“Not only is he a great actor, but he is also a close relative of Tommy Douglas, the man who introduced universal healthcare to Canada.”

“In other words, Reagan indeed *was* a B-movie actor, but his not being on the A-list is irrelevant to his political views and political career.

He was a mediocre actor and bad (misguided, not unsuccessful) policymaker, but a good politician nonetheless.”

“I am very much on topic.

Prejudice against actors is centuries old, and it is exactly that prejudice that fuels disdain (not even hatred!) for them doing anything else but entertainment. That is exactly what's behind Cafferty's comment.

While this particular prejudice has not done nearly as much damage as racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other such garbage, it's still comparable to all that vile stuff in that it creates the second, supposedly inferior, sort of people with respect to certain abilities.”

johnqsittinzen replied on Jul 09, 2009 at 22:41:44

“You'd do better not to mention those other isms in this context, tactful disclaimer or not.

Read my original comment: I wrote that Cafferty was wrong to engage in easy celebrity bashing. I am pro anyone speaking their mind. I am pro Al Franken as Senator, and Alec Baldwin as passionate advocate for whatever he puts his considerable mind to. I am against the kind of personal attack on Cafferty's past that has nothing to do with the argument you are trying to have with me. Eliminate Baldwin's first and last paragraph and I am in complete agreement with him. But that last paragraph was a mistake, completely gratuitous. And in your extreme words, vile, demeaning and disgusting.”

“It's great that you won't make this argument, because while I'm not an actor I find the (very old) notion that being an actor means being a constant nonstop fake somehow vile, demeaning and disgusting.”

“It does seem like Albee's play, not "Virginia Woolf". Instead, I'm thinking about "Sylvia", with Cafferty as the husband who is in love with a goat (Cafferty in a dual role), while Baldwin is his friend who rats him out to his wife (Cafferty's imaginary fan base).”

The Myth Of Putin's Popularity

The Myth Of Putin's Popularity

“Compared to Putin, Yeltsin is a saint. (Well, everything is relative.) The events of 1993 were just act two of events of 1991, and I think he was in the right both times. The "shock therapy" was pretty bad idea, indeed, and the corruption was rampant, but at least basic civic and economic freedoms were preserved, unlike what happened under Putin. I think we'll see in the near future which one of them (Yeltsin or Putin) was better for the country, overall. I say history will judge Yeltsin the winner here, or at least the lesser of two evils.”

SiberianRat replied on Jan 01, 2009 at 10:55:35

“I doubt many Russians would agree with you, even ones who don't really support Putin. If if they don't agree with everything, there is a respect for Putin that is absent when it comes to Yeltsin, whom many Russians see as an embarrassment domestically and internationally.”

Skeetshooter replied on Dec 31, 2008 at 18:29:38

“Well, yes, if only because Yeltsin was too drunk to shoot straight most of the time. Peeyoootin has no excuse whatsovever, but much more power to rewrite history than Bush. -At least in the short run.”

“Someone somewhat famous (I can't recall who right now) has once defined porn movie as one where you become painfully aware of people getting into cars and walking out of doors.

Generalizing this definition slightly, I'd say this video is porn.

Hey, the whole Bush's presidency is porn by that standard, so why not this video, too.”
