handled the Health Care Debate

Commented Aug 20, 2009 at 21:20:44 in Politics

“Umm... It isn't the blue dogs that originated the Republican talking points about death panels, socialism, Nazi style euthanasia, and a 'government run health care system." It was the Insurance industry. Why? Because when 77% of the country (including over 50% of REPUBLICANS) support something they KNOW they can't use anything like a truthful objection, and go strait to fear mongering: they are going to kill your handicapped children and your grandmother!!"

Oh....and you are damn right - the Republicans hold no real power and this should have been done while making it CLEAR they had no power and their input was not sought nor welcome, which was the point of Cenk's blog post. Unfortunately the instinct of liberals and progressives is to include people in the process - even people who have made it clear they are interested in nothing but mischief making. Again, Cenk one hundred percent right, zero percent wrong.”

“If you had been listening to Cenks radio show (The Young Turks) in XM Sirius or in the internet at www.theyoungturks.com, you would have heard Cenk saying EXACTLY these things from the start of health care push.

Just because YOU didn't here it being said, by Cenk and others - like Paul Krugman and folks at DK and Democratic Underground, doesn't mean it wasn't being said.”

Dynamohum replied on Aug 20, 2009 at 19:15:14

“Cenk is already late to the party!! You should have heard Obama's conversation and presentation to Organizing for America meeting this afternoon. We will have a public option!! Don't think so? I am going to love to see what you have to say when you are eating crow.”

How the Democrats Should Have Handled the Health Care Debate

Commented Aug 20, 2009 at 16:27:38 in Politics

“Yes, the Democrats and Obama have bent over....but not backward.

This is what happens when you deal from weakness and flinch at every feint offered by the opposition - no matter how small they are and no matter how much of the people (70-80%!!!) are on your side.

Cenk is a hundred percent right and ZERO percent wrong.”

RyanCSmith replied on Aug 20, 2009 at 19:22:36

“There is a poll that just came out showing 77% of Americans support the Choice of a public option for healthcare. That support has stayed steady throughout the debate. I think that said support has stayed in place and progressives like us are keeping up the pressure has kept it in, but by appearing reasonable while egging on the GOP further the GOP has gone from loyal opposition to chewing the carpet crazy. Said carpet-chewing, once something this enormously popular is passed, will haunt them in 2010 and hamstring them for at least a generation.”

middleoftheroad replied on Aug 20, 2009 at 16:51:02

“FIRST OFF, the problem right now is with YOUR OWN PARTY...LIBERALS vs BLUE DOGS....What power do the GOP have in this????? SECOND, Where have they bent over? Its the progressive left that throws out that the Public Option is a compromise from Single Payer...what planet are they on to think Single Payer has ANY chance...I hope you try to go with a single payer...you think you are having a problem with Blue Dogs now???”

While you are at it, hope that they do not call in Homeland Security - Halliburton and Blackwater CS - to herd you back inside or into one of those concentration camps they have built all over the US.”

“How many times does the man have to denounce and reject Bill Ayers' actions form the 60's? He has done so multiple times and the associations aren't secret obviously because we are TALKING ABOUT THEM!!!. Honestly.

Have you EVER tried to prove a negative?

And all of this is beside the point of the article: The McCain campaign has actually strayed into the territory of accusation that their opponent "pals around with terrorists." This is at a time when this country in engaged in a "global war on terror" - that just happens to be focused on people with names very similar to the McCain campaign's christian opponent. They have crossed the line into inciting violence. This needs to stop.”

Why McCain Has Caught Obama and What Obama Can Do About It

Commented Aug 04, 2008 at 09:02:30 in Politics

“Wrong, there a HUGE difference between the Republican in this race and the Democrat. Just one example: Barrack Obama would NOT raise taxes on families earning less than $250K, and would make there tax burden LESS than what McCain is proposing, While McCain would give those OVER $250 a big tax cut, busting the deficit even MORE wide open) and supplying a token cut (less than Obama) for those below $250.

Unfortunately, the American voter has become inured to actual policy, and sound bites rule the day. Like Cenk, I agree that Obama has to recognize that he HAS to FIGHT for this, not act like this is an exercise in philosophy. McCain and the Republicans aren't nice, and they aren't going to BE nice. Obama has to follow through with his great quote, and bring a gun to the knife fight. Because HE DOES have the gun in this fight. But he HAS to USE it.”

I am talking about the more baser instincts..

In essence ya'all are advocating that Obama act like a Republican, using Republican campaign tactics to win the election.

If a Democrat has to act like a Republican to win elections, what does that say for the Democratic Party philosophy??

I will stay home, vote for another candidate, or leave "President" blank.

Today's vote was a national tragedy, and millions will suffer greatly for it.

“He's NOT entitled to be President. He's IS entitled to be the nominee of the Democratic party for one simple reason: He won the Primaries. At the end of the day he has more pledged delegates and super delegates. Period. Even if you include MI and FL. THAT is why he is entitle to be the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States.

And in November, if he wins the Electoral College, he will be entitled to be President of the United States. Here's a life lesson: You win contests by being ahead at the end after playing by the rules as stated from the start. No legitimate victory can be had by changing the rules once the contest begins.”

“She isn't "being shunted aside by her party," she was shunted aside by the voters. Even if you count Michigan and Florida, she still trails in both votes cast and delegates won through the primary season. The democratic VOTERS don't want her to be their nominee. Listen very closely: Hillary lost because of HILLARY and the terrible campaign she has run. The poor financial management, the appeal to racists if they would only vote for her, the praise of the GOP nominee while saying Obama was nothing but a speech, taking credit for Bill's accomplishments while distancing herself from his failures, touting her failure on health care as experience and on and on are FAILURES of Hillary Clinton, not sexism on the part of the Voters or the DNC, not because of sexism.

And By the way, if you compare resumes in elected office Obama's record is both deeper and longer than Hillary's. True he doesn't have as many years on the public stage as Hillary but that is due to the fact that he is ten years younger than she is”

“Republican lite? You mean his co sponsored campaign reforms that became law from the US Senate? Or his fight through politicians and police, and even anti-death penalty liberals to get a law mandating the taping of ALL police interrogations in his state? As opposed to what? Not reading the relevant NIE herself, refusing to acknowledge that her vote for the Iraq use of force resolution was a mistake, something most of the people on this board new at the time or her vote on Kyle-Lieberman bill for similar powers to Bush regarding Iran?

If you want a shift from politics as usual and cow-towing to right wingers, you won't vote for Hillary Clinton's promise to continue the triangulation.”
