“There was huge infant mortality in the 18th century. But if one survived that I believe most made it well past 40. I've done a lot of genealogy on my family. Most lived to 60 or 70 or 80 or 90. I own a daguerreotype of a revolutionary war soldier who lived to 100 years 3 months.”

“Wrong. There are people born earlier who were photographed. Probably the earliest born to be photographed was a slave named Caesar. His daguerreotype is at the New York Historical Society. He was born in 1737 according to a census document. There are others earlier than 1749.

“Caesar certainly died in 1852, That is recorded accurately. That would have made hi 115 years old at the time of his death, pretty unlikely. Many people - slaves, native americans, immigrants- got their birth dates muddled. This is not to say the Caesar may have been the oldest person photographed, just offering a word of caution.”

Ben MCR on May 29, 2014 at 08:41:25

“The earliest was more likely John Adams, b. 22 Jan 1745. There is no contemporary evidence to confirm Caesar's alleged birth year, and it seems unlikely to be true. See http://benbeck.co.uk/firsts/2_... for more info.”

“"How many is too many?" is the correct question to ask.

Her 14 children will reproduce to eventually become an additional 2.1 million people, on an already overcrowded planet, a thousand years from now, assuming normal natality.

If just one messed up woman can have that much impact on future world population, we REALLY need to think more about the expanding human population and what it means for the future.”

violettefemme on Feb 16, 2009 at 21:29:00

“I bet half her kids won't even be capable of reproducing. 3 of her first 6 are on state disability already, as very small children.

The octos will have their share of medical issues as well, lifelong.

I feel less an urgency about her children reproducing than about what she has taken away from many others with her bizarre behavior.

She is a taker, and she is now taking for 15 people. People like her can never have enough of what someone else has earned. Just ask her own mother.

Poor 14 kids, nothing is their fault and I can't even imagine the future for them all.”

BilCon on Feb 16, 2009 at 19:57:58

“The question is not "How many is too many?," It is "How Many can you care for?"

The planet is not overcrowded, just cities.”

“It costs the state of Alaska $356,500.00 annually to maintain and staff the Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is where the governor of Alaska is supposed to live while serving their term. The State Capital, and legislature, is about a hundred yards down the street. Governor Palin prefers to live at home in Wasilla, over 600 miles away, and collect per diem, while the state continues to pour the money into the empty Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is not efficient or ethical.

“It's OK to spend trillions in Iraq, but any money for science should be questioned, according to McCain, who doesn't understand wildlife biology. DNA studies on populations of animals that are under stress (bears in Montana) are important. You must know the genetic relatedness between the different populations of a species, for management decisions. As populations of a species decline, inbreeding becomes one of the biggest threats to the survival of that species. This is money for basic science. The lack of understanding of basic science by the politicians, of both parties, is shameful.”

“I discovered today that former eBay CEO Meg Whitman was co-chair of McCain's campaign.

She so utterly destroyed eBay that now I'm sure that McCain doesn't have a chance.

I've been a heavy user of eBay since the summer of 1996, long before Meg ever heard of AuctionWeb or eBay. I watched her wreak havoc on eBay for years. Bad decision after bad decision after bad decision. The only thing she was good at was world wide expansion. eBay sellers TOTALLY HATE eBay management, and eBay would have been 10 times as large as it is now if any other CEO had been in charge. She is a total loser, albeit a very wealthy one.

John McCain, please be sure to do everything she advises!”

I ,too, hope she will do just as well for John McSame & his little Show Pony.”

“Sarah Palin is another one of those crazies that doesn't believe in evolution, even though they have never studied it. Across the nation they are trying to force their fictional creationism (renamed intelligent design) into the classroom.

It's sad that all of this pentecostal assault against evolution is only because of the church's doctrine of the the inerrancy of the bible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_inerrancy
According to their literal reading of the bible, the world can only be about 6,000-10,000 years old, therefore, evolution must be attacked. And boy, have they ever attacked it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Earth_creationism

If they were like most other Christian religions, and didn't insist on the inerrancy of the bible, there would be no need for stupid creationism or stupid intelligent design.

It's a good thing that the Republican party wasn't founded 12,000 years ago, of they, too, would be in the gun sights of the crazy pentecostals.

We must not let Palin, or any other Young Earth creationists, get anywhere near the presidency. Their belief in biblical prophecy makes them very dangerous.”

“Governor opposes Ballot Measure 4”
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=8885438

Read more about the proposed Pebble mine here (it's long, but please read the whole article)
http://www.fishalaskamagazine.com/archives/2008/708_pebble.html

Gov. Palin recently came out against Alaska ballot measure 4, a clean water initiative. It is illegal for the governor to take sides on a ballot initiative, but she did anyway, probably breaking the law. Her Department of Natural Resources web site had an information page that was clearly against measure 4, and they were forced to take it down.

Sarah Palin has been on television lately using the term "environmental extremists". That tells you a lot.”

“Gov. Palin recently came out against Alaska ballot measure 4, a clean water initiative. It is illegal for the governor to take sides on a ballot initiative, but she did anyway, breaking the law. Her Department of Resources web site had an information page that was clearly against measure 4, and they were forced to take it down.

Measure 4 was aimed at stopping the huge Pebble mine project, which scientists believe has a very high probability of polluting the watershed that drains into the largest salmon producing river system in the world, Bristol Bay. Palin's illegal stand against ballot measure 4, and the millions of dollars of misleading advertising by the two foreign mining companies behind the Pebble, who have a terrible track record of pollution, helped the initiative fail in last Tuesday's election. The Pebble mine, if allowed to proceed, will likely become Alaska's worst environmental disaster. The scope of this project is just unbelievable. Even the Juneau Empire (owned by a conservative Georgia newspaper chain) came out in favor of last Tuesday's ballot measure 4.

http://juneauempire.com/stories/082208/opi_321835314.shtml

Ballot measure 4 was an attempt to bring back the clean water regulations that were in effect before Palin's predecessor, former Republican governor Frank Murkowski, gutted them.

http://www.adn.com/money/industries/mining/story/501779.html

I guess it's not unusual for someone who doesn't believe in evolution to not give a darn about the environment.”

“Thank you, alaskankid!

I think the theme of gov. Palin's "public service" is: the only "public" that counts is big business.

Environmental restrictions might cost corporations money, therefore the problem doesn't exist.

Truth/facts might cost corporations money, therefore only lies can be true.

This is the fundamental compatability with McBush.”
