“Neither of you green background Olympic "experts" did an ounce of homework. First of all the loss of the Olympics was America's loss and it's roots go back to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The IOC and the USOC had a bad beef over revenue sharing. Some IOC members said then that it would be 20 yrs before America got the games again. That's why NY didn't get the 2008 games and why Chicago didn't get the 2016 games. Rio is an attractive pick because S. America never had them before, but truth be told Chicago never had a chance.

The stakes for getting the Olympics has gone up. Los Angeles made money, Barcelona made money, as did Atlanta and Salt Lake City. That being said, leaders of nations are under pressure to make a full faith effort to help get the games. London got the 2012 games, partially due to Tony Blair's appearance in Copenhagen. Obama simply put forth an effort that he deemed necessary because all the leaders of the other contenders went to Denmark.”
