“I am thrilled they are on vacation. He has worked hard and EVERYONE deserves a vacation, even (especially) the President. Do you know him personally? You seem to ascribe attributes to him that only a close acquaintance would know. You can disagree with his policies, fine, but the personal stuff? Mean? Arrogance? (by the way, that word according to sociologists, is often used by white men to describe black men who don't know "their place") President Bush took vacations the year after 911...should HE have stayed home? Even though I disagree with Republican politics, he deserved a vacation. So does Obama. I (a white, female, married, small business owner) am thrilled that President Obama and his family set an wonderful example of family. I am thrilled that we reelected him. You have NO IDEA what happens here in this town, you have NO IDEA the difficulty of his job. You should be throwing stones at the CONGRESS (both sides) for taking a vacation after doing NOTHING!!!!”

“Why Almost Everything You Hear About Medicine Is Wrong
May 14, 2011
If you follow the news about health research, you risk whiplash. First garlic lowers bad cholesterol, then—after more study—it doesn’t. Hormone replacement reduces the risk of heart disease in postmenopausal women, until a huge study finds that it doesn’t (and that it raises the risk of breast cancer to boot). Eating a big breakfast cuts your total daily calories, or not—as a study released last week finds. Yet even if biomedical research can be a fickle guide, we rely on it..

“I do not contend that it is placebo but AGAIN, for argument's sake, what if it is? What if someone finds the only relief comes from acupuncture? You haven't answered that one either. And, by the way, you should read the below study (by a respected MD) who shows that almost all medical research is eventually disproven.”

“I am not a chiropractor but yes, my friend, chiropractors ARE trained medical professionals. They are licensed to diagnose and treat. You have a right to offer an opinion. I was just ascertaining whether or not you had an EDUCATED opinion. You don't.

Here is what I would suggest you do. If you are healthy, good. Stay that way. If you are not, go to the nearest hospital, have them pump you full of drugs for things like Type 2 diabetes (rather than have you take responsibility for your eating), let you sit on your butt (rather than tell you to get up and move your body) and eat all the McDonald's you can stuff in your body. This will certainly make the pharmaceutical industry rich and happy. DON"T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TRY COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE.... it might alleviate your suffering and make you really healthy! ;-)”

“Have a question Tony. Are you a trained medical professional or just someone
who wants to argue and found a page where people will respond? I am happy to discuss this with you if you are a doctor because you and I can look at the imperfect science that measures both of our modalities. Otherwise you are just standing on the sideline with no qualified opinion behind you.”

Tony Rochon on Oct 28, 2012 at 08:17:31

“I am not a trained medical professional and I would not try to diagnose and treat ailments.  Chiropractors are not trained medical professionals and they shouldn't either.  I have as much right as you do to state my opinion.  Don't get mad at me just because my opinions are based in fact.”

“Tony- There are two different ideas here. One, that acupuncture cannot be measured by double blind because we don't yet have machines that can place needles. We have people, and we would presume that people have to be trained to place those needles. End of this "double blind study" issue.

Now, your assertion that "acupuncture doesn't work" is interesting. If you felt better after acupuncture, when no other treatment has helped, does it matter? I asked you that earlier and you didn't respond.”

Tony Rochon on Oct 28, 2012 at 08:14:58

“We have methods to simulate needle insertion without actually penetrating the skin - these work as well as real acupuncture in studies.  It shows that it is all placebo effect. There is also the danger that people may use these "magical" remedies instead of something that may actually work in life threatening situations.”

“You are correct. The efficacy in acupuncture is very high, regardless of it "scientific study". The patient feels better, their symptoms abate, and we are all happy :-)”

Tony Ingram on Nov 26, 2012 at 22:46:38

“There are many reasons a person can feel better without them actually recovering from their illness. That's the problem with placebo - it can make someone feel subjectively better, without actually affecting the disease process.

For instance, the placebo effect can lower pain in cancer patients, but it does not lower survival rates. reference: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11742045

This type of article angers me too, because it perpetuates misinformation, which is very difficult to correct, and can be harmful.”

“Why would it make you angry? If someone gets relief and its only placebo, wouldn't you want them to be relieved of their suffering? The problem with acupuncture on humans is the "story" they tell about its efficacy. Look at studies of horses or other animal acupuncture. There is NO placebo there. They either get better or they dont. I am not interested (as an acupuncturist) in wasting time arguing with people who don't want acupuncture. I have too busy a practice with wonderful patients who find it useful and effective.”

“Where in the hell would someone be getting a hepatitis infection from acupuncture????? In case your ignorance continues to show, we use single use, sterile, disposable needles in this country. However, if you are getting surgery with autoclaved instruments in a hospital, your chances of getting MRSA are about 50/50.”

“Just curious. If you have had pain, or a chronic condition for years, have tried everything under the sun to no avail and you go to an acupuncturist and your pain/ condition disappears FOR GOOD, do you actually care if its placebo or the real deal? When I have patients who come in the door and ask, "Do I have to believe for this to work?" I tell them, "Actually, I would rather you DIDN"T believe because then you can just observe if you get better or not." We will most likely find a way in the future to accurately assess the efficacy of acupuncture. But, until then, EVEN if its placebo, I have helped hundreds and hundreds of patients have delusions of good health :-)”

Absaroka on Oct 27, 2012 at 15:40:49

“And I bet your effectiveness is about 80-90% right? There are absolutely no drugs which have that rate and surgery can kill and does kill (many die within a week of blood clots and strokes). In the next one hundred years, acupuncture and OM will become the prevailing standard of care for all chronic and pain syndromes I bet.”

“Actually, as an acupuncturist (and one that has worked for a major professional sports team) I can tell you that acupuncture can keep pain away for people with serious OA. I had a patient (who by film was a candidate for double knee replacement). She is running again now, mostly pain free and has maybe a one or two day flare once a YEAR. Her OA is still there and the doctors are baffled. This on top of a large study that showed that physiological condition (OA, herniated disks, ruptured tendons, etc...) do not necessarily correlate to level of pain. SO..... one may have a "condition" but it doesn't always account for pain/ no pain.”
