Obama Asks For Your Questions On Health Care (VIDEO)

“Again, the assumption is made that the current system is laissez-faire. It is not, and if one is going to condemn it as such, he needs to first show that it actually is. In fact, the health care sector, along with the insurance sector, are two of the most heavily regulated and manipulated markets in the United States. It is not a coincidence that these are two of the most troubled markets as well.
You mention ever rising prices. That is a characteristic of a government manipulated market, not a free one. Even during the "age of the Robber Barons" after the Civil War, prices deflated steadily as production rapidly increased.
You seem like a person eager to learn. Give this a shot.

“Yes, because it was out of the good will and happy hearts of doctors, researchers and companies that brought us the profound medical science we have today.
What could be more naive than believing that Washington D.C. is looking out for your best interests, and will provide every man, woman and child with all the health care and jobs they could ever need? The incredible lack of skepticism and hesitancy towards political power on this forum is frightening, as is the perverse interpretation of history. There is no "continuing" to use the free market, since we are not currently using the free market.”

“Wasting time explaining to you the question I asked since you managed to distort it all out of context to try and make single payer the boogey man is futile. Let me make it quick and clear.
Congress has been bought by the health industry with campaign contributions. The best that you got right is that there is no free market except for those who own it by owning the seats in Congress. They don't have to actually sit in those seats to demand the market work but only for them.
Skepticism? Frightening? Let a bean counter stand in the way of you and death and then come back and tell me about how the insurance executive suite is looking out for my health. In this case I'll take my chances with government.”

“The free market works when the greedy drive for profits aligns incentives in positive ways. For luxury goods, it works really well as prices are set with supply vs demand. When it comes to something that one needs to such as health insurance, the drive for profit aligns incentives against the interests of the American people. In the case of health insurance, it is advantageous to find technicalities to deny coverage when someone makes a claim within the obvious plan rules, often called rescission. It is advantageous for companies to make complicated sets of rules to specify what is covered and in what specific circumstances. This also makes it harder for people to tell which plan is better, allowing marketing to fill in the gap. Management thinks its good for management to make even more money nearly all of the time. As their compensation increases, the percentage of the money spent on claims is reduced, inflating insurance prices.
If the free market is so good at being efficient in all cases, then why are we spending a significantly higher amount of our GDP on health care than other industrialized nations that have single payer plans?”

“"People need jobs and health care now."
Is that all the further your analysis takes you? What a profound statement.
The more I read Huffington Post, the more hopeless I feel.”

“Sure, they can be used for good and bad. But this is government we're discussing. The pendulum of power swings. Don't be so quick to excuse your side for an overstep of power because as we all know the Republicans are more than happy to make you pay when they get power.”

“"It's called having a plan."
I have a book on my desk right now. It's called "New Russia's Primer: The Story of the Five Year Plan," published in 1931. This "planning" idea isn't new. It's been tried and it has failed. Or, I should specify here, that it is "central planning" that has failed. The free economy plans through a naturally regulating, decentralized process which coordinates production across time in the most efficient and humanly beneficial way possible according to known methods.”
