Jobs Report: Unemployment Breaks 10%

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 21:11:14 in Business

“400000 service jobs have been lost to outsourcing since 2000. Over 2 million manufacturing jobs since 1983. The balance that is needed in the American economy is gone. You can't have perfect employment but a fair number of people need to be employed to keep the economy running smooth. We are in deep trouble folks. American ingenuity is now in China or third world nations trying to keep them from becoming dictatorships. We have to manufacture and produce something or we will be truly a debtors nation.”

“Bad excuse for people not making it work. Don't point fingers...actually the 2 posts above make poor excuses. You both are listening to too many pundits and reading way too much stuff on the internet. Look after yourself and don't worry about other people not being able to work. Plan to fail or fail to plan. Take your pick.”

GE Moves Green Jobs To China

Commented Jul 26, 2009 at 19:43:44 in Business

“U.S. companies are still blinded by the over 1 billion population number provided by China. If they could just crack the consumer code they would have untold wealth and admiration from those all over the world. But they fail to realize is that China is poor. The products that a mature society like America buys it would take a Chinese worker 10 years to even think about buying. U.S. corporations after they are milked for the infrastructure and capital spend in China to build plants then they are stuck with goods that only can be bought in North America (Canada and U.S.A.) So basically they are using cheap labor to subsidize a false dream. The only company that does not hide this fact is Nike. They tell you cheap labor provides them a comfortable profit margin and we live with it. China will never open its economy to full competition for example (rice production and soft drinks). CEO's are fools to think they will be the ones to unlock the gate. Nor will it happen in India. They have a billion population society as well with more problems that American ingenuity could solve tomorrow but they want a countrymen to provide the solution not an outsider.”

“Retail sales in China have been going up by 30-40% per annum over the last several years. Auto sales have been up the same, particularly this year. Loan growth in the US is up over 200% just year, much of it on housing, so right now there should be demand for everything that goes in a house, like kitchen appliances and furniture. GM has been seeing very strong auto sales in China by the way, and some US auto parts makers manufacture parts for those cars. I believe the big problem regarding the economic relationship between the US and China is that the Chinese currency is so undervalued compared to the dollar, so Chinese folks don't have the buying power to buy American goods, only goods American manufacturers make for them in China with Chinese workers. The Chinese yuan simply needs to be revalued to create more balance in the global economy.”

Our Other National Shamelessness: Needless Job Layoffs

Our Other National Shamelessness: Needless Job Layoffs

Commented Jan 31, 2009 at 09:37:37 in Business

“As someone posted early. True profiency in a job requires years of practice, work,PRIDE and a willingness to be the best. All of those things explain the American worker. No other country besides Germany and Japan (Mercedes, BMW and Toyota) has as much pride and the American worker. Even the aforementioned countries has a lapse every now and then. Our Pride in Excellence is what made the american made product the most sought after goods in the world. Without the skilled labor that America provides we are surely never going to get out of the economic mess we are in now. We will have to see a rise in New American industry who does not outsource it jobs and takes stock in the talent and expertise we have. Even in Davos they are now telling the world that America will close ranks to survive and rightfully so because foreign national companies could care less about the American worker.”

“Rhetticent with such an eloquent quote. The question I ask is why wouldn't you vote for Barack Obama. If you admire the man and speak so highly of him what is holding you back. How much bigger does government needs to get than what it is right now. I don't understand? You are voting for someone who has done nothing but divide and promote hate not only at democrats but those that just don't agree.

I don't understand? I just don't understand? Is ideology that important to you that it would override your choice for the better man. To move past the hatred and vitriolic attacks you have to vote for the one that expresses your desire to remove it. When those that express divisive party rhetoric see that some still voted for that type of campaign it will never go away.”

“This was a political and financial payback from Europe. This was the trigger that will squash short-selling altogether. Also, we don't know if a big U.S. bank renege on a huge loan or line of credit so Porshe took the next best option which would be to buy up Volkswagen and at the end of the day be the most valued company in the world. Now the banks will have to scramble back to them hat in hand to reestablish whatever relationship remains. As well this is what happens when you have been telling foreign countries kiss off for 8 years, they will not help you when you really need it. What goes around comes around. Karma. We are receiving all of the bad will that the powers that be have been passing around for 8 years.”
Confusing North Carolina Ballot Leaves off Votes for President

Confusing North Carolina Ballot Leaves off Votes for President

Commented Oct 27, 2008 at 16:42:36 in Home

“I voted today in NC and the ballot was very simple and straight forward. As well in the voting center they had signs up everywhere telling you that a straight party vote will not process a vote for president so please vote for the president separately. Also, before I started a poll volunteer ask had I used the machines before and also once again that you have to vote for the president separately. So this is a non-issue. The president vote is the first thing on the ballot machine and then further down they ask if you want to vote straight ticket and on the ballot it tells you a straight party vote will not place a vote for president. As well there is a piece of paper that registers your vote for backup. Once you place you vote look in the lower left hand corner to see what the machine prints it should print whatever candidate you choose. No problems in North Carolina.”

“It may not be an issue in your polling place but that doesn't mean it isn't an issue in a different polling place. If there weren't all the signs and helpful people in the polling place, older people who sometimes get confused easily might just miss what they need to do.”

Global Obama: Big Opportunities, Bigger Challenges

Commented Oct 25, 2008 at 11:18:00 in Politics

“To get this country straight we need a global president. Who is like or perceived to be liked around the world. My father told me once "Your reputation will go farther than you" this holds so true in this election. Barack is talking of bringing America back to fore front of leadership and example of shining democracy and all its spoils. Not the arrogant, my way or the highway diplomacy that has dominated for the last 8 years.First thing first;Get rid of the Axis of Evil list (so sophomoric) it did nothing but alienate and isolate. Barack was global peace or at least an open dialogue of ideas. Getting jobs to come back and encourage investment requires diplomatic understanding. Every nation would like some foothold here whether it be industrial because we are still the worls's largest economy or political we still have the most advanced military and clout. So a global president indeed is he Barack Hussein Obama. Proud of the name, Proud of the man even more”

His age and slipping mind is letting all the secrets out. You know what happens to those that can't keep secrets. John McCain has been involved in South American power plays for years. He got involved in the Iran/Contra/Savings and loan scandal. WHO IS JOHN MCCAIN?????”

“I use to work for a major credit card company and could see from the hundreds of phone calls per day I took who was donating to Barack Obama. I know for a fact that these donations are coming from backwoods of Miss. to the high tech world of Silicon Valley. From the means streets of New York to the southern comfort of Texas. Everyone knows that he is the type of president that our grandparents or parents talked about with JFK or Teddy Roosevelt not policy wise but the charismatic, history making presidents. The ones who they wax poetically about now. Our past presidents left a mark with people. People believed in our presidents back then. Obama is a throwback to those times with a 21st century attitude.”

RButler replied on Oct 23, 2008 at 20:22:04

“People who probably had no savings whatsoever were charging donations to Obama???? Somehow, that seems to be illustrative of our economic problems. Obama should have been a televangelist. Isn't that how they make money promising 'hope'?”

“Also from my comment early. The $70-$80 billion that is in surplus in Iraq we should present to the world court we should procure some if not all of that money which by Jan 1. should over $100 billion dollars. That will be to pay back America some of the money we have wasted on this country. We will never get any oil out of them anyway. Second, eliminating outsourcing tax and bring jobs back to American soil will give the economy a big boost as well. More corporate taxes and Americans with jobs. I worked in the credit card industry and most credit card call centers are in India or Puerto Rico (sorry Puerto Rico but times are hard). Even at the call center in NC we had to use interpreters to talk with our customers and internally. Most computer call centers are in India we need those jobs here. China is not the manufacturing cost saver it use to be because the price of fuel to get the containers to the USA is to the moon. (container cost have quintupled since last year anywhere from 15,000 to 25000 per container)”

“If you can remember when Clinton was in office he did these things and there was a budget surplus when he left office:

#1 closed military bases domestic and abroad. Do you remember the noise that was made when domestic bases where closed (ex. submarine naval base in Delaware)
#2 Clinton reduced the number of members of the military. Mandatory retirement if you had not recieved a promotion in the last two years or 20 years or more of service
#3 raised taxes on the wealthy: capital gains tax became more prevalent when Clinton was in office.
#4 reduced the welfare roster: Anybody remember welfare-to-work. You had six months to find a job or you no longer received welfare. Also, he create a job welfare credit. Businesses received tax credit for hiring those on welfare ($2500 per person). I remember filling out a form stating whether or not I was on any kind of public assistance (was not, never been).

results:budget surplus and economy was booming”

hp blogger Robert L. Borosage replied on Oct 15, 2008 at 11:26:59

“Right, but Clinton didn't inherit the mess that Obama will inherit. First priority will have to be to get the economy moving. Clinton -- and Bob Rubin -- worried about interest rates choking off growth, and essentially cut a deal with Greenspan. They'd do deficit reduction; he'd not raise interest rates (much).

Now interest rates are about as low as they can be. The Fed is flooding the banks with dough, guarantees etc. And the economy is still headed down.

It will take fiscal policy -- spending or tax cuts -- to get the country going. And the former is much more effective.”

“I am an African-American raised in Eastern North Carolina. In a small town with population of about 750 at the most. I left the small town to go to college because I refused to pick cucumbers and tobacco to make a living. I have encounter subtle and overt racism in my short 35 years on this earth. What John McCain did last night is try to marginalize Obama in the eyes of those who live in poor towns in that Appalachia, rural areas of SC,GA,NC,AL,TN, MS,TX so forth to let them know that he is one of them. But he is so out of touch that he doesn't know that people do not have jobs in these areas. They want jobs and when you are hungry you don't care where the help comes from you take it.
His attempt was futile and way over the top at comedy. If he wanted to be a comedian he should have went to Hollywood instead of Washington. He is no-hero,no man, No McCain”

“John McCain blew Cindy off last night too. At the very end of the debate, she was calling to John so she could come out. He ignored her and walked off. She eventually fell in step. Did he forget the wives were there. Barack immediately went to Michelle and hugged her because he knew she was in Fayetteville NC earlier in the day speaking to military families at Fort Bragg and he was happy to see her. Where was Cindy all day yesterday, probably giving John a seltzer bath. Sarah Palin was in Greenville NC yesterday evening she arrived late and at dinner at a pizza joint. Don't let the name fool ya Boli's on the Boulevard. I am from Bethel NC and Greenville is a Boulevard of nothing.”
