How about all of the historical and socio-cultural record of human existence? How about biology and tens/hundreds of thousands of years of evolution?

The imperfect institution of marriage, or whatever you want to call it, is much more profound than romance or sexual attraction or economic expediency. It is an innate survival strategy that has evolved to increase our chances of successful procreation. Maybe - just maybe, it has exhausted its usefulness (I surely don't know), or perhaps it should be amended in western culture to allow polygamy and polyamory or something else. But you shouldn't be surprised that you meet resistance when you try to turn it on its head. You are partially right when you assume that people opposed to gay marriage aren't 'thinking.' Its deeper and older than cognition.
