“"average family" doesnt pay anywhere close to 20k a year in taxes. What are you smoking?”
donlee replied on Nov 26, 2009 at 21:10:54
“income tax + GST + PST + VAT
I said I would pay about $20,000 more in taxes!
If you make $70,000 then you get to keep maybe $40,000 of it but do you save it all? Every time I buy something I am paying extra taxes! Gas costs almost double! cigarettes costs almost 3 times as much or more all because of taxes.
Then, there is your wife.
If I lived in the US, I would have about $20,000/year extra to spend at the end of the year if I lived the exact same way. Even if it was only $10,000 extra, that would pay for my medical insurance.
The point I am making is that I wouldn't have to wait if I got really sick!
No one cares if you're slightly sick. Even if you had no medical insurance, you could deal with it.”

Land Mine Treaty Won't Be Signed By Obama Administration

Simple.
Of course, if you are a kid looking for a ball that is another matter.”

Troops In Afghanistan Outnumber Taliban 12-1

“wait, so there are supposedly 200,000 afghan security forces, and 25,000 taliban, yet they need our help to stop the taliban from taking over??? These numbers don't add up.”
AJH replied on Oct 28, 2009 at 13:17:42
“I'ld suspect the 25K taliban doesn't include the Pashtun or those otherwise engaged in a very long civil war. Truth is there probably isjn't a single afgan tribe or leader that will be able to consolidate the nation without another group opposing them and fighting for their tribe/people rights.
As for the need for more troops when you aren't lining up in a conventional battle the force claiming responsibility for the safety of the people. Us since Bush was stupid enough to overthrow the government and install karzai is forced to defend the broader population. Even if someone dies from a taliban we as the claimers of responsibility for those peoples safety take part of the blame and over time failing to stop it more and more of the blame. Especially when domestics are already hostile to foreigners as is.
A highly mobile guerilla force can simply float to find a weakness in the zone defense.
We'ld probably be better off pulling back and funding opposition to the taliban on a tribal regional level. But that carries alot of risks. Risk the taliban would consolidate in a safer afganistan increasing their force effectiveness against pakistan having a safe haven. and the political risk al quaida would launch a succesful US attack making a president look weak for having withdrawn job undone after promissing to defeat al quaida.”
