"Reality Stars": Sign Us Up Before We Kill Again

“I dunno...wh en my kids were about 4 or 5 yrs old, we'd move the TV in the closet when we weren't watching something we (adults) intended to watch with or without the kids. It was a huge thing on wheels. One day one of the kids attempted to wheel this thing out the closet and ended up upending it with fatal results for the TV. Circuit City wouldn't honor their warranty. Bless them. So we went without for about 5 years. When we did get a TV later, the kids never showed any interest. Computers had made their debut. So for my family, TV has been a very minimal thing. If anybody watches CNN or whatever it's usually embedded in Firedoglake or TalkingPointsMemo or Wonkette or Truthdig.. .oh, sometimes I browse HuffintonPost too.”

The Word Not Spoken: Bagram

“From part 3 of chapter 4 of 1984:
"Anything could be true. The so-called laws of Nature were nonsense. The law of gravity was nonsense. 'If I wished,' O'Brien had said, 'I could float off this floor like a soap bubble.' Winston worked it out. 'If he thinks he floats off the floor, and if I simultaneously think I see him do it, then the thing happens.' Suddenly, like a lump of submerged wreckage breaking the surface of water, the thought burst into his mind: 'It doesn't really happen. We imagine it. It is hallucinat ion.' He pushed the thought under instantly. The fallacy was obvious. It presupposed that somewhere or other, outside oneself, there was a 'real' world where 'real' things happened. But how could there be such a world? What knowledge have we of anything, save through our own minds? All happenings are in the mind. Whatever happens in all minds, truly happens.
"He had no difficulty in disposing of the fallacy, and he was in no danger of succumbing to it. He realized, nevertheless, that it ought never to have occurred to him. The mind should develop a blind spot whenever a dangerous thought presented itself. The process should be automatic, instinctive. Crimestop, they called it in Newspeak.”

“Colin Powell was given the option of curtaining Guernica tapestry at the UN, but George Bush voluntarily subjected himself to an oil on canvas by W.H.D. Koerner called "A Charge to Keep." There you have it: profiles in cowardice and courage. The prisoners would do well to keep their chins up and listen closely to that nuanced base line in "Reckless Life."
All snarking aside, I'm disgusted by Bagram and the cowardly avarice of the US military "detention" apparatus. Thanks to Mr. Shearer for calling it out.”

Al Qaida and the Taliban came some time after America was supporting the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan.
Both came about as the result of the abandonment by the West of Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet withdrawl.
It is al Qaida propaganda that they had anything but a minor role in driving the soviets from Afghanistan.
If you want the mot authoritative account read Ahmed Rashids TALIBAN. Published before 9/11/01/ He lays it all out very well. the creation of the Taliban and their links to bin Ladin.

“Good inquiry antispin but what I know is that:
President Reagan's administration, mainly through the CIA, used Pakistani Intelligence services to fund, arm, and train Afghan and foreign Islamist jihadis to defeat the Soviet army in Afghanistan.
Pakistan then used "channels built with U.S. money" to install in Afghanistan a friendly government -- the Taliban.
W. invaded the country and ousted the Taliban, installed the Pashtun, Hamid Karzai as president and returned many of the old Islamist jihadis to power in his government; thus the United States sponsored both sides.
The local Pashtun population is now fighting against the "foreign invaders" which is US along with the Taliban because they are fed up with the puppet Karzai, who has done nothing for the people.

“The Corps and the mindset of the Corps has ruined rivers all over the country. Inspired by Millie Johnson, I've been studying the mathematics of meandering rivers and the effects of channelization, and the conclusions are clear: straight rivers suck the life blood out of the land. Take a look at, say, http://wat erknowledg e.colostat e.edu/mean der.htm to get an idea of how meandering is important. Or, say, a standard engineering book like the people that work at the Corps should read to be qualified to work there: http://boo ks.google. com/books? id=48G-9FK Hu_YC&prin tsec=front cover
Or just google "meandering channelization" and you'll get some great links.
http://www .wyki.org/ Meander_(mathematics) is a little video that'll give you some idea of the mathematics (very basic calculator modeling)
So why aren't rivers managed properly? Let's see...try googling "greedy big business fast buck schmucks" to get some inkling of how to answer that.”

1 : characterized by such fineness of texture as to permit seeing through
2 : characterized by extreme delicacy of form : ethereal

Anyway, good ol' Mr. "Derek Smalls" Shearer hits the nail on the head once again; the only thing I'd add to it is, "Of COURSE Iran is headed towards acquiring nuclear weapons - just as much of the rest of the developing world is. That isn't the question. The question is, are they likely to obtain said nuclear weapons anytime soon? If last year's NIE is any indication, the answer is, 'No - not for another decade, at least."
I, personally, think it's perverse how ignorant most Americans are about what is universally agreed to be the single greatest threat to U.S. national security - ie: WMD terrorism. Every single citizen out to, at the very least, know that it takes months or even years of high-quality centrifuges running 24/7 to create weapons-grade uranium. Iran's centrifuges are neither high-quality, nor are they running 24/7, so it's going to take them at least a decade to develop nukes of their own.
And don't think that a sudden spike in centrifuge activity wouldn't be noticed by NATO spy satellites, either, by the way. This notion that Iran could suddenly obtain nuclear weapons within a week and completely undetected is the biggest farce we've seen yet from this Administration.”
