“Please stop drinking the Kool-Aid. A child born into poverty in France is statistically more likely to become financially independent than a child born into poverty in the US. This is because they don't coddle the hereditary aristocracy there the way they do here.
Mixed systems are more meritocratic. Meritocracy breeds productive, motivated people. The vast majority of people, contrary to your claim, are strongly intrinsically motivated.”

But if we are going with anecdotal evidence, I would say that child is more likely to remain in his 'spot' in society if he stayed in France. Germany, France, Denmark, et al still have the lowest common denominator system. We don't coddle anyone in the US, sink or swim. If you live in Germany and your dad is a mechanic chances are you will go to Realshule, do your apprenticeship and become a mechanic. Those old Euro systems are flat and don't afford the same kind of opportunity that the US does. That child, if he is driven would have a higher chance to succeed in the US. Ask any Indian or Chinese guy who grew up poor and who now earned his PhD where he wants to seek his fortune. Many of my friends from Europe and elsewhere came to the US for opportunities they could not enjoy in their home countries.
Jim Jones introduced the Kool Aid...a nice SF liberal.”

“alexis d is completely right.
jmpurser is right.
When the president is against honest, positive, change for the majority of Americans, our "good things" are not going to happen.
We thought we had a new and honest leader in Obama. We were wrong. He works for the corporations, especially banksters and all corporations tied with the military-i ntelligenc e-industri al complex. That's why Goldman Sachs is the big winner in all matters financial. That's why Obama is ramping up a wrongful war in Afghanistan, killing many many more innocent people than any kind of "terrorist s." That's why Goldman Sachs and cronies will win the environment "reform," which will be in the form of a windfall for the investment bankers who manipulate the commodities markets.
Yes, alexis, "we can be extremely effective. " Let's start by forcing the lying Repubs and Dems (nearly every one) to resign. Yes, they've broken their oath of office, they're working for the corporations, they're not representing us -- the MAJORITY on the health issue. So, they should be forced to resign.
That's change I can believe in. Not the current Chump Change.”

The ethical mindset of a centrist who believes humans must govern each other on secular grounds, regardless of our religious views, is in fact quite disciplined and rigorously considered.

“That's how some women are in the black community. There's a lot of generalized male hatred and most people of either gender have the emotional maturity of 5 yr olds. Respect for good black men who ARE doing the right thing is out of the question (until they get rich). Respect and love is seen as weakness unless you can gain it by force. Hence the guns and violence.”

And before you diss self defense--guns are used up to 2.5 million times a year defensively (and a gun is one of the few tools that enable the victim to effectively dissuade a far bigger and stronger attacker)”

“I'm sorry you had that experience. It must have been horrible, and congratulations on getting out.
However, there is a HUGE difference between crack and pot. I know many people who enjoy a little pot occasionally and responsibly. They hold good jobs, are engaged and intelligent citizens, and are completely harmless while under the influence of Cannabis. I wouldn't say they "need" it, and neither would they. But it's a harmless thing to enjoy once in awhile.”

“You are so right, Alexis. There are also people who use pot every day, not just occasionally, and you couldn't tell they were under the influence of anything. It's an internal quality, a state of mind that allows one to approach life in a more positve, creative, inspired manner. These are the mature users, not the those who are looking for a way to escape their troubles.”
