This is It: Michael Jackson's Transcendence

Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 14:07:08 in Entertainment

“Thank you for this post! Unlike you, I was a fan. ABC was the first record I bought at the local Murphy's Mart and my brothers supplied me with every album thereafter til I was grown!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jackson when I was ten years old, along with 3 of his brothers, his mother and Janet who at that time was seen on Different Strokes. My brothers and I were just 3 fans, hanging out at the Hilton Hotel, hoping wildly to meet our idol! We were singing a medley of Jackson 5 songs when his mother spotted us! Her and a shy Janet came over and we introduced ourselves and she led us up to Mr. Jackson's room. Janet said barely nothing and that was ok. She may have been a star by then but she was shy and I understood that! Mr. Jackson was rehearsing in the hotel room when his mother took us in. He was so gracious, listened to us sing his songs and watched us dance and we all got backstage passes to the show. As a ten year old, that was the highlight of my life:)

This is It, reminded me of that. Watching a genius, completely engaged in their art while at the same time, completely aware of all those around him. I was moved to elations of those of a child. I was thrilled, moved to tears and filled with joy all in one film.”

“My very flattering, very positive comment didn't get past the censors (???), so I'm not going to type anything more than well-written, well-said, well-done. R.I.P. to the G.O.A.T.”

“I read a book once that stated thest of a person's true character is best observed while the subject is under stress, b/c they don't have the time to think and will do what's natural to them. To witness my all-time favorite entertainer treat everyone around him with such grace, operate under such humility and to demand such perfection of himself and want to give the best to his fans displayed that the man was truly the greatest performer of all time and a generous, benevolent man to boot. God bless and godspeed, MJ, and thank you for a well-written review, Mr. Gyllenhaal: the fact that he converted you in the end is also a testament to his powerful talent as an artist and human being.”

Let someone who looked like that, with the EXACT same qualifications, personality, etc. get thrust into the national scene and see if they were so well received by the loons that love SP!! Women think she's pretty, men think she's hot and it doesn't matter that she would destroy the country to these people. Scary, Scary, Scary!!!”

“I like having doors held! Call me old-fashioned but I like it when a man acts like a gentleman! I live in small town American in Pa. and I don't see that men are more like women here just yet. Men here aren't prettying themselves up, dancing and singing nor are they usually the primary caregivers.

People here still adhere to the man goes to work and does all the outside work and repair, the ladies do all the domestic chores, etc.

But the thing is...I've noticed in my peers that the men STILL seem to want the ladies to do all the laundry, cooking, cleaning, child-rearing...but these ladies still have to work full time jobs.

What I've noticed around here in talking with co-workers, political groups, etc. is that the mentality is 'give me a housewife...that works'.

Maybe someday this area will catch up...I'll wait and see!”

“Thank you, Mika for your perspective! I hadn't realized that having kids and wanting to be married was 'taboo' these days til a 20-something co-worker was in my office and 'whispered' about how what she REALLY wanted was to settle down, start having kids plus have her career in marketing. Let's just say I'm older than she is and didn't realize that this was now frowned upon.

In this day and age, people shouldn't be shamed to live their lives...the way they want!!! Be single, live for your career, have it all...do what makes you happy and fulfilled! I also wanted it all-career, marriage, family...no particular order. It IS hard and sometimes I feel like that crazy chicken running without its head! That's ok, that's my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. To the stay-at-home moms...rock on! To the women who prefer not to have kids...do your thing!

That should be what feminism is...our choice!”

The Striking Obama Record

“I would bet NO ONE used dithering before DC. Americans should be happy they have a president who 'thinks' before jumping with both feet into disaster...like the last administration.

And Ruby dear, NO ONE, I mean NO ONE makes it to where he is by being naive. His daddy wasn't a big player, no wealth, no ties to Washington or big business and yet he made it to the presidency and you call him naive? Are you being willfully ignorant or what?

"Thank you Jacob. that is what a lot of folks out here feel.

The Sad, Shocking Truth About How Women Are Feeling

Commented Sep 18, 2009 at 08:18:33 in Living

“I find joy in things like the smiles and giggles of my children or the tenderness of my dog's head on my lap. I find joy in the quirks and personalities of my family and friends and great peace in the beauty of nature each day.

The problem is...there is seldom time to enjoy such things. Like most women, I work full time, run my kids to all of their practices and sit my butt on a bleacher cheering them on! I have to do all the laundry, the grocery shopping, pay the bills, run the errands, tend the injuries, take dogs to the vets, etc. etc.

There never seems to be a break and to top it off, I struggle with Lupus, Fibromyalsia and RA. Still...I enjoy life most of the time but there are times I feel like I can't do another thing and the stress of that is what kills the joy I normally find.

There was a poster that said women are deprived of sleep. Some of us are...we are deprived relaxation and caught up in the race to survive and provide. It is stressful and we all know what stress does to our well being.”

saladd replied on Sep 18, 2009 at 09:38:53

“I think that's part of the problem and why women are so unhappy--we've got ourselves (and our children) so overextended and overwhelmed with things to do. I have learned to say no to a lot of things I used to try and cram into my life that I really didn't want to do. I needed to create breathing room and it took a major health challenge for me to realize that's what I needed. I learned the metaphor for what my illness meant to me and I changed my lifestyle and made more time for myself and my family. If you have lupus, fibromyalgia and RA you might want to stop and listen to what your body is trying to tell you.

We teach our children that they constantly have to be doing something, staying busy, accomplishing, succeeding, instead of allowing them and us to just BE: To enjoy nature, to enjoy daydreaming, taking walks, reading, exploring and just following our inner voice. Most people's lives have become so noisy so they can't even hear their own inner voice. I'm tuning into mine more and more and happy to see my daughter deciding what things she wants to do vs. feeling like she has to do things because it's good for her, to keep up with others, or to please her parents. Read The Not So Big Life and de-stress.”

Despite what is actual heritate is, he is viewed as a black man. I am also multi-racial and no one, I mean NO ONE has ever referred to me as a 'multi-racial' woman. Just because there are athletes of color, don't be fooled. People even love those stars or athletes and many will turn right around call a local black person the n-word.

I've seen it time and time again. There's no money to be made here. We weren't making any money when people sprayed racial slurs on our campaign office for Obama. I didn't make a dime when I got threatened for wearing a sweatshirt with his face on it.

Your argument is shoddy. A prejudiced person or racist person does not CARE if a person is half-white. All that matters is that they are half-black and THAT is the basis of their hate!”

They wish it would just go away instead of being the blight that it is on American History!Where do we begin with Bush? The fact that he should have never been president the first go round is good. The fact that his administration took this country down the toilet faster than any other administration in history? Were you proud that Bush & Co took us into these wars, bankrupted the country, spied on American citizens, expanded government, helped the rich get richer??

Respect for Obama? Well, getting to where he is on his own bootstraps for starters. I thought real conservatives respected that?! “Dazy, you're talkin' like a pure-dee Eric fan. No problem there as I love Eric from the books but the show is quite a bit different. Of COURSE, Bill wants Sookie to be his for REAL for the reasons you mentioned. He is guilty over the secret he shares with the queen about her yet he loves her to death (no pun intended)! He also knows Eric wants her. Eric may not love her but he wants her and that's a major threat.

I think Season 3 will get juicier between Eric/Sookie and Bill. Besides, you say Sookie 'likes' Eric? Not yet she doesn't. She has sexual feelings about him but dislikes his personality very much.

It's important not to confuse True Blood with the books. Sookie so far is turned on by Eric due to the blood exchange but he shouldn't be playing into whether she wants to marry Bill or not. The reasons she stated were pretty good ones except I thought the lack of children would be brought up.”

My daughter...well, she's athletic:) We have Rock Band 2...you know why we play? Because it's a lot of fun to have that family time, doing something fun when we're snowed in. We haven't played it during nice weather but when winter comes, I'm sure we'll bust it out for an evening of silliness and play. I remember doing the same when I was little. They had those microphones that gave a real microphone sound and I'd sing along to my favorite records. People like to play and playing with music has been something that's gone for generations. It's 'pretending' at least for us. We act out our band characters and when since when is that not a part of playtime?”

Stop Panicking About Obama

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 16:03:37 in Politics

“This is almost bizarre reading all of these comments. Where to begin? I guess you haven't been paying attention that our troops being brought back from Iraq is being worked on right now? They may be out sooner than President Obama and his team had thought. I was a campaign worker and he had always talked about our fight really being in Afghanistan so I don't know why you're surprised that that has become the focus.

Why are you so upset that Cash for Clunkers was a boost? So, you say nothing is happening with Gitmo is that why several sites including Europe are being scouted to house those prisoners?

The majority of Americans is FOR healthcare reform and it's unfortunate that the MSM has chosen to focus on those who are making fools of themselves.

There was actually a poster asking 'why the smart people are being ignorant'. If you find liberals so smart maybe you should take our lead instead of believing our President is a 'naz i', 'a socialist', an alien, etc. etc.

Also, we must be diligent but patient. Everything was in a shambles and you think it's going to be fixed this soon? There's been a lot of mistakes but things are being worked on. Don't jump ship and give up so quickly!”

“Americans were mostly reared watching tv, and have little patience for any solution that takes longer than half an hour to roll out. That's what's at the root of the reality-free impatience we see in the media: "But what have you got for us THIS news cycle, eh?"

When something smelly starts bubbling up in your yard, like it did under Dubya, you have to take the time, and do the digging, to unearth the root of the mess, before the (also messy) fixing part starts.

Right now, we're still digging. And that guy in the hole with the shovel, and the mud flying? That's our President, bless him.

“1) You take it as unquestioned that our war on Afghanistan is a good thing because it's not Iraq. In fact, it's another irresolvable quagmire, with no way to win because there's no clearly (or even unclearly) defined goal.

2) You write as if passing any health care bill is "reform," but what Congress is cooking up is more corporate welfare, designed to safeguard insurance and pharmaceutical industry profits. Obama's stance on what he wants in a health care bill--excuse me, health insurance bill; we're no longer pretending that government is concerned with health CARE--changes every week.

3) You say, "don't give up so quickly," but what concerns many progressives is NOT that Obama hasn't had time to make changes, but that he's reversed many of his campaign positions. He promised to repeal the homophobic "Defense of Marriage Act" and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy; since he took office, his administration filed a brief SUPPORTING DOMA and placed DADT on the back burner--apparently indefinitely. He promised to end torture and extraordinary renditions, but he's continuing those illegal policies. He promised to end federal raids on medical marijuana dispensaries, but those raids have resumed. He bailed out the banks without a single credible string attached; they're recovering, and their customers aren't.

Don't tell me I have no right to be angry. The idea that we must all trust in our great leader to do what is right for us is antithetical to the very concept of a democracy.”

What pinheads like Quityerbitchin don't obviously understand that with illnesses like Lupus, a person's health can be a roll of the dice. Feeling decent one day and a complication the next. Before I graduated college, my husband and I made too little for to pay for insurance outright and the cost for him to have his family on his insurance was too much. We made too much for the Chip program. He only insured the children and me as I was having bizarre health issues (the Lupus). I can understand your son-in-law's reasons for insuring himself, but sometimes we have to sacrifice. My kids would be covered before myself any day. When I couldn't afford dental for all of us at my former company, I covered my kids only. *I* almost died from an abcess tooth by not going to the doctor. I even knew a couple that legally split so the mother could get the Chip program for her kids. I don't know the solutions for your family but your daughter and grand-son shouldn't be uninsured with their health problems. Since we don't know the full story, suggesting part time jobs is just snide and nothing more. People like Quityerbitchin probably fall apart over a cold and would never be able to handle a condition like Lupus so don't fret over them. Best of luck!”

We live in a rural area but to see the support was so helpful! This is a Republican town, and of course there's racism but that canceled out some of the sadness of this article. Our field organizer said we'll never win people that are prejudiced and would flock to an unknown, scandal ridden woman. But we must energize those that can see the truth. The many Dems and Independents and even some Republicans that know better!

I believe O shall prevail!”

“I've been campaigning and I can tell you that so far in Northwestern Pa., this hasn't gone over too well. Even the more un-informed see this as a pander. I spoke to about 502 people today and most of them don't have a clue who she is and those that do literally laughed at the desperation.

Anyone who would justify this pick has an agenda or their oxygen must have been cut off at birth!”
