Why the "Audit the Fed" Movement Is Dead Wrong
Commented Dec 11, 2009 at 08:53:07 in Business
“Interesting points, and ones that I have not noticed in the debate. I believe the only sin that I can put my finger on from the fed, is fighting against financial regulation under Greenspan. Don't get me wrong, I like the man, and he is brilliant. However his beliefe in the market regulating itself never sat well with me. Turns out in hindsight, Mr. Greenspan agrees that was a mistake. That being said, the above opinion points to issues that should be taken into account in the ongoing furvor concerning auditing the Federal Reserve system.”

“It seems disingenuous for critics of the audit proposal to not simply suggest that the results be available to only a select senate/house audit committee, or the like. Obviously we have confidentiality mechanisms in place to handle many other national security issues, including CIA oversight.
While it may make sense to argue that the results of the audit should not be fully available to the public (without, say, the approved release by a committee of elected representatives) it makes no sense to argue that 'we the people' should not have some understanding and oversight of how the private corporation that we have created to handle our money is operating.
Those ignoring this obvious solution make their agenda suspect.”

Eight GOP Politicians Parrot False $1,761 Talking Point on Costs of Climate Bill
Commented Sep 21, 2009 at 11:20:56 in Green
“How Much Cap-and-Trade Bill Would Cost Families
By Catherine Rampell
NASA
From our colleagues at the Economix blog:
Based on the version of the bill that the budget office scored — which distributes carbon allowances to businesses, households and governments — the net annual economy-wide cost in 2020 would be $22 billion.
The costs of new energy infrastructure and purchases of carbon allowances would not, for the most part, be borne by American businesses themselves. Rather, the office says, companies would probably pass on most of those costs to customers — in particular, American households — in the form of higher prices.
The cost per household would amount to an estimated $175 in 2020. (These numbers include the cost of compliance with a cap-and-trade program, but not the benefits that might come from reducing carbon emissions — so it’s hard to compare these numbers to the cost households would bear in the total absence of efforts to combat climate change.)
While the average cost per household is $175, or about 0.2 percent of a family’s after-tax income, not every household would be equally in the hole.
Some cash would flow to households as a result of a cap-and-trade system — directly, through energy rebates and tax credits, or indirectly, through the allocation of allowances. the poorest households would actually see a net benefit of $40 in 2020, whereas the richest families would experience a net cost of $245 that year:”

“I like this explanation. My only concern is many people have a very negative view of USPS. Actually, they do a tremendous job considering the volume they handle. Also you have to be ready for the challenge that USPS is loosing money, and is in allot of debt. Otherwise, your example simplifies the issue very well.”

“Will the private carriers deliver a letter across the country for less than 50 cents in 3 days? Sure FedEx will do it overnight for $15, but the USPS is a much better alternative in most cases.”

Senate Violates the Constitution in Turning Away Roland Burris

“This article is correct without question. I don't know what the Democratic leadership is doing here. They are only hurting themselve in this matter. Someone should remind Reid and company that they are very close to violating the law of the land. Seeing as they are lawyers themselves, it is hard for me to feel that they just don't know what they are doing. Obama is not above this either. He was a consitutional law professor for god's sake. Even if he does not like the "taint" that surrounds this appointment, the rule of law demands actions of us that perhaps we don't like at times. He shuld make it clear that the appointment should go through, and upon the next election he could back someone else if he prefers.
I'm really confused here. Hell, if they did not make such a fuss, the story would not have strong legs when you consider all of the other problems the nation faces right now.”

“Read some of the other posts. The Senate does not validate a member until the Secretary of State of the member' s state signs off on his appointment. Procedural this may be but that's the law. The problem lies in Illinois.
this whole matter is tainted. I'm surprised anyone would accept a tainted appointment. I'm Burris would want any part of it. I do however often mistake how strong ambition can be and how it often it leads us off our path.”

“As they are lawyers, they know EXACTLY what they are doing but are so absorbed with their own interests and little circles of power that they have forgotten who they are ultimately responsible to. Any doubt why politicians (especially lawyers) are distrusted and hated by so many?”

One thing to consider, say McCain's tactics work in the end, he would be the president of an extremely divided country, many of it's citizens believing that lies, fear and ignorance are the American way, and a way that works. That would be very sad indeed.”

Why Replacing Biden With Hillary Makes Perfect Sense for Obama
Commented Sep 15, 2008 at 15:48:40 in Politics
“The downside would not be a political one, but one of governance. What would you do with Bill?? Conservative, progressive, libral, or neo-con, tend to agree that we have but one president at a time. The chemistry in the white house is crucial to a working team. The Clintons and Obama would get along well enough, but suppose a situation arises when the president has to make a decision that is unpopular with the vice president. This is touchy in any situation, but imagine the friction when the husband of the vice president is President Bill Clinton. Once youre a president, you never loose the title you know.
So, while it is an interesting proposition, if Obama chose this route, he would be doing so for political expediency, and be putting the welfare of the nation behind the politics of the nation. We already have one candidate doing that.”

“Folks, calm down. BO should win this thing as long as we focus on the issues. Be loud about the issues and hammer them home. Volonteer if possible, and confront any lies you come across with facts. I am waiting for the next couple of weeks to see how the Obama camp responds, how his 527's are unleashed, how his ground network of volonteers are doing, and of course, how the debates go.
I'm and Eagles fan, but always noticed the calm devestating method of the Patriots. Most of their record was chareterized by a slow dismatling of their opponent. The other teams usually had some good drives put together, but the Pat's would never give up, and in a controlled manner, won the game by just enough. I'm hoping this is what the Obama campaign is doing. Still, change will not come unless we the people bring that change.”

“OK lets take your analogy. Imagine the Patriots playing Team R. Team R has 50 assistant coaches that run out on the field and yell in the face of every ref after every call. Team R has another 200 assistant coaches running up and down both sidelines with placards questioning the manhood, sexual orientation, patriotism and anything else you can imagine of all the players on the Patriots. Team R has control of the pressbox and after every play accuses the Patriot Coaching staff of spying on them. Need I go on.
Just how well do you think the Patriots would perform in that game, hmmm?”

“One thing Ms Marsh, I don't believe your argument allows for what "Affimative Action" really is. Affirmative actions specifies that if you have two candidates for a position, with EQUAL qualifications, the candidate that is a part of an under represented group, who's under representation is due to past and current bias, gets preference in admission. (Weather it is an employment position, or admittance to some sort of association).
Many people make this mistake, but the key here is EQUAL qualifications. Governor Palin's selection does not meet this criteria. Then again it doesn't have to. There are no specified qualifications for Vice President other than meeting the constitutional requirements to be president. This Governor Palin does.
Still, it is obvious that the McCain campaign has a lack of understanding when it comes to women. To believe that such a VP choice would garner substantial female support just because of gender identification is idiotic and insulting to women. Soooo, I agree strogly with the gist of your argument, though it is important to note this is an example of priveledge appointment, not affirmative action.”

On National Security Night, Clinton Keeps His Gun Holstered and Biden Fires Away

“I think President Clinton's speach was great, especially when taken together with Joe Biden's. Clintons statements do matter very much, and is crucial to giving Obama an opening to people who like Bill and Hillary but don't want to even listen to what Obama has to say. So while it is up to Obama to close the deal, it was necessary for the Clinton's to open the door. I think both Hillary and Bill did a great job in doing this. Joe Biden complimented the effort by hammering home the fact that on National Security Obama had it right when so many others, including McCain, did not.
As far as your dinner guest is concerned, my heart goes out to you. Here in New Jersey these close minded, misinformed, and dangerous with their vote type of people are more numerous than one would think. Just don't get too upset, or frustrated. Most will never listen to you. Many will not vote anyway. But some, may listen when you speak, and you may open the door to their minds just as Hillary and Bill did at the convention.”

“I agree. Oftentimes no matter what you say--what facts you may lay out--closed minded people have a vested interest in their presuppositions and illusions. The only thing you can do is to reflect your consciousness and perhaps it will plant a seed in those willing to accept an alternative prescription to the "party line".
Although I am loathe to generalize, I find that many so called "conservatives" have an innate fear of change. There is a tendency for them to stay within the accepted parameters of their mindsets and to pooh-pooh as "liberal" or "socialist" anything that challenges their narrow convictions.
Irrespective of the so-called "polls", I am persuaded that this race is really not as close as is alleged. Often these polls function as propaganda to actually influence and manipulate voters--not reflect which way they are really leaning. The mainstream media loves spectacle--and what better spectacle than a neck and neck race for the Big Chair? As for the so-called schism in the democratic party at this convention ... It's not without precedent nor is it necessarily fatal.
As for disaffected Clintonites voting for McSame....
