“I come from a background in Marine Corps Aviation.... John McCain crashed 4 planes and was involved in the complete destruction of 3 more while he was a pilot in the Navy. Anyone who was NOT the son and grandson of 4 star Admirals would have been grounded after the first of his mishaps. Actually any normal Midshipmen who graduated fifth from the bottom of his class would never have even been selected for flight school in the first place.

Where did you get the idea that he ever had good sense for his ambition to get the better of?”

“I worked with him, or rather his staff, on an important environmental issue. And he was excellent.

But that was before he got the Presidential bug.

he had a very good environmental record. For a Republican.

Heck, even a Democrat for that matter.

Also had an excellent record opposing pork barrel spending.”

“OK, since you obviously don't like special interst money from the left, and I don't like special interest money from the right we've found one thing in commmon. We don't like special interest money. Let's fight to get rid of ALL special interest money PERIOD. REAL campaign finance reform - in the form of 100% publicly funded elections. Then, there will be no need to argue about astroturf or grassroots. Voters will be able to make informed decisions based on the facts, the issues and the candidates without corporate special intrest interference from the right or the left.”

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 12:09:04 in New York

“"Many votes went to Dede via absentee ballot before she dropped out "

She endorsed the Democratic candidate when she dropped out... if they chose her over Hoffman, why would they then choose him over her endorsement? At the very least they would have split those votes evenly... no change in the results. It was slim because it is a VERY conservative district. Hoffman had the backing of very well funded PAC's. The success that he did have was the result of MONEY thrown into the election, not Palin or Limbaugh.

Still, this election was not about National politics, it was a local referendum on the candidates invlolved and nothing more. The people there just didn't want Hoffman, he was a weak candidate with a lot of money backing him.”

“The angle of impact might not have been square... it could also have been on a very sharp downward angle which would indicate a bullet that was either fired into the air or ricochetted into the air. When it struck the house it probably had very little forward velocity remaining and the bulk of its velocity being the result of the force of gravity.

Good post...”

Commented Oct 30, 2009 at 14:57:35 in Media

“You are correct, firing shots at someones house is an intimidation tactic, but there is absolutely no evidnce that the shot was actually intended to hit the house.

If there was intent to intimidate him then it would have been fired from a close enough range to a.) penatrate the house and b.) ensure that they actually hit the house. Since the bullet didn't even have enough velocity to penetrate vinyl siding then it must have been fired from a VERY long distance away which means that the shooter would have VERY little chance of actually hitting what he or she was aiming at. By the time the bullet lost that much velocity it would not be travelling anywhere near it's original aiming point and the effects of wind and the loss of velocity would make it very inaccurate. This would be almost as difficult as trying to shoot straight up in the air and land the bullet in a glass of water.

My grandfather was a marksmanship instructor in WWII and he taught me to shoot when I was just a kid. The very first thing he taught me was to always know where the bullet will go if it MISSES your target.

It is far more likely that it was stray round fired from a mile or more away by an unsafe hunter that just happened to hit Dobbs' house.”

“How is the government forcing you to pay for it? You are complaining that people can't afford health care and then complain when we try to lower the costs by cutting out the outrageous corporate health care profits. “Agreed, which is why we need to offer people the ability to PURCHASE a public option, that does not include a 30% profit surcharge to pay millionaire CEOs outrageous salaries.

You can't help yourself if the insurance companies refuse to sell you insruance due to a preexisting condition.

You can't purchase insurance when the monthly cost is far more than the monthly income of a WORKING family that is living at or near the poverty line. Workers wages of been stagnant for the last decade while executive compensation has grown.

Do you also bieleve that primary education should be an individual responsibility? How about police and firefighters? Should we outsource those to provate contractors and force people to pay a membership dues for police and fire protectiion?

It is the government's job to level the playing field. Individuals do not have the resources to stand up to mega corporations worth billions of dollars.

This isn't all abot saving people who are already poor. There are very many hard working middle-class families who have been driven to bankruptcy by medical costs EVEN when they had insurance.”

Yes, Sen. Kyl, we are aware that you don't know much about anything. To save us all some time, why don't you quit telling us what you don't know (that'll take years) and instead take 10 or 15 seconds to give us the rundown on what you do know (we'll probably still have 5 seconds left over).

What's with all the obscure "I'm not sure that it's a fact" BS?
Why didn't you say that you KNOW that people don't die because they don't have health insurance? Can't you bring yourself to lie outright?

Oh, Now You Care

Commented Sep 28, 2009 at 13:21:50 in Politics

“You're missing the point. Illegal immigration is nothing but a SCAPEGOAT issue. If we could wave a magic wand and have all illegal immigrants and their children deported instantly our economy would still be a mess. Our unemployment rate would not even drop by 1% nationwide. The reason that compaines hire illegal immigrants is because they don't want to cover the cost of health care for American workers and pay a living wage. Corporate greed is the issue that needs to be attacked but whenever any politician tries to adrress this problem with regulation or health care reform then the corporate propgandists start throwing out the red meat buzzwords like "Socialism", "Obamacare", "Nazi", "Facist" or "Illegal Immigrants" and these tea baggers devour it like a pack of rabid dogs.”

huffposer replied on Sep 28, 2009 at 18:29:14

“I'm with you on corporate greed. Both parties cater to it and both parties are in the pockets of the companies who proudly display it. It truly is the cause of many of our problems.

But I disagree about the unemployment rate. I read today that the teenage unemployment rate is 50%. FIFTY PERCENT!! I went to McDonald's yesterday and everyone there could barely speak English. Where did teens work why I was young? At McDonald's and other places like that. They can't even get those jobs now. And look at the raids on companies that employ illegals. What happens when the illegals leave? The lines of people wanting those jobs stretch down the street and the pay goes up. Some jobs -- like picking fruit -- would most likely not be done by Americans. Illegals don't just take those jobs, though. They take factory jobs, construction jobs, and jobs in the service industries. 25 years ago, those jobs were done by Americans. Like you said, though, corporate greed drove companies to hire illegals at cut-rate wages in order to boost their bottom lines.

If a company can't stay in business without hiring illegals, it shouldn't be in business at all.

Illegal immigration is not a "scapegoat" issue. It's an issue of basic supply and demand. There are a lot more workers than there are jobs. And Americans should come first. We can't employ the whole world. We can't even keep our own people employed.”

“The problem is that Big Corporations hide behind the First Amendment as a means to buy politicians. Instead of raliing agasint big governement, let's go after big busniess. After all the word corporation does not appear anywhere in the Constitution. Corporations do not have any rights.
You even stated that Corporate Capitalism and the richest 1% run the government but then you blame the government. If government is weakened how will that reduce the power of the Coroporate Capitalists? In fact it will have the oppostie effect because even though so many public oficials are in the pockets of big business there are still those few who provide a check on corporate power. A weak government will just leave the corporations to lie cheat and steal as much as they can and leave the consumers with no protection at all!”

“Actually, "Compassionate Conservatism" is an oxymoron, "Values Voters" is redundant and inane.
Everyone is a "Values Voter" because they votes their own values, but those values are neither universally good or universally bad. "Values" are inherently neutral, they can be good or bad. Like the statement "this is a quality product". It means nothing, everything has quality, it might be high quality or poor quality.”

“I agree with your overall point but I think there is some correlation to educaiton. Though it may not be the case that the lack of education causes people to beahve that way, maybe people who are intolerant, and afraid don't tend to pursue higher education.

That fear and intolerance can also stem from a natural fear of the unknown. Travel, education and exposure to different cultures and people can be an enlightening experience.
I can definitely say that I learned to communicate better and became more empathetic as a result of some of the college courses I have taken. Particularly Interpersonal Communication (go figure :) and Cultural Anthroplogy.
I have also travelled extensively, worked in the Middle East for several years, and now work at the World Bank which exposes me to people from all over the world on a daily basis. These experiences are an education unto themselves even if they are not part of any formal education program.”
