George...what do you think the last * years of endless wars in Muslim countries and the blind devotion to Isreal is doing.
Please go and purchase a book called "Forcing God's Hands" by Grace Halsell. You can get it cheap on Amazon...this explains easily the phenomenon of the evangelical movement and it's great push into politics and foreign policy.
Read it in one evening.”

Don't Ask Me About Hasan

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 23:05:44 in World

“As I recall, Dick Cheney sent daily military briefs riddled with Bible passages and images to his entire staff... and let's not even get into George Bush intimating to everyone listening his code words for "this is a Holy war against Islam". The military has now become ultra conservative due to the past 8 years of war mongering and fanning the flames of ignorance. They knew their audience. Hell, I experienced the same thing in Quantico!!”

Don't Ask Me About Hasan

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 18:06:45 in World

“Dude...I say God is Most Great with everything I do... with the good and bad things that happen in my life - it is not, as you see it, as a cry that he is doing this in God's name...but the belief that the Creator is the beginning and end of all things.

Clearly, he believed his life was going to come to an end on that day - he emptied his apartment and said his goodbyes to people who had been kind to him. He didn't expect to come back just like many who feel their death is immenent in war or otherwise extoll the Creator of all things.

This has nothing to do with his faith but to do withwith how badly this man was harrassed by his fellow officers BECAUSE of his faith and their lack of it. You try being on the recieving end of that. I have - and it's awful and scary.”

Don't Ask Me About Hasan

“Well said, but Major Hassan and all the Muslims in the military have been experiencing this since 9/11. For myself, I think it's pretty clear he snapped...so in that sense I don't necessarily think he was a coward because I think he wasn't in his right mind

I also think that as a Major in the US Military you don't get harassed by a corporal or a sargeant. He must have endured that at the hands of other officers of his rank and above. This means that he could not go to his chain of command to report behavior that everyone "wink, wink" quietly condones. If anything it quite probably would have made his situation worse. In the military, it can be very exclusive, isolating and dangerous if you are not part of the pack. And what does this mean if he is going to be deployed with the very people that were making his life miserable?

The man joined the army out of high school to the disapproval of his family because he wanted to serve his country. I don't qet the picture of a coward - but the aftermath of this is devastating for all involved.

That's just the truth.”

“The Muslim community has NEVER been silent - the fact is no one would talk to us, give us air time or represent our point of views on matters. That's a fact. We've reached out as individuals and organization we can't get any real airplay and often what happened is they transcribed one line fully out of context and no other content.”

It's been 8 years of hell and the hits just keep on coming ... so many millions of us every day go out into America and try to make a positive difference as a friend, coworker, room mom or even as a stranger - then this crap happens by a singular person with some obviously deep issues and the whole community pays for like no other community except the black community -and they've been taking hits in this country for far longer than us

Ramadan 2009: America and Islam

Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 06:41:29 in Politics

“And honestly this is the Number 1 complaint of people from all over the world - that Americans never want to know anything, that we don't want to learn anything. They think we are a very dangerous combination of strength and ignorance.”

SadButWiser replied on Sep 05, 2009 at 09:47:52

“Not all of the Americans are like this. In fact a few are just like that. Most of the Americans that I know are nothing short of fantastic people with the most respect for other people culture. The US would not have become where it is it had not been for the fact that most Americans are very good people in many ways.”

“In many cases, you are right. I happen to live in a small pocket of "liberalism" smack dab in the middle of hick country. The reason people tend to be more intelligent and open to the reality of other cultures and religions and ways of life is because we are home to a large state university. People from all over the world come here to enjoy the celebratory atmosphere, the welcoming attitude, and the opportunity to share of themselves. Our public schools are so multi-cultural and multi-racial, the Middle School is having trouble finding all of the flags to represent all of the countries from which the students come! Much of the rest of the country is not like my town and that's a damn shame.”

Ramadan 2009: America and Islam

Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 06:38:29 in Politics

“It's interesting to me that many of these posts intimate that learning anything about anyone else is frivolous, does not belong in the schools. How ironic. These children will grow up and interact with all kinds of people who are D I F F E R E N T - and they will be I G N O R A N T of how many of those differences have many shared values - cultural values, moral values, human values.

I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, where I was the only dark skinned kid in my school, my mother looked white, my father looked black, my last name was Abdalla, we were Muslim - not so great in white, middle class America. I spent every Christmas and Easter at school on overload iwth the cards and decorations and feeling very much out of place - but I learned a lot about what people believed. And that is always, ALWAYS a good thing - knowledge.”

A Woman's Place, in Lebanon

Commented Jul 03, 2009 at 17:14:06 in World

“Can I just ask you why that is so surprising? Muslim women were given rights 1400 years ago that their Jewish and Christian counterparts STILL cannot theologically claim - yet and still, Muslim men (just as Christian, Jewish, etc.... men) still have usurped the God given rights of women and twisted it beyond recognition and used it to subjugate rather than to elevate and secure as was meant by Almighty God.
Women had the right to work. The right to keep 100% of their earnings. The right to not be forced into working particularly after children. The right to full education. The right to their own property. The right to their own business. The right do refuse a marriage proposal. The right to divorce. The right to be treated in fairness and kindness from one's husband. IT IS THE MAN who has the particular responsibility to fully provide for his family and the expectation to maintain his wife in the manner in which she was accustomed prior to marriage (i.e servants, drivers, etc.) , unless out of her own desire she chooses to forfeit that right.
The right of men to lead is not just a priveledge, it's a responsibility, a duty and a test on how they use and abuse that power. So far I see mostly failure in that area.”
