“I'm not sure if anyone has actually studied the breakdown, JanP, but your undocumented claim actually _reinforces_ my point. I'm simply saying that fear makes us quick to yield our constitutional rights, and decisions based on anger or vengeance are often ill-considered; Ms. Breitweiser's appeal to our higher instincts deserves attention because under the circumstances her ability to set those visceral emotions aside makes her remarkable.”

“I don't know whether you, like Ms. Breitweiser, actually lost your husband to the 9/11 murderers, but I suspect you did not. In any case, no one can lay a greater claim to "justice" than she, yet she's managed to resist yielding to the hatred and fear that the terrorists sought to sow in attacking the United States, and in doing so sets an example for us as Americans.
I hope you'll pay attention to her words: "Indeed, in the fight against Islamist extremism, we should never bow to the terrorists by compromising, manipulating, re-writing or flat-out ignoring the core, bedrock principles of our Constitution that speak to the very heart of who we are as a nation--a democracy. " And I urge you to heed her call to us to "trust our own judicial system to fully and openly prosecute the mass murderers of 9/11 while the rest of the world bears witness."”

“All other families of victims have the same credentials and most do not support trying KSM in New York or in the United States.”

“Do all the families of the victims of 9/11 also think these Jihadists have a right to be made legal aliens, and given American civil liberties? No, they don't.
Looking at these comments, the real purpose of these trials is to put Bush and Cheney, the CIA and otehrs on trial. if it means that a brutal mass murderer walks, it is a small price to pay to attack a former administration. Don;t forget that KSM sloley sawed off the ehad of Daniel Pearl.”

“Maybe you were just recently hatched from an egg, but the rest of us Americans have as much of a claim to "justice" as Ms. Breitweiser. My family has fought and died in the service of this country and it is far from being only Republicans who are dead set against these trials taking place in NYC.
I do not have faith in our justice system as it has been hijacked by the likes of the late Johnny Cochran and other blood sucking lawyers. If OJ can be aquitted, I have no hope that we will receive justice from our justice system.
More than anything I wish W would have been able to dispose of these animals quickly and quietly.”

I suppose you go on such shows for the wider exposure they give you, Mr. Blumenthal. You don't need to waste time recapping the gory details for those of us who would never watch anyway. And I say this as a die-hard fan of your work, including the work that certain sites won't cover because it offends The Powers That Be.”

Decision Day For Democrats: Poll Shows Path to Healthcare Reform
Commented Oct 07, 2009 at 02:24:14 in Politics
“The biggest issue in most medical malpractice suits--and personal injury suits generally--is FUTURE MEDICAL COSTS. Universal health care ( I would argue single payer is the only logical cost-effective mechanism for providing that) solves that problem. That ought to help keep our auto and homeowner insurance costs better contained, too, and have a huge impact on state workers comp systems as well.”

BTW, yes I have lived in some of those other countries with single payer health care. They can have it. The best solution is what we have in the US today.”

“YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT Oh that is BULL. They are the same people . They are major polluters. They went into the HMO business after the Black Lung Legislation, coal workers' pneumoconiosis, in the seventies which addresses pollution, a workman's comp issue killing miners and leaving widow and orphans all over the Midwest and north eastern states..
How can you say that major polluters that come from the same people and hide the fact that THEY operate under different name in the medical division alone are not associated. Because they want you to think they are different. They are all together believe me in the same towns in fact. They can't help but be associated. They are birthed from the same source. Medical insurance companies cannot be major polluters and hold the documentation of people with cancer in their hands when they operate in the same town. That is why they are obscuring the whole thing under different names and holdings. It's a freaking whole Family for Christ's sake.”

“I don't know what the hell they are doing. They collect as much money and deny just a freely. They are trying to position for the co op idea. They are the same as other insurer. I know I had them. And when I got too sick to work and i found out that I had been working in Superfund site they refused to run tests on me. Not one over a two year period as I got sicker and sicker. The third year I had to quit work because I was basically dying. I was to learn over the course of time why they would not investigate toxic exposure when I had classic symptoms. My HMO was under a different Kaiser name in a town where kaiser pollutes and is on trial for decades for polluting. We don't need Kaiser to compute the comparisons and numbers, they are true for anybody that can add and find out the price of things and compare bills and percentages of increases. They're just adding numbers, anyone can add and they are pretending to be an answer to something when they are exactly the same as all the other companies. They don't want to lose control over being in charge of victims medical records and access to tests either. Go watch Erin Brockovich.”
Health-Care Reform: An Original And Simple Proposal
Commented Aug 14, 2009 at 04:59:05 in Politics
“It doesn't seem to have occurred to Dr. Toffel or any of the other proponents of tort reform that the basis of most malpractice (and other personal injury) claims is, quite simply, the need for future medical care. If we had universal health insurance, the source of an illness or injury (be it work, car accident, or iatrogenesis, e.g.) would be irrelevant. Even with the tort system a successful litigant could win future coverage for, say, a back injured in a car accident or through surgical error, but be otherwise uninsured and thus out of luck if s/he develops an unrelated condition like breast cancer.”

Mission Creep and the Southern Poverty Law Center's Misguided Focus

“Cockburn is a vituperative not-so-ex Stalinist, and I don't care for his style of argument. He's also an important contrarian who takes on the job of keeping the left honest (as I recall, he was the only left journo who tried to blow the whistle on the feds' fiascoes with the Branch Davidians and the Randy Weaver folks (wrong is wrong, no matter how objectionable the targets of the government may be).
Just because Cockburn criticizes the SPLC doesn't automatically make them faultless. ..the much older citation given elsewhere for the Harpers' piece should be a better source for you. It doesn't have the up-to-date figures on the SPLC's wealth, however. Dees is an iconic figure and like most icons is pretty much untouchable except by someone of Cockburn's combative bent.”

“"Like other similar groups, the Center has limited resources and needs to decide how to best use those resources. " Well, no, that's not true, at least as far as my definition of "limited": "As of October 2008 the net assets of the SPLC were $170,240,1 29." ( http://www .counterpu nch.org/co ckburn0515 2009.html ).
I'm not saying there was intimidation in the Philadelphia case, and you're certainly correct that there's not a prayer of even-handed defense of voting rights by conservative organizations, but if the SPLC makes a show of branding the NBPP a "hate group," it ought to make a determination of fact in this case.
The other criticisms of the SPLC Cockburn makes in the link above are eye-openers. It's not clear where principle ends and the "business" of the SPLC begins, nor is it clear if donor dollars to civil rights causes are best spent on the kind of "work" done by the EXTREMELY well-funded SCLC. Even if you don't agree with Cockburn, I'd venture to say that unlike when the SPLC was founded, it's relatively easy to monitor hate groups via the internet nowadays, and that could be done at MUCH smaller expense by a lean non-profit.
Having said this, I think Ms. Swain is blowing hot air, and I'm curious as to whether she supports the commendable work of the ACLU, which I value precisely because they challenge any violation of civil liberties.”

“I read Alexander Cockburn regularly in "The Nation." The kindest thing that I can say about him is that he is a major crackpot who, amongst other things, believes that global warming is a hoax and recycling is a waste time and resources. He is right on some things but wrong on many others. I would not consider Cockburn a reliable source on any subject beyond what he ate for breakfast this morning.”

If the shoe was on the other foot, if this was happening to your sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, when you have done everything responsible people are suppose to do, how would you feel? If that was your father in that house and an officer of color handled the situation the same way, how would you feel? Why must people of color be racist for expecting the same treatment in life that you take for granted?”
