“On to another point. Stop almost deifying this culture. They are, the amish, very human. They are no closer to God than is the average Christian and probably a lot less. When thought of from an integrity standpoint, they are, at least the majority, living in a delusional state of superficial adherence to a belief system which requires them to do so or leave. Most of them do not have the guts to leave a culture wherein they are coddled with the security of a communal insurance underpinning heretical beliefs to which their adherence virtually, if not absolutely, guarantees their continued participation. They shun to prevent any voluntary separation from their culture. This, the intentional and psychologically vicious practice of shunning, from the same people who are willing to 'forgive' the man who killed five defenseless little amish girls in a one-room school house in Nickel Mines, southern Lancaster County, Pa. It begs to question where all this 'forgiveness' is when its their own son or daughter who merely has a difference of opinion with the amish church and its doctrinal interpretation and expression of the Bible. I would bet that were their child to murder every one in their own family but the parents a virtual ocean of forgiveness would be headed their way the very next day...not so much with a child who wants to leave. But, then of course, that just doesn't get the 'press' that a good mass murder generates.”

“thought provoking and at the most, should evoke a criminal response from the appropriate authorities. The statute of limitations for legal recrimination has been increased to when a victim completes his/her 50th birthday year yet very few people know this. I certainly didn't or I would have had four brothers tried and jailed in a court of law even at this late date, having witnessed, in my own family when I was merely nine years old, the raping of a sister by four older brothers.”

“The previous and this post was meant, in the main, to be a reply to 'Europian" who purported to have absolute knowledge that these cast members were mere "actors" and not the real McCoy, as it were. While not a one of them was amish or Mennonite at the onset of the show, all were either amish or Mennonite with first-hand and very authentic knowledge as to the peccadilly's within their respective cultures. One of them is related to me although I've yet to figure out exactly how. Apropo of nothing except to verify my own connection to the culture, 4 of the little amish girls killed at the Nickel Mine slaughter were related to me; at least one was a first cousins child. Also, if sexual abuse provides any connotation of an "axe to grind" then I most certainly am guilty. Before I even reached 16 years old I had spoken to no less than 32 members of amish family's located throughout one H.S's district parameters. In the second most statistically significant result I've ever seen or read, however anecdotal it may be, 100% of the children with whom I spoke either knew of a nuclear family member or were themselves sexually abused - all with pre-pubescent onset. Extrapolation of these results, again however anecdotal they may be is at the very least”

“I know MANY amish who one would be hard-pressed to detect an accent in any but a few words in all of their english-speak. My parents were ex-amish; all of my siblings were born into the culture and I have way tooooo many cousins to count. It is legal (I believe) to marry second cousins but, not first. Incest abounds; bestiality is, if not rampant, at least a hair shy of it. Shunning and the expression of it varies so greatly throughout that it must be regionally defined. One thing that I do think is it's highly unlikely (read that 'impossible') for any Ph.D out their who has never been amish to have more than a dusting of understanding as to what actually goes on in the amish. The amish kids in rumspringa 'all' have gobs of radio time, ipod time and to a lesser degree T.V. time. And if that is not enough to make you think and/or laugh, you haven't heard or seen real funny until you've heard an amish kid try on "rap" music as his personal musical style. I know of several amish kids within 3 miles of me who have, with implicit if not explicit, permission for their own little 'sinful' shed, room, barn area where their entertainment center is housed. For those of you who purport to know of how the amish live their lives, for the most part you are abysmally misinformed. Truth will out, eventually.”
