It was a violation of the rules, a blatant one, and will probably come to define Henry's career.”

“Clemson's C.J. Spiller has to be the most exciting player in college football right now. He has been doing some insane things on the football field to get his team into the ACC Championship Game. I can't vote for the Heisman, but he'd be at the top of my ballot if I could.”

Michelle Wie v. Golf

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 21:54:58 in Sports

“The LPGA has been stuck for the past few years with a commissioner (Carolyn Bivens) who did not put much consideration into marketing women's golf to American audiences. Michael Whan, who takes over in that position in January, comes from a marketing background; with young American players like Wie, Creamer, Pressel, Natalie Gulbis, and Brittany Lincicome becoming fixtures on LPGA leaderboards, he should fare better in his role than his predecessor.”

“NY-23: Despite Scozzafava's suspension of her campaign, Hoffman fails to capture her supporters. Owens wins with a plurality (41-39) over the Conservative candidate.

VA Gov: McDonnell wins by eight points (52-44) over Deeds.

NJ Gov: Christie performs below expectations at the precincts, and Corzine (44-41) retains the governorship.”

I'll take Hoffman and McDonnell and give you 8 points.”

“If we had a more diverse, European-style party system in this country, we could recognize the tea-partygoers as the far-right loonies they are, and relegate them to the fringes where they belong. Instead, we have to pretend to take them seriously because 35-40% of voters will let them off the hook for simply being Republican.”

UpstateNY replied on Oct 16, 2009 at 09:53:21

“I think people have recognized them as loonies, the Republicans thought they needed them and instead of rebuilding their party with seasoned, reasonable and intelligent people, they took the easy way and encouraged the loonies. After all, they were able to marshal people to come to rallies and boo loudly.

It really started with the pick of Sarah Palin to be VP.”

“The United States has never seen a major political party marginalize itself into oblivion. The Federalists' disappeared because Alexander Hamilton meant so much to them—both figurehead and spiritual and intellectual leader—he left too big of a void after his sudden death for the party to replace. The Whigs allowed their differences on slavery to tear them apart from within. Right now, though, the Republicans are running the risk of dying because they are too incompetent to realize the need to moderate their views and build a working coalition to form a majority.

Let's be honest: the only people openly associating themselves as Republicans are the hard-right reactionaries who truly believed the Rovian boasts of a permanent Republican majority, even though that goes against the principles of democracy. They are unable to tolerate any viewpoints contrary to their own, and their plan to return to power is to wait for Obama and the Democrats to fail so badly (a certainty to them, since they are unable to cope with any other conclusion) that Americans will have no choice but to vote for them. But that's not how electoral politics work; even in hard times, voters will not vote the governing party out if they see no viable alternative. The GOP is not offering a viable alternative right now. Eventually, they will have to realize their ways, or the people too tired of losing will go somewhere else.”

“"But he also said he wouldn't support any cuts in defense, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid -- which, along with debt payments, would put more than two-thirds of the budget off limits."

And herein lies the Achilles' heel of small-government conservatism. People like having a standing military and the makings of a social safety net, but they don't want to pay for them; hence, rising deficits.”

“It's custom in many Slavic countries to include a diminutive suffix to the end of a woman's last name. In Russia, the suffix -a is added, hence Safin becomes Safina and Sharapov becomes Sharapova; a Russian last name ending in -sky turns into -skaya. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the suffix -a replaces the masculine -y in surnames of such a structure, while the suffix -ova is added to the end of most other names.”

“If these same people try the same kinds of protests on July 4, I doubt even Fox News will be all that sympathetic to them. A presumably anti-tax revolt on Tax Day that also brings out the crazies is one thing, but the crazies coming out without the libertarians there to blend in with on our national holiday sends out a completely negative message.”
