“Drew, I hope you've put your post on the White House web page, it's something the president needs to see. I'll give him credit for one thing though, he sure knows how to make us bipartisan. Neither those on the left or on the right are happy with him now.”

“No one expects health care to be free! I'd just rather give the money to MY government than being forced to buy a product that's quickly declining in value, even as its cost rises.

Here's what I think is really happening. Current unemployment and under employment totals 25.4 million (BLS for Nov 2009) Most of those who lost their jobs or had their hours reduced, acquired their health insurance through their employment. That's a loss of 25 million customers to the HII (Health Insurance Industry). Not many businesses, or industries, for that matter, can tolerate losing that amount of business. The HII has to be in trouble, perhaps big time. So, we’re bailing out our HII just like AIG only this time there’ll some pitiful reform.

That reform is being sold as an improvement for us, the customers. But it isn’t! It’s a bailout and every bit as onerous as AIG’s bailout, on the backs of the American people. Even the few improvements it does have won’t be in force for four more years.”

“We don't wanna hear no more lies
About how you plan to economise
We want our dollar value increased
and Employment to rise
The nation's taxation
Is causin' all, all this inflation
Don't give us no peace sign
Turn around and rob the people blind
Economics is the issue
Do you have a plan with you?
'Cause if you've got a master plan
Got to vote for you
You're the man

(8 times, over scat singing):
Don't you understand?
There's misery in the land

People marching on Washington
when i hear what they have to say
'Cause the tables just might turn against you, brother
Set around Election Day
Politics and hypocrites
Is turning us all into lunatics
Can you take the guns from our sons?
Right all the wrongs this administration has done?
Peace and freedom is the issue
Do you have a plan with you?
'cause If you've got the plan
If you've got the master plan
Got to vote for you
Hey hey, got to vote for you
'Cause you're the man

“You’re The Man,” Marvin Gaye, 1972.

We’ve really come a long way since then haven’t we? Nixon was running for reelection which most presidents win. Then there was that damned Eagleton thing. McGovern’s running mate had been treated for serious psychological problems. McGovern was 1000% behind him just before he had to dump him. After that McGovern was an easy target, hell I even voted for Nixon! Good thing Nixon resigned.”

“First of all, thank you for your service to your country. Secondly, your reply contains nothing I can disagree with, I too find it hard to forgive the irresponsibility of deploying the same troops over and over and over. But worse of all is the deployment of troops without a definable mission objective. What we've ended up doing is conducting a war for its own sake. How ethical is that?”

“It's not the insurance that saves lives, it's the health care. If, as I wanted, our government had allowed the general public access to medicare with a buy in, we wouldn't have had to deal with the conserv-a-dems because it could easily been structured as a budgetary bill to pass the Senate as a budget reconciliation. ergo, only 51 votes to pass it.

That would have been easy and quick with no mashing of teeth. Everyone could be home for Christmas even if they started that process now.

You keep bringing up the lives the current bill would save, but how many lives are you willing to lose during the four year wait before the bill comes fully into effect. I may be willing to accept half-a-loaf but this one is unnecessarily moldy.”

GalapagosTortoise replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 20:15:31

“They could easily expand Medicaid, effective immediately, with a very simple piece of legislation, and many less votes.

They should open up Medicare for all, facing the reality that this has to be done through payroll and income taxes.”

Why Hasn't There Been a Progressive March on DC?

“Yeah Matt, I spent 2 days demonstrating on the streets of San Francisco against the invasion of Iraq. Man, we really stopped that sucker! GW went back to the White House and started passing out flowers and we all lived peacefully ever after. Walking down the street holding a stupid, insulting sign over our heads will give us anything we want. Sure, and elephants can fly by flapping their ears. By the way is anyone really paying any attention to the tea-partiers? I didn't think so.

All anyone who was the least bit interested in what the American people wanted had to do, is look at any one of the numerous polls where the "public option" always won hands down. Not one of those clowns in Washington who supposedly "represent" us, give a tinkers damn about what we think and that should make you mad too. I'm seething and I can't wait for the next election. “Back in the late 70’s a car knocked me off my motorcycle and my left femur was shattered. In the emergency surgery, I had two surgeons; one who wanted to amputate my leg, the other wanted to set it as well as possible and see if it would heal. The compromise was that they could do the amputation later if necessary.

We could do the same in Afghanistan. Pull our troops out now and see how well the Afghans handle the Taliban. We could always return if it became necessary. Officially we’re in Afghanistan to punish Al-Qaida for 9-11, but they’ve left, so it doesn't make sense that we're there. On top of that, I don’t like my tax dollars being used to kill Afghan peasants! Their lives are already short and mean enough without our dropping bombs on them.

Oh-my leg, I still have it and most mornings I run 3 miles with it. I was only in traction for 2 1/2 months.”

BraveWarrior replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 00:48:52

“Your suggestion begins with the premise that the Afghans need to handle the Taliban. The Taliban didn't just land in a space ship, they are Afghanis. Unfortunately for our interests they are part of the largest tribes in the area, the Pashtun. We are the invaders, the infidels. The Taliban were the umbrella organization that attracted Muslim combatants to oppose the godless communists. While no one can deny their religious zeal and extreme views they present the only current alternative to the corrupt government ruled by warlords, brigands and drug dealers. The Afghan peasants are not at war with the Taliban. Whatever the true motives we are at war with the Taliban. The crooks who work for us are the ones that have historically preyed on the tribesmen. Now flush with American dollars they constitute an ally of quislings, pretending to represent a federal government of a country that never really existed. Instead of offering schools, hospitals, sewage, electricity and running water we offer a rifle and a stipend .This is the gift of democracy we offer. You and your family won't starve if you kill your neighbors for us.
As a Vietnam era vet it is hard to forgive the abandonment of our troops to repeated deployments in a war zone. We violate the human rights of our own troops.yet no one speaks out. In 1984, Orwell showed us how perpetual war is a form of social control.”

Immigration Reform is Critical Part of the Road to Recovery for America's Workers

Immigration Reform is Critical Part of the Road to Recovery for America's Workers

“Here's something to consider. We have a failed state on our southern border. A failed state is one that can't or won't take care of the needs of its citizens. It is rational for the citizens of that state to move to a better environment where they can earn a living for themselves and their families. Since these people are here illegally, they are very exploitable by immoral employers who only want to increase their profits. Yes, they've taken jobs, but would you want to work for an employer who will exploit illegal immigrants? So what's the answer? They are here out of desperation, there's no way we can keep all of them out. And would you really want to work for the type of people who are hiring them? What if they were organized by a union? They'd have more power in the workplace. They'd be less exploitable, and less profitable to hire. Because they're now unionized, our tradesman would be able to return to those jobs as well. If you can just stop scapegoating....Think about it!”

AnimalLover6 replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 01:25:17

“The answer is: If employers were jailed for hiring illegal workers, those workers would go home. And the anger against their own government--for most of them, that's Mexico--would result in demonstrations in Mexican streets. Which might result in their government finally being forced to care for its people. Endless rounds of amnesty in the U.S. merely ensure that the flow of illegal immigrants will never stop.

Most important consideration: The population of the U.S. has already grown beyond sustainable levels. In fact, we reached that point in the 1970s. Very hard times are ahead for the next generation if this illegal immigration insanity doesn't stop. Georgia and California are already running out of water.

The authors of this article wouldn't give a hoot if the vast majority of the illegal immigrants in this nation were from Canada. It's very clever to publish a jointly written article, by one Latino author and one non-Latino author, in order to give the appearance of being race-neutral in their thinking. But their transparent concern is for Latinos and Latino culture, not for Americans (of all races and origins) or for the U.S.”

“Nativists are not scapegoating! We are asking for the same thing all people desire, a county of our own...not an international plantation that we so happen to be born on.

The suffering of the world is not our problem. Mexico is not our problem. Granted I think that we should improve our relations with all our colonial neighbors (and yes, mexicans are colonists), this is not the way.

The illegals are already organized. You are a day late and a dollar short, my friend.”

“Every time I hear or read some pollyannaish tract, I roll my eyes and sigh, "If only it were that easy." Don't get me wrong, I've been a member of the IBEW for all of my working life, even when I was promoted into lower level management and being a union member was not allowed. The union did right by me and I was more that happy to return the favor

The first question you need to ask yourselves is "How will this legislation ever get through the Senate?" It takes a super-majority to invoke cloture. How' will immigration reform be enacted when the Democrats (I'm one by-the-way) have perhaps 53 or so votes they can rely on. I see your challenge differently. How can you effect some of these changes without legislation that in the end will be impossible to pass and become just one more false promise.

Every time I go to U-haul or The Home Depot I encounter a phalanx of these "illegal" immigrants asking for work. I've offered them money, but few of them will take it, they are here to earn what they get. They are, in the main, decent human beings who I see as fellow victims of an immoral capitalistic system.

Why aren't you guys out there organizing them?”

childofTHANATOS replied on Dec 18, 2009 at 12:44:06

“Which them are you refering to? The illegals?

If so, they have plenty of organization and support. The very fact that our government refuses to even enforce its existing immigration laws shows you how much support they have. What about La Raza, La Mecha, the ACLU, contemporary American Acedemia...I could go on and on. The illegals are not short of support and organization.

This was never about their character, but since you brought it up. They have transformed this entire debate into a racial debacle. They have slandered ever opponent they have as either a racist or a race traitor. And in my most humble opinion, they have generated more racial divisiness in our Republic than the New Left and the KKK combined.

To the illegals, this is reconquista. To the immigrant advocates, the dawning of an international nation (whatever that is!!!). To our economic aristocracy, cheap labor and mad profits. To the rest of us, further proof that we are nothing more than serfs on a plantation: a people without a country.”

Why Public Health Care is Better than Private Health Care

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 23:57:24 in Politics

“When you buy life insurance, you are betting that you will die and the insurance company is betting that you won’t. When you buy health insurance you are betting that you will get sick and the insurance company is betting that you won’t. In either case, it is certain that the insurance company will eventually lose. Sharing the risk doesn't really work either, everyone eventually gets sick, dies, or both so the insurance company is left to take its profit from its cash flow and ends up running something akin to a ponzi scheme.

When people stop buying insurance or fail to pay their premiums, the company's cash flow dries up and the company is quickly in serious trouble. Think about this for a second, what has been happening in our economy that might affect the health insurance industry? Most of us get our health insurance through our jobs and we've been losing nearly a million of them every two months.Would this have an effect on the health insurance industry? You can bet it does!

Could this health "reform" bill simply be a bailout for the health insurance industry?”
