“Okay, when a company needs more money, what do they do? They get more customers. Adding a younger, paying, age group to Medicare will make it more solvent, not less.”

Caffeine Addiction -- As Real As Nicotine Addiction?

Caffeine Addiction -- As Real As Nicotine Addiction?

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 15:45:17 in Living

“I'm addicted to the rich flavor of a great dark roast. I'm addicted to the feel of the warm mug between my two hands. I'm sure my body is addicted to the caffeine, but my mind is addicted to the morning ritual.

I have a similar nighttime ritual, but it involves herbal tea.”

hp blogger Stanton Peele replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 07:52:44

“Among many things, the role of ritual in addiction belies the modern reductive search for addiction in MRIs of drugs' actions on specific areas of the brain. Many heroin addicts reject methadone - or antiseptically administered heroin - because it eliminates the ritual of self-injection. Many smokers find that oral nicotine simply doesn't cut it. Disulfiram (Antabuse) attacks the ritual of drinking per se rather than the effects of alcohol.”

The Hidden Dangers Of Pre-Menopausal Mammography

The Hidden Dangers Of Pre-Menopausal Mammography

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 15:32:57 in Living

“I'm 47 and I had my first mammogram in several years last week. Somehow, the recommendations against it prompted me to do it. That's just my weird psychology, I guess. I thought about the radiation, especially when the tech did a third one on my right breast.

I still haven't heard the results (on eggshells right now), but if they are okay, this will be the last one for at least a couple more years.”

Tamara Reding replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 23:30:51

“This whole issue of age and mammograms is very difficult for me. I am a person of science and I rely on research in my profession. I was however, diagnosed with two malignant lesions during my first mammogram ever - at the age of 43. I had no risk factors or family history. My lesions were next to the chest wall and would not have been felt by myself or a doctor. The lesions measured a 7 and 8 on growth speed which was an advantage in treatment but could have been very difficult to treat if not detected by the initial mammogram. I know what the studies have determined but it feels different when "I" am one of the ones who would have fallen out of the norm.”

Vickster replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 23:29:16

“I understand that, but most people don't live in regions that allow for a locally-grown vegan or vegetarian diet for a significant part of the year. Here in Michigan, there's always the risk of frost before Memorial Day and the growing season rarely lasts much beyond Labor Day.”

“Really, is anyone advocating taking away your right to eat meat?

I am a vegetarian. I don't preach. My boyfriend eats meat and I don't mind at all. So many people assume I am trying to convert them and become instantly defensive around me. In fact, I've heard your argument countless times. My not eating meat is about me and my conscience. If someone asks me questions, I will answer them. If they want more details, I will direct them to literature. Other than that, I rarely even mention that I'm a vegetarian because a negative comment is almost inevitable.

IMO, there are far more preachy omnivores than vegetarians.”

Because Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and those morons keep getting reelected.”
