“Dr. Dean wasn't saying that we should quit, he was saying that the bill was too weak to accomplish anything and that it should be scrapped. Then we should immediately start again, perhaps this time we can find someone to hold our president's hand and get a little leadership from him instead of pretty speeches. Plan a way to get it done, there's always one if you want it, and then do it. Push that sucker through in a way that only needs 51 votes. Then you'll have a health insurance bill for the American people. Bipartisanship is way over rated.”

Dardango replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 00:19:06

“He was also saying the bill is what it is - a fraud, that keeps insurance cos. in position to continue gouge even more people.”

Romo2Austin replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 23:29:07

“So you want to spend another 7 months on healthcare reform? Yeah that is going to go over well with the voting public.

And for universal coverage you need to have the rebates. And that won't qualify for reconciliation. Unless you don't care about universal coverage, and wouldn't mind leaving 30 million Americans out in the cold, just so you can have a public option, which would only be available to a few million Americans in the first place.”

“No you won't go to jail for not buying health insurance but you'll have to pay a fine. So you'll have to ask yourself what's worse, being forced to buy a crappy product from a crook or paying a fine for not doing so. Because of our president's lack of leadership, the Democrats, as in you and me, are cooked geese. Put a fork in us; we're done.”

“I feel your pain! I'll be on my senator's phone as soon a they wake up tomorrow. I'll be notifying them that if they pass this bill they can forget about my ever working for their election again. Howard Dean has the right solution, Toss this bill, start over again, and work out a plan of action that gets this done. That means writing the bill to go though the Senate as a reconciliation. How difficult can it be to let any American buy into Medicare.”

“There are two states that have publicly financed elections which is the best form of campaign reform. One of them is Arizona but I forget the other. Actually, all elections occur at the state level. I'm pushing for California to adopt the publicly financed campaigns model, hope you'll do the same in yours.”

“Well, that was something of a jolt. If that's what Obama is doing, why is he dancing around it? Just who is playing who here?”

meko replied on Dec 13, 2009 at 22:38:59

“I think the President would sign anything that had Health Care Reform in the title.

Harry Reid supported Lieberman over the more progressive Democratic primary winner. Rahm put Lincoln and the rest of those Blue Dogs into office over more progressive candidates. This bill is the bill that those people want.

On the other hand, if there are meaningful progressive primary challenges, the Democrats are not going to be able to claim that the deficit is the reason they must cut Social Security and Medicare (as recommended by President Obama's reappointed Fed Chair Ben Bernanke). They might very well start listening to their base instead of Rahm's "where else are they gonna go?" philosophy.”

“The Democrats should have agreed on a bill and worked out a plan to get it through both houses of congress before Jan 20th. But I'm not talking about the health insurance bill, I'm talking about a bill establishing publicly financed campaigns and turns donations to our representatives a felony! Then, much more, health insurance, global warming, etc becomes possible.”

Vote ALL the incumbents out. That's the kind of shock our political system needs, because it would remind our government, our corporations, and the rest of the world that the people rule in America.

We already tried your way, and it didn't work. Time for a real change.”

Meanwhile develop a long memory and at the first chance throw the bums out. All of these "new" Democrats should be on their way out the door for selling out their constituents. “Oh gee! You should have left Bill Gates out of it. All I could think of was "Do I want to buy another crappy operating system from Bill Gates?" Do you really think that these people earn their money? I don't! Please do some research on all these 'self made men'. Family money and family legacy made these folks the bulk of their money. Bush and Kerry are both descendents of the Mayflower families--ten or twelve generations of sitting back and counting the checks after great-grandpa made his nut swiping things from Indians. Gates' family sent him to an exclusive private primary school that at that time was more expensive than Harvard. Trump's father owned huge chunks of commercial property in Queens. The Quayles. The Newhouses. The Gores.”

“We do have power over them. We can turn our backs and refuse to do business with them. When they buy a senator, vote him/her out of office. We can keep our children from joining the military. We can grow our own food or buy it locally. We can stop buying cars until they stop exploiting us in their dealerships. If we do enough of these things we can bring the whole monstrous, man eating capitalistic machine to its knees. So, pay down your debts, look for a small local bank or credit union to keep your accounts and be careful what you buy and where you buy.”

Hysterian68 replied on Dec 12, 2009 at 18:19:55

“Send a real message to the banks.

Take your money out. Stop paying loans and credit card debt, and buy gold and silver bullion, particularly the latter. From asia will come a serious effort to corner the world's silver supply.”

“Sanford, these are good suggestions. We must try to extract ourselves from the Machine as much as possible. Starve the beast just as the neos want to starve government and drown it in the bathtub.
That means no debt, no use of credit cards, barter, work off the grid, shop second hand, plant the old victory garden. I do realize that for many, many people this will be almost impossible. Unfortunately, circumstances will force many to live this way.”

“When I volunteer to work a phone line, I see lots of seniors working with me.

When I was working, I was a union member. Getting those benefits took courage and sacrifice, which are other words for striking. There was a time between 1980 and now when unions became very unpopular and began to lose members. Just the other day, I listened to a grocery clerk complaining about her $40.00 a month union dues while she checked my groceries. Even so, I know she's better off paying them that she would be w/o her union.

You must remember that your parents were subjected to decades of anti-union, anti-democratic, and anti-socialism propaganda and that acceptance of that ideology has become habitual.”

“Well wait a minute Loretta, I'm seventy five years old. I was one of the protesters of the Iraq war in San Francisco. I've written countless letters to the Contra Costa Times, The SF Chronicle, and The LA Times. I comment on several posts, but mostly this one, and I've done campaign work for Democratic politicians in this neck of the woods. I write letters and e-mails to my representative and senators and I call them on the phone. I've talked to both Feinstein and Boxer in person. I know what I stand for, a little Socialism will do us all some good, and I'm working for it!

Finger pointing has never accomplished anything! In fact, it's damaging; creating schisms where there should be none. Come on, won't you join me in this? It's our country and our government, if we don't work to save it, it'll be gone! And so will we.”
