“A good bill with overwhelming public support? Which bill is this?
Over 57% of the electorate is now against the Senate bill. If you call that overwhelming support, then you need a dictionary ASAP.
A good bill? This bill does nothing to control costs, it only firmly entrenches for-profit HMOs into the system. We have had this promised land in MA. The exact same thing...ma ndates, state exchange, no denials for pre-existing, more uninsured covered (well, forced into paying for crappy plans), subsidies - the works. No public plan. The cheap plan that costs 15K/yr today (this plan will not cover basic diagnostic tests until you use up the 5K annual deductible, so the cost is actually over 20K with co-pays) is projected to cost 27K/yr by 2016. Progress indeed!”

“Who needs psychic training? Where is the difficulty in predicting that the Senate bill will become the final bill? Gibbs says it delivers over 95% of what Obama wanted out of HCR. The House bill is more progressive. So that bill will predictably be watered down to match the Senate bill. After all the only rebukes coming out of the WH are aimed at progressives.”

“How telling is this- that the Senate bill delivers over 95% of what Obama wanted?
That really ticks me off, considering his rhetoric during that campaign. The mandate (which HRC wanted & Obama said his healthcare bill would NOT contain) as just one example. This reflects very badly on Obama's (LACK of) character. His deal with PhRma *before the negotiations on this bill even began are another. KILL THIS BILL.
We shouldn't even ATTEMPT healthcare reform until most of the corruption has been cleared out of the legislature. We need to fix jobs & the economy FIRST, anyway.”

“David,
I wish I could share your optimism. We have heard that Obama is now going to "get personally involved in the process". Given that the WH has said that the Senate bill delivers over 95% of what Obama wanted, and their PR machine has been aimed only at the Progressives so far - you can safely bet that Obama will step in and twist the arms of these 60 progressives. Rahm will be sent to talk to each of them. And the Senate bill will become the final bill.”

“Medical loss ratios for medicare is 97% while it is about 70% for private for-profit HMOs. 30% of every health care dollar today goes towards HMO profits.
The Senate bill includes a limit of 80% medical loss ratio -but there is no enforcement provision. And the term is not defined, so many HMO "expenses" can be bundled as going towards health care as long as they are categorized properly. The smoke and mirrors game will continue.”

What is going to happen in the future that will ensure this bill becomes more progressive? If it is possible to improve it, why not do it now?
Gibbs just said on C-Span that the Senate bill accomplishes 95% of what Obama wanted. The atrocious Senate bill is what the WH wanted all along. And some try to convince us this will be built upon over time like SS and Medicare.
The Senate bill is TARP for the HMOs. It is payout for Obama's campaign donors.”

Most of us who have to buy it on our own can barely afford it today. The only reason is because there is no means to pay out of pocket. If you go that route, the Hospitals bill you at astronomical rates. The entire system is out of control. But the first step is make for-profit health insurance go the way of the dinosaur.”

“No, you are wrong Sen Kirk. Dr. Dean is right. The Senate bill firmly entrenches for-profit HMOs into the system. It has many loopholes on the regulatory elements like when policies can be rescinded. It allows the Secretary of Health to waive the Medical loss ratio requirements. Subsidies for those who cannot afford it puts taxpayers on the hook for those exhorbitant premiums HMOs can now legally charge. The bill is TARP for the HMOs. A bailout of the HMO industry being spun as real HCR.
The climate today is different from when SS and Medicare passed. Today Congress is bought by corporate interests. Do you seriously believe that once they have more money, courtesy of the mandates, that the HMO lobbyists are going to stand back and watch price controls kick in?
Yes, the perfect is the enemy of the good.
But the bad is the enemy of the good.
And the Senate bill is bad.”

What we are dealing with today is a blatant corporate buyout of Congress.
Yes, handing over more money to HMOs (which is what the Senate bill does) will allow for more reform to happen later! Why? Because HMO lobbyists will stand back and allow actual price controls to kick in? Please stop spinning this effort as serious legislation.”
