New Orleans Schools Ban Creationism, 'Revisionist' History Course Promoted By Texas

“This is encouraging news, but unfortunately, creationism is still alive and well thanks to a surge in homeschooling. There are thousands of children who are being raised on faith-based curriculum pushed on them by their parents. It's really quite shocking, but according to this article I've found, we still have a long way to go in this fight: http://empiricalmag.blogspot.com/2012/12/december-excerpt-homeschooling.html

“I will be homeschooling to prevent religious indoctrination and inadequate science teaching.”

John Boehner Fiscal Cliff Proposal Opposed By Powerful Conservative Groups

“Okay, am I the only one who is disturbed by the scary power these private groups like FreedomWorks have in our government? It is really unsettling to think that as wages for the working class are dipping lower and lower while the corporations who employ them are making obscene profits and then pouring them into our government and our elections. I read this article recently, and apparently Thomas Jefferson wrote, “What a cruel reflection, that a rich country cannot long be a free one." Food for thought. http://empiricalmag.blogspot.com/2012/11/december-excerpt-rich-country-by-hugh.html

“I'd say the cynicism comes from beliefs we have about what the government and business world do for us, and what our relationship is to them. I think if citizens were more engaged in both then these types of things wouldn't happen... but for now, we should just find new ways to make a difference on a smaller level. When the most powerful institutions see us do that, they'll know we still care.

“"As it did four years earlier, Amnesty International has again called for an international arms embargo on both Israel and Hamas. Once again, however, it appears Obama and Congress will ignore it."

I wish more people would come around to an idea like this one. Good on Zunes, I think he has the right attitude when he says to step back and stop supporting this violence. Having found his writing at this (http://empiricalmag.blogspot.com/2012/12/january-excerpt-interview-with-stephen.html) blog post, I'm glad it lead me to this one.

Even my Jewish family members are beginning to have doubts about whether the methods Israel used to retaliate against rocket strikes, which caused exorbitant civilian casualties, were worth it. The rest of the world should just cut both sides off for a while.”

Climate Change: Generational Evil (VIDEO)

Commented Dec 29, 2012 at 13:20:05 in Religion

“I've always struggled to understand why human-made climate change isn't viewed as a moral hazard. We have the Earth to take care of the best that we can, and to do any less would be a failure to creation (however an individual's religion or lack thereof prefers to describe it). It's impossible to ignore after hearing stories of parents fearful of the future for their kids (http://empiricalmag.blogspot.com/2012/12/january-excerpt-fiddling-while-rome.html). With the world that we have been given in danger, coming to its aid should be an act of faith.”

“I agree, Zoe. I started reading the article you linked but the rest of it was behind a paywall, it seemed. In any event, thanks for your comment.”
