Movie vs. Reality:
The Real Story of the von Trapp Family”

“Thank you for posting the link. I read the entire article and it was very interesting. There are definitely some major discrepancies between the reality and the movie, but that is somewhat typical with any story made into a move. Overall I think it was done nicely. Maybe they portrayed Maria to always be so sweet and kind because they thought that bringing her character to life on the screen would make her look bad. Books have an edge when it comes to characterizations. Without "bubbles" over her head the audience might be thinking "what a nutcase!" And though Georg was portrayed as a bit cold and distant in the first half of the movie, I thought he still REEKED of charm. There was always a little upturn in the corner of his mouth. In the movie Maria said she fell in love with him the first time he "blew that silly little whistle". Well, that was the very first day she arrived, and that was when I fell in love with him too --- at the age of 5, and again every year when I watch it. So, essentially I think he was portrayed favorably and that they intended for his harshness to be transparent. And if the movie had been historically accurate, it may have been more like The Diary of Anne Frank which, although an excellent book/movie is depressing, and thus not aired every year and a favorite of so many.”

"While The Sound of Music was generally based on the first section of Maria's book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (published in 1949), there were many alterations and omissions.

Maria came to the von Trapp family in 1926 as a tutor for one of the children, Maria, who was recovering from scarlet fever, not as governess to all the children.

Maria and Georg married in 1927, 11 years before the family left Austria, not right before the Nazi takeover of Austria."

"The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom in Switzerland, carrying their suitcases and musical instruments. As daughter Maria said in a 2003 interview printed in Opera News, "We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing."”

“There is always room for variety in production. The Von Trapp family should be flattered that the Sound of Music has educational and entertainment value as much as historic significance, afterall...the real life original Von Trapp "cast" were entertainers themselves. all great stories are larger than the event and can stand up to multiple translations and renditions. The "production" will stand or fall on its own merits not on the egos of the family members.

Rather than pulling their support, they might well have added dimension to the production by adding historic comment as opposed to self service to their dramatics. I have to admit that I also felt this was a light weight approach to the original movie cast which are now immortalized, but the music is larger than the historic dangers themselves even in the grand movie for much of our living audience.

Perhaps the Von Trapp family should "get together" and coordinate an historic production of their own? Surely Spielberg would be interested in doing a first rate fiction based on their story. Or perhaps they could really get serious and sponsor a 'true to history' production and show us all how its done. I wonder if they might add some storyline to those that did not escape that is a bit more true to life and less vanilla flavored?”

This production was based on the original Broadway play, not the movie. It was first staged on Broadway 1959-1963 and has enjoyed tens of thousands of international productions ever since. What was shown on TV was a exact re-staging of the original play.”

Chomsky's work is notoriously under-referenced and he treats his opinion as truth which unfortunately makes sources scarce. In this case his opinion was that he didn't agree, so therefore it was all wrong.”

“[quoted excerpt]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan
"...post-meal drowsiness may have more to do with what else is consumed along with the turkey and, in particular, carbohydrates. It has been demonstrated in both animal models and humans that ingestion of a meal rich in carbohydrates triggers release of insulin. Insulin in turn stimulates the uptake of large neutral branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), but not tryptophan (an aromatic amino acid) into muscle, increasing the ratio of tryptophan to BCAA in the blood stream. The resulting increased ratio of tryptophan to BCAA in the blood reduces competition at the large neutral amino acid transporter (which transports both BCAA and aromatic amino acids), resulting in the uptake of tryptophan across the blood–brain barrier into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Once in the CSF, tryptophan is converted into serotonin in the raphe nuclei by the normal enzymatic pathway. The resultant serotonin is further metabolised into melatonin by the pineal gland.Hence, this data suggests that "feast-induced drowsiness"— or postprandial somnolence — may be the result of a heavy meal rich in carbohydrates, which, via an indirect mechanism, increases the production of sleep-promoting melatonin in the brain.”

“Tryptophan is a precursor to seratonin; correct. But seratonin in the body does not transport through the blood brain barrier readily and acts distinctively in the rest of the body in a range of various ways...but no matter what the levels in the blood it can not get into the brain. For some reasons I can't recall that, I believe, interacting with insulin levels in the bloodstream, tryptophan manages to increase seratonin in the brain. That is, what I understand, is the reason that tryptophan may influence sleep, hence turkey does potentially induce sleepy mood.”

“Assad is not worth defending but many of the statements are hyped and tailored for affect. Ultimately Assad is not in the interest of the US military-industrial complex and he runs a secular state that had some long range promise towards a middle east version of democracy. The "politics" of the region is geopolitical and it is not because he dictates (so do the Saudis and much more so...) but because geopolitical forces are against his stance in the region. The one complexity that I can't stomach is that we are supporting Al Qaeda to infiltrate under a rebel flag, and our own Washington based intelligence community is already anticipating another round of blowback from that scenario (quote) " "The civil war in Syria may provide Al-Qaeda with an opportunity to regroup, train and plan operations,” concluded former Rep. “Aside from the fact that this article is an opinion, hence the name "opinionator", it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of demonizing a student loan lender for making a profit. Schools can only award students up to their budgets, regardless of how much a lender approves a student for. Most schools have debt management counseling. The Entrance Interview that every student must sign and take a quiz on specifically advises to borrow only what you need.

If student debt is crushing the American Dream, maybe we should start raising children who have a realistic outlook on life and borrow responsibly, instead of a bunch of kids who don't know how to handle reality if it's not on facebook, taking out $70k to get a degree in art because that is what moves their soul, even when they are not talented.

Throwing money at a problem does not solve it. Pell Grant recipients have a 6 year graduation rate of 40%. 40%!!! That is deplorable. Kids are not prepared for life. They are prepared via social media, thinking they are movie stars who deserve acclaim just for existing. And then you suddenly expect them to be responsible at the age of 18, as if some kind of wizard will fly by and *poof!* inexperienced, sheltered child now becomes responsible adult. Poor responsible adult taken advantage of by big bad student lenders.

Never sign something unless you know the terms. Simple, effective, and all too often missed.”

Problem Solved!

The real problem is that we are all in a raging bull session to sell out our constitutional rights to privacy...the NON-FELONS that would be harassed by universal background checks and stored information that follows that...(don't kid yourself into thinking there will not be repercussions to such data mining...you have to be stupid to believe that!)...and yet there is no political courage to demand a MANDATE on the actual production line and distribution restraints from the manufacturers and benefactors of these "anti-domestic" war weapons of destruction being created for the mass market (and foreign gun running sales) in the first place.
