One Year Ago, a Turning Point in 2008 Campaign: The Media, Hillary and Sarah Palin

“Actually, when McCain caved and picked Palin it became very clear he was not a maverick but rather a GOP lap dog. Who would do,say and follow any crazy advise given.... anything to get elected. Picking Sarah Palin was a going to get them 2 for 1...evangelicals and "simple minded" woman in general. It showed the way the GOP really thinks about woman. In reality the GOP were the Simple minded.

Of course now the PUMA have become the birthers, deathers, and every other kook you can think of.”

Its hard for people to follow an "Abstinance only" approach when children are being raped / assulted by people spouting that dogma.”

“The author of this article might be surprised that most of us know the real truth:. it was Bush's cronies and congress back in October that gave AIG the money for bailout and apparently bonuses. The bonuses were a matter of contract which added to the complexity if the matter.

What people are upset about is that AIG made crappy contractual obligations to start with.... retention bonuses should be tied to unit performance ... pure and simple. However, this is not the mentality on Wall Street. On Wall Street the big guys from EVERY company give themselves huge amounts of cash, big lunch meetings, expensed alcohol while laying off and cutting lower peon salaries....
There is no legal recourse for this kind of thing.

Years ago I remember Drexel closing down and sending people home without pay the day after the board gave themselves millions in bonuses for job badly done.... lots of yelling and screaming and the government did nothing.”

“I share your frustration, but the foxes are still in the hen house.

Geithner, as others have pointed out, was at the NY Fed before Treasury, while AIG was divulging its books. And Summers?

ROBERT WEISSMAN: Well, Geithner didn’t have such a central role, but Summers was really involved in the Clinton administration in a lot of these key decisions. Geithner was in the Clinton administration, more focused on international issues. But Summers, for example, was a very vociferous opponent of regulating financial derivatives.

[...]

Summers, Rubin and Greenspan banded together with Republicans in Congress, led by Phil Gramm, to prevent the efforts within the executive branch to regulate derivatives, and then in 2000, they passed a law—Congress passed a law, which Clinton signed into law, prohibiting the federal government from regulating financial derivatives at all, with the result that not only are they not regulated, not only are they not required to register to show that they serve some social purpose before they’re allowed onto the market, but no one has a sense of who owes what to whom.

[...]

They were engaged in such a wild speculative frenzy that they’d cut a deal with anybody. It turns out that the executives at AIG literally thought they would never have to pay out any money on these whatsoever.

“I've always felt that employment, housing and equal protection laws should be a priority. How can we address issues as gay partnership when we don't have equal protection on a national level yet?”

Steamboater replied on Dec 22, 2008 at 11:58:20

“Gay marriage should be accomplished on the federal level WillNYC but that will only happen when you have a president who doesn't speak out out of both sides of his mouth and tells you what he perceives you want to hear for political expediency. Obama doesn't accept Gay marriage yet he says he's a "fierce advocate" for Gay rights. How selective of him. How deceptive and manipulative of him. Save us from politicians who want the right to decide wat rights you can have and those you can't.”

Eriq replied on Dec 22, 2008 at 11:29:09

“There are MANY important priorities to be addressed, and that much is exceedingly clear. If one issue gains more attention, it generally is an indicator that a large amount of people--lots and lots of us--are fed up, sick to death of, and have had enough of, being treated a certain way. In this case, we're fed up with being treated as second-class citizens.

Get used to it... there's more to come, WillNYC”

You have to cross lines to communicate or are differences will never be solved and we will never see a medium. Perhaps Obama will point and show him things that may open his mind and eyes. Being enemies will never get you anywhere. I do not care for a lot right wing religious F A N A T I C S. A least this man is into the environment and he doesn't steel from his people. He writes a lot of books and sells them and he gives 90% of the money to people who are less fortunate. He is doing some good. I do see what Obama is saying. Thom Hartmann on Air America said a whole bunch of stuff regarding this and he makes sense. Thom explains everything better then I do. I don`t know if you listen to THE TOM HARTMANN show on the radio but he is really good with a lot of good information. It is Progressive talk radio (Democratic) AM station or check the net. I also love Rachel Maddow on Air America. Please don`t get angry and bitter. Barack Obama will NOT change his Democratic values just because of this man. He will keep his work wait and see. That's is 7% of play between them from their starting points... but I think the author didn't acknowledge the possibility that McCain's campaign has gone so full tilt over the top negative that he might actually lose points or stay where he is. Some are hypothosizing McCain campaign is starting to scare off some long time Republicans.

In order for the authors premise to really work... McCain would have to go positive and about issues and his campaign right now refuses to go there...

... if someone is undecided at this point chances are their gonna go with their gut this election...”

“McCain was the only one who knew Keating personally... and his wife Cindy had business dealings with him. He was not completely exonerated.. he was sanctioned by congress for his under handed activity... this also relates to Bank Failures and it show that when was between country and the Banking industry McCain a REPUBLICAN chose the Banks.... he was NEVER a maverick. He's always been a sellout.”

Ham1 replied on Oct 07, 2008 at 01:16:59

“In 1997 when the Keatings (dad and son) were on trial in Los Angeles over the Lincoln swindle that took millions from seniors I had the opportunity to see them close up after their day in court and they were laughing and joking as they walked right past me. They knew they would get off and keep all the money they stole. Gosh, I guess the Republicans know how to get away with all sorts of crimes: election fraud, breaking organizations, drowning government (Grover Norquist) and getting their parachutes ready while the country takes a bath on Wall Street. “we don't need to play their game: from Soon to be President Obama:
At a brief press availability in Monroe, Mich., ABC News asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., if he had any response to Gov. Sarah Palin's statement that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant.

"Let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people's families are off limits," Obama said, "and people's children are especially off limits.

"This shouldn't be part of our politics," he continued, "It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.

"And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories," he said. "You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and, you know, teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off limits."”
