“The Jews in Lebanon are living in fear, as the article says. I'm not talking about the building here. Often, an oppressor will restore particularly beautiful architecture after the ethnic cleansing is done-- for example in Turkey with Armenian churches.
I am responding to the comments that more or less say "they had it coming" simply because they are Jews--and they link it to the actions of Israel. Let me add that I also deplore those actions.”

“It's not just about the building, but about people who hide their identity because of fear of persecution.
I'm as outraged as anyone about the misbehaviour of Israel, but this is a human story, not just about architecture. Lebanese Jews are stranded in a country that has been invaded by Israel. That is what I'm talking about.”

“If you are a compassionate person, you will extend it to all people who are in a tragic predicament. The people mentioned in the article surely qualify--it is a painful predicament, and the treatment they received is completely undeserved. Compassion is more than sympathy--it involves use of the imagination. It's in pretty short supply on this planet.”

KIVPossum replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 06:40:53

“If the Jews in Lebanon were being persecuted I would agree with you. Instead this article is about a building. A building destroyed by people of their same faith. I would not expect the US to rebuild a mosque on our soil after a terrorist attack, nor would I expect Pakistan to rebuild a Christian mission after if one of our errant drones hit it.”

MarcusT replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 01:14:28

“It's not over yet, Contessa. And it's not up to one man, ie: the President. I'm with you though on the fact that much of the US does not believe basic health care should be a right. THe sad part is that it actually costs less to provide-- if the insurers and pharma are not allowed to be so greedy.”

“Well, in Canada regular mammograms are on the program and there's no such discussion here.
When the CEO of United walks away with over a billion dollars (even after he returned his $620 million worth of illegally back-dated stock options) something tells me they can afford much more in real health care.
The insurers also have a fleet of Drs. on the payroll to parcel out treatment to patients they's never even seen. That money too, could be spent on actual care.”

Boycott Israel? Norwegian University Must Decide

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 16:05:49 in World

“We agree on quite a lot. And it will take more Israelis like you to urge their government out of occupation.
No one I know calls for the dissolution or destruction of Israel. Regarding Canada-- it hardly has a military, and is reticent to be involved in most conflicts, so the analogy is not accurate. People do and have called for the destruction of the US (and it looks like it could tear itself apart from inside). It has engaged in some terrible actions in the middle east, and there has been dissent over that. Yes, it is hard to hear strident accusations about one's own "family" even if some of the criticism is warranted. I felt that as an American here after 911.
Yes, lobbing mortars is criminal but it is a rare occurrence now and perpetrated by individuals. Palestinians are more concerned about being effective, and seeking peace. So far the elected leadership decries violence--some of them are imprisoned in Israel. Firing mortars is a crime against humanity. But so is collective punishment, destroying waterworks, sanitation facilities, and means of food production.
My point is that no one, Israeli or Palestinian should live in fear. Some of the leadership on both sides has been disingenuous. But it's time to recognise that the Israeli military should not be allowed to act with complete impunity, and that criminals firing rockets should be prosecuted. Hard to do when the infrastructure is destroyed.”

Boycott Israel? Norwegian University Must Decide

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 14:30:36 in World

“"It's all about COMMUNICATION, about the exchange of ideas, about cultural diffusion."
Then, why is it that the discussion of the Nakba (the expulsion of the Palestinians) is taboo in Israel? Why is the zionist viewpoint the only one allowed in Israeli institutions?
Yes, one can read dissent in Ha'Aretz, but the machinery churns on with impunity. House demolitions, destruction of agricultural land in the West Bank, private roads for settlers, hundreds of checkpoints and additional roving checkpoints, separating and choking the life out of Palestinian towns. The overwhelming invasion of Gaza, the military operating with complete impunity against an entrapped civilian population.

Yes, Israel is a vibrant and robust nation that should be able to exist without fear of attack. There is much to celebrate--but not its latest military actions. Israel is more civilized than that, one hopes.”

ZenJu replied on Nov 09, 2009 at 15:42:44

“Actually, many of us frequently discuss the Palestinian narrative and argue quite vigorously about our government's policies. And yes, there is much that I do not agree with...and I say so freely. Sadly, governments, like all institutions, are often resistant to change, and that mostly due to simple organisational inertia. I'm sure it's the same in many countries. But I'm pretty sure that no one calls for the dissolution or destruction of Canada (much less on a daily basis), no one questions your very legimacy, and certainly no one lobs mortars into Canada or preaches hatred of Canadians or...well, you see where this is going. Why not come to Israel, visit, see for yourself? Many Israelis seek the day that we're OUT of the West Bank and living alongside a genuine Palestinian democracy in peace and friendship.”

“I agree- I was once on a double date with a friend. her new BF was a hotshot psychologist and informed us that he had never had ANY other job- had not worked in high school or college, just went straight into his chosen profession and wondered why more people just couldn't 'focus' and do this.

He was SO rude to our waitress, every time she came by, we just cringed and tried to make up by being extra polite. You could tell she was sort of baffled by how he acted- she was very polite and a good waitress. When we settled up, he paid EXACTLY half the bill- and informed us that he did not believe in tipping and walked out.

We were stunned and quickly pooled up to tip the server. My BF and I decided we had 'another engagement' and couldn't finish the double date and my friend never went out with the guy again!”

“Yusuf's story and the stories of others like him will continue to be heard. There has been a shift in the way Palestinians and many of their leaders speak about peace with Israel. THey have publicly renounced violence. Once this is recognized, perhaps a Ghandi or a Mandela will come forward amongst them.
Brand Israel was damaged by the invasion of Gaza, continues to be damaged by the separation wall and occupation in the West Bank. Silencing opposition will not work. Many Israelis see this clearly. When the people on both sides are strongly for nonviolence, this will change. May it be soon.”

The Cruel Dilemma Facing the Jews of Israel

Commented Oct 11, 2009 at 17:29:53 in World

“Neither side has the best answer, but the news is pretty much controlled by Israel. Yes, each side thinks completely differently.
Fox reports on the "injury" of a peaceful protester (who died). The Fox reporter says it was a peaceful protest, no stones thrown. Fox shows an IDF soldier claiming stones were thrown. Then Fox shows clips of stone throwers from somewhere. Fait accompli.
Thing is, there is other coherent footage.
Try all you want. This is a case of overwhelming might.
And, I agree with you and Mc Guire (whom I've met)that the Nobel should be not be awarded on what a person might do, or as a repudiation of a previous regime. But Mc Guire also exhorted folks to support Obama in his efforts to end rampant militarism. Always a good idea. I also support Israel's right to exist in peace, and will support any efforts to curb its rampant militarism as well.
Anyway, done here, moving on.”

Is Your Digestive System Making You Sick?

Commented Oct 11, 2009 at 16:06:41 in Living

“Anyone with eczema, please NB. If you get continually itchy, and an attack that lasts a long time, or be over a large area (particularly without a rash) ask to be tested for lymphoma. If your skin seems a little darker with paler patches, this is also a red flag. The light color can be fungal--OR it can be normal skin, so both areas should be tested. A link has not been investigated, but many lymphoma patients have had eczema. Many lymphomas are very treatable and not aggressive. BUT there are also a couple of rare types, so if itching is all over and lasts for months, check it out. Lymphoma shows a high white blood cell count. Dermatologists are not necessarily hip to this.
As for eczema, tumeric capsules work for some people. Check it out online and decide.
Best wishes.”

“Acidophilus capsules with more than one or two strains of bacteria are most helpful. The kind that you find refrigerated in the pharmacy of health food store. They are ofter called "probiotics". The higher the cell count the better. 10 billion active cells is good. If suffering, try for higher cell count (these are not cheap, but worth it)
I've travelled through India, South America, Mexico, Indonesia andTurkey using 10-billion-cell capsules by Jamieson's and have consistently been well when travelling companions have succumbed.Yes, I shared and they became believers. Refrigeration is recommended, but when travelling keep them cool as possible-- they will eventually die off and lose their strength over a month or so in warm countries. Left in the sun or heat, it's over for them.
Hope this helps.”
