Susan Collins Will Vote To Expand Background Checks: NBC Report (UPDATE)

Commented Apr 14, 2013 at 01:09:17 in Politics

“Collins has always been a RINO. Big supporter of Obamacare and not a conservative thought crosses between her ears. Much like Olympia Snowe. The GOP needs to distance itself from these party-line Democrats like Collins and get some conservative elements back within the party. Collins isn't a hero, she's been deceiving the voters of Maine for years.”

Ben Hoffman on Apr 14, 2013 at 01:23:58

“They're the last of the sane Republicans.”

“Apparently RINO = Anyone from the right who dares to have an independent thought. When one puppet cuts a string, the other puppets get so upset.”

Raw Ron on Apr 14, 2013 at 01:14:45

“Your clueless. She comes from the blue state of Maine, right next to Connecticut, voting against this would mean certain defeat. This is an issue that everyone with two brain cells can agree with. As a partisan it tickles me pink when extremist republicans purge their party of rational people. Think for half a second.”

“Uh...if you check, the Federal Gov't has spent more money this year than last year. There aren't any "cuts" it's simply slowing the growth rate of government. They're trying to scare taxpayers because if we cut spending and nothing really happens, the jig could be up for the statists.”

'Cutting inefficient spending is good." That's brilliant! Who gets to determine what inefficient spending is?

crimghost on Dec 17, 2012 at 10:18:56

“That solution is as simplistic as taking all guns away from everyone. I don't believe the problem can be so easily solved as taking away freedom from people who are diagnosed with a mental illness. That would stigmatize mental healthcare to a point where people would never seek help for themselves.”

“That is an easy question to answer, we don't want to pay more in taxes to fund Medicaid and state programs to do so. For those that have private insurance, the companies don't want to pay, just put them on meds and get them out the door. No follow up to know if they continue with meds or decompensate and become a danger to themselves or others.”

hsmith7250 on Dec 17, 2012 at 01:38:54

“The libs have spent the last 50+ years emptying the sanitariums - too cruel. Unsupervised, not taking their medication, filthy, sleeping on steam grates on the strreet is much more humane. Seriously - deinstitutionalization started under Kennedy as a response to perceived unpleasant conditions in mental hospitals. Problem is that out of the mental hospital, no one is taking care of these people that by definition can not take care of themselves.”

“My mother was a psychiatric nurse for years, do you know how hard it is to get someone committed? Even when someone is put on a 72-hour hold they still have the right to refuse medication. They have to go to court for a commitment hearing before they can even force meds. Because of the mistreatment of the mentally ill in the past, there have been many reforms made. Yes, this is a good thing, however, it makes it extremely difficult to force treatment.

That being said, common sense dictates that if you have a child with those issues, you don't keep loading guns in the house!!!”

“I work in mental health. Maybe at one time there was such a thing as "stepping in and doing something" but it doesn't work now and hasn't for maybe 20 or 30 years. It's all about the money. Mental health services have seemed like low hanging fruit when govt looks around for a way to trim expenses and now it's down to literally nothing. When I worked on the civil side of a large mental hospital, we would get orders to discharge x number of people and we had to discharge the least dangerous of them. We couldn't say, no, none of them are ready to go because someone had to go. The general public has no idea how terrible the mental health system is right now. I work now on the forensic side, with people who have committed sometimes terrible crimes. The care and protection is much much better, but that's after the crime has been committed. I've said it before in comments yesterday and today, but there is no such thing as getting your kid committed because you think there might be something wrong. The criteria about being a danger to self or others doesn't mean hypothetically or possibly or some kind of percentage. It means you meet a long laundry list of difficult criteria. There's no evidence so far he met that standard.”

“You don't even know enough about the subject to ask an intelligent question.

A neighbor had a schizophrenic son who he took to doctors all the time; he hospitalized him whenever a doctor could be convinced he should be hospitalized, he called the doctor whenever the meds were having a negative effect or no effect and he was always told one of two things, double them, or halve them, but NEVER bring him to a hospital right now and get him admitted because that's not the way it works. He did everything in his power to help his son, and his son tried to kill him.

You truly, truly, truly have no idea what you are talking about.”

“There's an excellent point I haven't seen brought to the fore front; especially in light of the fact that congress has cut and is wanting to cut more of that mental health care to medicaid recipients. As it is, too many facilities are too quick to release mental patients out in society as soon as their insurance runs out... whether ready or not. Many of those are the homeless that we see in the streets every day; talking to themselves.”
