“"But the real irony of ironies is that, as I already mentioned, Lieberman and other conservative Democrats oppose the sort of cost-reducing provisions that would keep the public option premium low, like tying reimbursement rates to Medicare."
Jason,
I agree with your statement that this is an irony. Proves Lieberman's mendacity, dishonestly in front of the American public & hardcore lack of character to accept money from the corporate lobbies to deny to others what he & his family have enjoyed for yrs., govt. healthcare.”

Martha Stewart Calls Sarah Palin 'Boring And Dangerous' (VIDEO)

“Martha got it right, "confused" is the best term to describe Palin's views, esp. on the Middle East conflict regions. She would be terribly "dangerous" as Martha says in a position of power. Luckily, Palin's supporters will not be enough to carry an election, no matter how loyal, determined they might be.”

“In the USA the media moguls control the debate pushing it in one direction only, but cracks are occurring as we speak as evidenced by yesterday's interview between Palin & Walters. Even Charlie Rose is singing a new tune. What is making the moguls unhappy forcing even longtime Israeli adherents like Walters & Charlie Rose to ameliorate their pro-Israeli tone, is that the American public has easy access to alternative narratives, online & via the international satellite channels. The old argumentation, demonizing one party only & exonerating the actions of the other no longer is convincing. Leon Uris & his fans are dead or dying fast.”

“Yes, I caught the part of the interview when Barbara Walters asked Palin about whether Israeli settlements should be built. Of course, she gave the standard evangelical response. I was astonished when Walters long an advocate of Israel, then asked Palin a followup question about are you sure you agree to building the settlements "even" in the Palestinian territories. It looks as if even in the bastion of the American MSM, there is a growing discomfort with the actions of the Israeli govt. I also think the more Palin advocates for Israeli occupation & settlement, while this view may find a favorable response in some evangelical & Zionist sectors, the rest of the American public (who does not to associate themselves with Palin) will be inclined to look more critically at the actions of the Israeli govt. The big lobbies, vested interests do not really have an ally in Sarah Palin.”

“"Dismayed" is hardly a strong enough term to describe one's reactions to the new moves of the Israeli govt. to evict yet more Palestinian families from their homes, to build yet more settlements in disputed areas. The Obama team has to come up with better terminology. "Unprecedented" didn't cut it either, nor did Susan Rice's "anti-Israel vitriol" as it seems much of the world finds the actions of the Israelis not nearly as tolerable as our leaders, both in the US Congress & the Obama adm.”

It will be interesting if the Obama people can work up any real indignation other than being dismayed at yet more evictions, settlements, bypass infrastructure, unequal access to electrification, water, education & the like. The civil rights of all who live there need to be respected as one religious group should not be any different in terms of property rights or other benefits than those of any other or no religion.”

“In Washington, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly withheld support for the Palestinian initiative. "We support the creation of a Palestinian state that is contiguous and viable," he said. Washington recognizes Palestinian frustration, "but we think that the best way to achieve that is through negotiations by the two parties," he said.
I wonder how Ian Kelly can even look the camera in the eye when he states such prevarication. Does he (or any of the Obama officials) really expect anyone, let alone the Palestinians, to continue to indulge the American leadership in this charade? Say one thing, but by all means, do everything in the opposite direction to disengage any real progress?”

“As someone else says on this thread, negotiations have done wonders. Going into the seventh decade. But, yes, appealing to the EU would be a novel idea. And which one of the European countries should give up territory to make room for that *Palestinian State*?? Many European countries already have contingents of 20-25% of Arabs inside their borders, just as Israel does. I have an inkling, though, that that percentage has not yet been reached in some Arab countries. Is it not the case that most Palestinians speak Arabic and are muslim? No Arab speaking countries in the EU that I know of, even though there are too many Arab speaking persons there already to some people's liking. Oh, Palestinians are NOT asking EU countries, or the U.S., to give up territory? They are asking Israel to do so? Well, may be in that case the Palestinians are barking up the wrong tree? Oh, there are no trees in the desert either? Well, whatEVER!! No, Alexa07, I do not know how Palestinians are looking into the camera's eye either and speaking such nonsense! Oh, you were speaking of the U.S.? Well, yes, how do they dare! The U.S. should immediately withdraw any aid to Palestinians. You are so correct, this time.”

And, BTW, what would be the international borders of this Palestinian "state"? HAMAS have already rejected the idea, and they control Gaza. So it's the West Bank only. However, Abbas controls only about 20% of it - a few major cities. Also, they are totally dependent on Israel for power and water supply, communal services, health, and security. So let's picture this: tomorrow the Abbas government declares independence. Who will provide the Palestinian population with basic services? No one. Because there's no doubt that Israel will rescind all prior agreements withe Autonomy, plus every terrorist attack will be lawfully considered as an act of war between states.
Words are a beautiful thing, but reality is something different.”

“Ben,

say that there is a fork in the road for the Israelis. They can either accept the sacrifices that lie ahead, either to accept the Palestinians as equals within the society that they really both share though neither group wants to admit it or to continue inflicting undue suffering on part of the population. The world tends to blame the group in power (whether fair or not) so if it is the latter, the Israelis themselves are in for a long haul & lots of disapproval from the world. Either way it is not going to be a free ride for them or the Palestinians. Both groups have such creative spirit, it is truly a tragedy that they can't figure out a way to live together & prosper. Unfortunately, if human history tells us anything, it is that they are not alone in their difficulties.”

To which leaders are you referring? There are too many people of all nationalities (including the Americans who bypass our pro-Israel media filters) who are viewing nightly on their international satellite TV channels the carnage of Gaza, Lebanon in '06, the settler rampages on the West Bank, the demolitions of family homes in Jerusalem presided over by the IDF, the arrogance & inhumanity of the right wing leadership. “If you have any respect for any nation that borders Israel except for Eygpt and Jordan, then you are just crazy. You talk about the bombing of Lebanon. Lebanon and Syria, and Libya are nothing but subsidiaries of Iran. They do nothing for their people, and promote nothing but death to Israel and all Western values. If you actually think that these nations are somehow victims of the big bad Israel then you are just out of your mind. We can disagree rationally about the Palestinian conflict, but if you truly see Israels neighbors (other than Eygpt and Jordan) as ANYTHING but evil promoters of terror and hate, then you have shown your true colors and your argument loses all force, because you are no longer rational, just a Israel hater.”

“You are correct of the current Israeli government who is the MOST conservative they have had in probably 30 years. However, how short your memory. 2000 Camp David Summit, Israeli PM Ehud Barak offered PLO Preseident Arafat 95% of the West Bank, and all of the Gaza Strip, which was all they were asking for minus that last 5%. Guess who turned it down? Hmm 95% concession from the Israeli's, 0 concession from the Palestinians. I know to us that seems like forever ago, but over there thats still recent. You spit on my generous offer and I'm not exactly going to be feeling very giving after that. That's the stage Israel is in right now. The youth that have grown up over the past decade saw their parents efforts and concessions GET NOWHERE, and they are angry. Now hopefully this will pass, but I see why they are frustrated. You offer your opponent 95% of what they want, when you have all the leverage, and still get turned down, you feel like saying screw it.”
