“I have a hard time believing the industry is dominated by straight men.”
miamorphos replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 18:32:06
“Right on. Sadly, I think it's straight and gay men and women who are all to blame here -- they're doing test-marketing and allowing that to overrule their morality. Most of them are in contact with gay men all the time, and few people in Hollywood are anti-gay. But the fear of seeming "out of touch" makes them behave shamefully.”

“So why do most of the gay roles go to straight actors?”
LouisLouis replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 18:26:16
“I think because it's considered a "meaty role" so to speak, for a straight actor to convincingly pull off being gay. Of course, many of them really are gay, but they get the props for playing it very well.
I would have loved to see Rupert more. He's a fantastic actor, gay or straight, he's simply talented and a sexy guy. I loved him in the mini series "Princess Daisy" and he's great in all those period pieces. Anyway............... he's totally right.”

“I've always thought it was funny that high school drama programs and Broadway are full of gay men yet 99.9% of Hollywood is straight? Right... They are actors. Let them play gay, straight or trees if they want. That's what acting is.”

“The problem I think is the cult of personality. It's not enough that we have good films with good actors. We, as a culture, have to obsess over actors as a celebrities, follow their personal lives like they belong to us. Most just give in letting themselves be celebrities. A few with solid integrity, like Jodie Foster, find a way to keep their private lives private. Of course we gave Jodie permission after a nut case used obsessing over her as an excuse to try and kill a president. Are we as a culture only willing to let good actors have real private lives only if someone stalks them and then commits a horrid crime? All the rest have to not just act for us but live their lives for us?
If we were only interested in good acting and didn't need to expose their private lives, then this all would be moot. Actors could be out in their private lives and the rest of us wouldn't know or care, anymore than we would about their religion, their lovers, their children, and their homes.
But we do have a culture that is into the cult of personality and an actor does need to seriously consider if being in the closet might be better for his or her career. Those of us who are GLBT or allies need to respect them, I think, if they chose to be discreet.”

“Here's a protest idea for all of us that live in states that have defeated gay marriage...avoid local sales tax as much as possible. If you live in NY, shop in CT or VT or even NJ (they haven't defeated it yet). Write to all your Legislators and to your newspapers informing them of the plan. You won't be breaking laws, but I can assure you that the lack of tax revenue will be felt.”
