Boehner: I Have Not Met One American Who Supports The Public Option

“My god, Boehner is one lazy politician. Remember before he became majority/minority leader? He was on the air all the time, trying to rile things up (see: Eric Cantor). Once he made it to the top, so to speak, all this guy wants to do is smoke cigarettes, play golf and get a tan. Good lord! He's making Fred Thompson look spry...don't bother looking for the tongue-in-cheek. He's too lazy to place it there.”

“Your argument hold little water, in my opinion. There is room for two-seat cars for young people and childless couples. Additionally, if driving SUV's and semi's were a deterrent, why would anyone even drive a honda insight or a civic? Neither of those cars will hold up against a semi, but really, is that what we are talking about? I welcome this addition and hope this is a sign of things to come in the near future.”

“On its face, I agree with the assertion that we can cover whomever is in the country (legal or otherwise). But, you and I both know that this presumption is untenable politically. For one, it creates the illusion of a "reward for bad behavior" for entering and residing in the country unlawfully. For another, it asks paying citizens (taxpayers) to directly fund others whose payments to the federal government can be considered dubious and indirect by and large.

In short, the better answer to "you lie!" is "how about immigration reform next?" --then we can reconcile your wish with political realities.”

“So, when taking prescription medicines, are any costs covered if you are an average person? So, you are saying that private health insurance does have a place in the Canadian system--with covering pharmaceuticals. Very interesting.”

BillSoo replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 19:46:29

“Since the expensive stuff is already covered (anything in a hospital....including chemo), the private insurers can offer a very reasonably priced product. We mainly use it for dental, vision and prescriptions.

My work pays for this supplemental but when I was unemployed, I bought supplemental insurance myself to make sure we were covered for these items. Let me repeat that....I was UNEMPLOYED and I could still afford it. And even on the private plans, you never hear of "pre existing condition".....”

JuliaRain replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 17:17:54

“Oh yeah, I forgot, private extended insurance can cover things like acupuncture, massage therapy, etc...”

Octoberluna replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 17:15:36

“Secondary private insurance is available and it covers such things as paramedical and physio and the costs of prescriptions that aren't fully covered by the provincial plan....yes it is true (sigh) we have to admit that there are some pretty pricey drugs here too...it also allows for dental and vison too, HOWEVER, average citizens with average medical drug needs are covered adequately on the Universal plan.”

JuliaRain replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 17:09:15

“Private extended insurance may be provided by one's employer and monthly premiums are very, very reasonable. They cover things like prescriptions, dental, glasses, private hospital rooms, etc... Depends on the plan.

For those who do not have private extended insurance can buy personal coverage individually at very reasonable rates. Great for the self-employed, contract workers, etc...

In Ontario, if one qualifies because of their lower income, the Trillium Program will reimburse prescription costs.”

“Alright, thank you for responding. If you do happen to come across this reply, can you give me an estimate as to how long an average wait would be (days, weeks, etc.). I only ask because I honestly want to make a factual assessment of the Canadian health system and how the average US health care experience compares.

After all the drama, it would be nice just to hear some facts. The above video is a nice example of fact-sharing (as told anecdotally, so not 100% accurate I am sure).”

As for waiting times:

http://secure.cihi.ca/cihiweb/dispPage.jsp?cw_page=wait_times_e

We are a vast country that has many rural areas. State of the art hospitals are usually in the main urban cities so we also consider travel time, costs too.

Maybe some more Canadians can contribute to your question with better info. Sorry I can't be of more help.”

“May I ask, about how long would an elective surgery take and what would be a good example of an elective surgery?”

murphyj87 replied on Sep 14, 2009 at 19:15:56

“I had vocal cord reconstruction surgery. I guess that would be elective, it had nothing to do with life span. It did have something to do with quality of life, but 16 days seems negligible for a surgery that has nothing to do with life span. From GP to specialist to surgery took 16 days.”

jeplanet replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 17:13:57

“Here in Alberta, our health service started a pilto-project to reduce wait times for hip and knee replacements by increasing pre-op teaching and post-op physio.
The wait time was reduced from 9 months to 10 weeks, and so the project was put into place permanently.
Often, our wait times are directly related to the shortage of doctors and nurses; something that all countries are struggling with.”

canuck lefty replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:53:21

“An elective surgery is any procedure that is prescribed for a non-life-threatening condition. One example would be cataract surgery, for which there is a wait time in the range of about 4 months. That's one that I know about, as a relative had to have it. I don't have any specific info regarding wait times for other procedures, but maybe there is another reader here who might? Again, in my opinion, a 4 month wait for that type of procedure doesn't seem unreasonable. And from stories I've heard from friends in the US, that type of a wait happens often for any number of procedures due to the wrangling with getting the insurance company to cover it. So considering we don't have any of that hassle, I don't mind waiting for something like that.”

JuliaRain replied on Sep 04, 2009 at 16:44:08

“I'm sure there are more informed Canadians here who can answer your question more thoroughly. Elective surgeries: friend had tubes tied, breast reduction for back pain, aunt had hip replacement. Very reasonable waiting times that to also accommodate personal schedules and situations.”

You stick around here and other places like dkos or thenation.com and you might get the impression that people are all in favor of huge government programs that attempt to solve societal problems. But, friend, it's just not like that. You have heard the president continue to reiterate his desire for this public option. But, the president is not Congress. If Congress doesn't vote for it, why not consider blaming Congress (or at least the individuals who didn't vote for it). That would be a start.”

Commented Aug 22, 2009 at 14:19:48 in Politics

“If you read the whole story, it basically says that there is some fear there will be skepticism if there is no bi-partisan bill. Well, if that is the case, the Republicans have only one option: oppose the bill wholesale. That way, they can look like they were just not "included" in the final bill. They have two of three plausible scenarios: 1) no bill and 2) a bill they can run against next Fall. My answer to that? Go with the third option: pass the bill and to heck with the near-term consequences.

If you believe that in the long-term the benefits from passing the bill far outweigh the consequences of next-term's election topics, then you take your lumps and get it done.

Honestly, House Republicans probably wouldn't have voted for any incarnation of the bill no matter what. They play team politics and they act largely in lock-step. There were only ever going to be as many as ten Senate Republicans who would have considered voting for something. And, in order to get eight of them (minus Collins and Snowe) you would have had to have it effectively protect and promote the insurance companies.”

GunneraGirl replied on Aug 22, 2009 at 14:28:20

“Dole says the 'public' will be 'skeptical' if the reconciliation process is used and there is no Republican input.

But Republicans are obstructionists, period, when it comes to anything but war and mayhem, which they all willing and eagerly sign onto, even when it means making war on their neighbors and fellow citizens in town halls across this country. So we know 'bipartisanship' really isn't an option.

So I deconstruct Dole's comment as : "public" means "republicans" (and anyone else who isn't part of the 77% who wants the public option). And "skeptical" to mean "put in their place".”

“Give me a break. You aren't actually serious, are you? I do feel for anyone who lives somewhere without a garage (a parking spot with a plug-in terminal) but what will happen over time is there will be public stations where people will be able to park their cars and "plug in"...think about a paid parking lot for an apartment building where you have your own spot or even "plug in meters" where you swipe your credit card or apply a little cash to get enough juice to charge your car. Also, think of gas stations that also become quick-recharge stations (5-10 minutes to get 50%-100% electricity). There's no reason to believe we won't adapt to the technology...and quickly.”
