“This is a very interesting article, and I love the photos that accompany it, but I have to nitpick about something. Amelia was born in Atchison, KANSAS, not Missouri. You say Missouri 3 times.

I grew up living in the next county over, plus my mom was born and raised in Atchison, and Amelia being from there was quite a source of pride for the city residents.”

“If there were any justice in the world, which of course there isn't, Jim Cornette's Rant would have gone viral and taught the Progressives a thing or two about how to get angry intelligently. I'm still bitter that he was ignored by everyone, Stewart, Olbermann, Maddow, Colbert, Maher, the bloggers who are supposed to be on top of everything...this guy should have been all over the airwaves, but no, he was ignored. Figures. It's just another indication of Democrats and Progressive's being too "nice" for our own good.

We could learn a lot from Jim Cornette. He's intelligent, articulate, smart, knowledgeable and passionate. So what if he's a wrestling manager? We need people from ALL walks of life to get riled up and make our opinions known.

“? Who are you chroma601?

Thanks all for listening to the rant. I really can't believe how it's been ignored. Why WOULDN"T people like Maher, Stewart, Maddow, Olbermann or Colbert want this guy on their shows? Because he's a wrestling manager? So frickin' what? He's intelligent, articulate, funny, knowledgeable, and he's reaching an audience that the above liberal hosts could never reach (well, maybe not Colbert, but for the wrong reasons, since a lot of mullets (as Cornette puts it) think Colbert is one of them). It's not only a great rant, a spectacular rant, it's an interesting story too.”

“Btw, I have no stake in this. I'm not into wrestling and had never even heard of Jim Cornette until this awesome rant, I'm just a fan of his intelligent, articulate, funny rant. It was only after I heard the rant that I found out what a legend he is in the wrestling world. To know a wrestling legend is so progressive made listening to the rant even better.

I've only heard the audio. I want to see him in action, which is why I want to see him talk politics on TV.

Please??

Passionate, informative, knowledgeable, articulate, amusingly profane, simply awe-inspiring! And if that's not enough, he tells all the wresting fans listening to go watch RELIGULOUS! We're NOT supposed to criticize a president who lies to get us into a war which has killed and maimed too many innocent people, helps destroys the economy and shred the constitution, and dozens of other VALID reasons to be against him? It's the right-wing with the Bush Derangement Syndrome, thinking he was anywhere near even a halfway decent president and human being.

Next Year's Oscars Will Have Ten Best Picture Nominees

Commented Jun 24, 2009 at 16:09:32 in Entertainment

“I think it's a great idea, and I like your list. I'd switch out Revolutionary Road for The Wrestler though. I love the actors and the director, but RR was not better than The Wrestler. I kept thinking, just move back to New York, you morons.

My own, laughably unrealistic, list:

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Changeling
The Dark Knight
The Fall
Frozen River
In Bruge
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
Tropic Thunder (I know I know, I *said* it was unrealistic)
WALL-E
The Wrestler

I know that list has some iffy titles. Tropic Thunder is not "better" than Doubt, which is a very good movie and deserved its nomination. It's just that I enjoyed TT more. I'm glad Robert Downey Jr. got nominated and I wasn't upset that the movie itself didn't get nominated. The Fall is not a great movie, but it did have the best performance by an actress, and was the most visually stunning movie of the past several years.

In other threads, people are saying there weren't enough good movies. That's crazy talk. I saw 170 movies in the theater last year and STILL missed some excellent movies I wish I had seen (like Snow Angels, Encounters at the End Of the World, and Trouble the Water, just to name a few). Fully 3/4 of the films I saw were worthwhile and at least half were excellent.

“What some people don't seem to understand about the gift of DVDs is that they weren't JUST DVDs. They were chosen specifically by the American Film Institute to highlight the best of the best of American film. He wasn't giving "DVDs" he was giving a gift of important American culture. Some people act like he was presenting a bunch of cheapo DVDs bought at Blockbuster from the pre-viewed bin, and were tiles like Die Hard 3 or Ace Ventura. They weren't. They were GOOD films, GREAT films, of all genres, reflecting American achievement in film. As a film lover, I thought it was a very thoughtful and unique gift.

And while I'm at it, all-region DVD players are ubiquitous in the UK, so it wasn't a gaffe that they were meant for Region 1. If the Prime Minister couldn't play them, and we don't know that for sure, it would have been an odd occurrence.

But then, some people will bitch no matter what, but there you have it.

And yes, the Queen did request the iPod (she's quite a technophile) and President Obama included footage from the Queen's last visit to America.”

stevensnell replied on Apr 25, 2009 at 19:48:19

“Angelina's lips are big, but natural. As has already been said, go find pictures of her as a child and teenager, they're easy to find on the internet, and you'll see she has the same lips. Her daughter Shiloh will be the same way. I think the trend started because a lot of women wanted their lips to look like Angelina's, to the point where now everyone thinks that Anglelina's are fake.

I loved No Country for Old Men! Even though There Will Be Blood was my favorite movie from that year, I'm still happy NCfOM won lots of acclaim.”

“Sally Hawkins was so adorable. Her movie is too.

"...delicious victories for Sally Hawkins, Laura Dern, Tom Wilkinson, Gabriel Byrne, and Mickey Rourke. How nice"

Mustn't forget Colin Farrell. He was wonderful in the film "In Bruge," a sadly overlooked (by the general public) gem of a black comedy. That win was also 100% deserved, and I was so happy for him, and the film. It needs the attention.

In fact, when people snark that they don't see the point/value of awards shows, that's it right there. They bring attention to the smaller films that probably didn't play too many places outside of big cities, so that people will seek them out on DVD, or gives films incentive to expand, such as Slumdog Millionaire, which will now get shown in even more theaters in the lead up to the Oscars. Slumdog could have just been an "art" film seen by few, if the awards attention hadn't picked up.”

I was also glad to see The Bank Job, Hancock and Frozen River up there. The Dark Knight is on my favorites of the year list too.

My very favorite movie of the year didn't get many good reviews and it came and went in the blink of an eye, but I loved it so much I saw it 9 times in the theater, and that's Tarsem's The Fall. It wouldn't be on a list if I were to make up a "Best of 2008" list, but it sure was my favorite.”

“I'm a straight woman, married for 27 years. I was born in red Kansas same town as Etheridge as a matter of fact, unfortunately). I've been supporting gay rights since the80's. I support Obama's presidency (his attitude about science is enough to make him light years better than the alternative) I'm infuriated by Obama's choice of Warren. It was mind-bogglingly, unbelievably insensitive on Obama's part.

Don't you people who are shrugging this off understand how hurtful this is? Millions of people had the elation of Election Day ruined for them when they heard about the horrific results in California, Arizona, Arkansas and Florida. It was shocking and painful to know there was still so much bigotry in the country on a day when the first black president was elected. Now, in another painful unexpected shock, Obama has made sure that the same people won't be able to enjoy Inauguration Day because of Warren. So what if it's only for a couple of minutes? It's the principle of the thing. Obama could have easily chosen a spiritual leader who doesn't preach hate. It's a painful slap in the face, and gays and lesbians have a right to be upset. It's not right, and people should have some empathy.”

“Fascinating article, thank you for it.

It says in the intro "Know of a great musician doing ground-breaking work outside the United States?" I do wish HuffPost had a section for great musicians doing ground-breaking work inside the United States too. There are so many, but I'm specifically thinking of a woman named Happy Rhodes (yes, it's her real name) who's been making highly original yet comfortingly familiar music for over 20 years, has one of the most phenomenal voices in music with a 4 octave range, writes lyrics that are meaningful, has 11 amazing albums, has a world-wide cult following, has one of the oldest music mailing lists on the Internet (going strong since 1991, an eternity in net years), yet for all that she lives a quiet life on a farm in upstate New York, has a day job hand-building top-quality pro audio equipment, and isn't after the golden ring of fame and fortune.

She was among the first artists to allow her work to be downloaded for free, since way back before the original Napster days.

http://www.myspace.com/happyrhodes is a good start, with many links from there. (it's an authorized fan page).

I don't have anything to do with her financially or professionally. I'm just a long-time fan. Forgive my rudeness for interjecting this in a World Music Comments section, but she is part of the world, and phenomenal but unknown American artists need love too.”

wisdomtom replied on Dec 27, 2008 at 23:25:25
