WAY back in the 80s I was a big fan of Reagan's. At the time, I believed that America needed to gain back some of the self-confidence that it had lost after Vietnam, Watergate, and the Iran hostage crisis. Having seen a good portion of the world since then, including living in Czechoslovakia and watching the last Soviet tanks roll across the border to go back home, I have come to realize that no single person - not even the President of the United States - is responsible for the revolution that overtook the world in 1989.

Did Reagan have a part to play? Yes. So did Gorbachov. So did Walesa. So did Havel. So did Schabowski (if you don't know who he is, Google him). So did the people of East Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and all the former Soviet republics who stood up and demanded that they be allowed to determine their own destiny. The question of whether Reagan was one of our great presidents, or whether he just happened to be lucky enough to be in office when the Soviet empire collapsed under its own weight is not for me to answer. But I do think it takes a remarkably narrow view of the world to assert that he single handedly was responsible for causing the collapse of Communism.”
