“The Republican Heroes page is a actually a very sad statement. It basically says, "We freed slaves only to side with the segregationists just a short while later. Aren't we a cool party?" Nope.”

“The cause of many unsolved problems is people thinking that each problem should have a simple solution. Some problems just have no simple solutions and no readily understandable recipes. This is true in any field of human activity. The sooner people understand it the better.”

dmack replied on Sep 15, 2009 at 10:06:20

“Thats not entirely accurate. The reason these problems don't have simple answers is because those in power want to continue the status quo. It is difficult to please the special interests and the people at the same time.”

“That reminds me how in Russia's version of one of those singing/dancing/cooking/whatever shows, they invited Vladimir Zhirinovsky to be the star. You know, the guy who said Russia will take back Alaska and that Russian soldiers will wash their boots in Indian ocean. Something like that. So because he was such a smart future-predictor and also a leader of a party in parliament, they invited him to sing or dance or whatever. Now we've got the same situation here, translated into American reality.”

“A lot of people talk sincerely and *appear* insincere. It's just that he's too eager to emphasize words and phrases that need no extra emphasis. And that's because, having spent most of his life in the military, he's not specially trained at political speechifying. In other words, he appears insincere exactly because he is trying to communicate to us and educate us too sincerely. That's the paradox.”

“I hate it when people refuse to have an opinion at all or admit they have an opinion, and then call their stories journalism, because it's supposedly just facts.

Imagine Campbell Brown's CNN-as-she-describes-it in the middle of the Civil War, simply reporting each side's story, without any pro-slavery or anti-slavery bias. Ridiculous, isn't it? Same goes for WWII reported without anti-Nazi bias.

Journalism isn't simply equal-time reporting of each side's take on things, it's something deeper, more meaningful, and that's what missing from CNN nowadays.

Besides, BBC, for example, does the unbiased reporting much better.”

“I am very much on topic.

Prejudice against actors is centuries old, and it is exactly that prejudice that fuels disdain (not even hatred!) for them doing anything else but entertainment. That is exactly what's behind Cafferty's comment.

While this particular prejudice has not done nearly as much damage as racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other such garbage, it's still comparable to all that vile stuff in that it creates the second, supposedly inferior, sort of people with respect to certain abilities.”

johnqsittinzen replied on Jul 09, 2009 at 22:41:44

“You'd do better not to mention those other isms in this context, tactful disclaimer or not.

Read my original comment: I wrote that Cafferty was wrong to engage in easy celebrity bashing. I am pro anyone speaking their mind. I am pro Al Franken as Senator, and Alec Baldwin as passionate advocate for whatever he puts his considerable mind to. I am against the kind of personal attack on Cafferty's past that has nothing to do with the argument you are trying to have with me. Eliminate Baldwin's first and last paragraph and I am in complete agreement with him. But that last paragraph was a mistake, completely gratuitous. And in your extreme words, vile, demeaning and disgusting.”

“It does seem like Albee's play, not "Virginia Woolf". Instead, I'm thinking about "Sylvia", with Cafferty as the husband who is in love with a goat (Cafferty in a dual role), while Baldwin is his friend who rats him out to his wife (Cafferty's imaginary fan base).”
