PG-13 at 25: Will the Movies Ever Grow Up (Again)?
Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 12:10:26 in Entertainment
“It all comes down to risk aversion. Sex is scary. Even if we elected a "liberal" president, the studios see trying to sell something that may be objectionable as a big risk. They understand the mind of a teenage boy, but anything beyond that is too much. If a well-made movie about Darwin didn't find a distributor because they were all afraid of the conservative public, what hope is there for an adult story about anything?”
Why Joe Biden Should Resign

“There are better ways to show disapproval than quitting. VPs don't usually have a big platform, but they have the use of the press corps. If Joe uses it wisely, that would be a hell of a lot better than quitting and fading into VP oblivion.”

“Time has been swirling around the drain for a long time and now they have gone down into the sewer. Journalism is not their calling any more. They are Fox News in print..”

“They are merely desperate in an attempt to get a magazine sold that is obviously failing like so many print media. The reason for it is lack of integrity in reporting.”

Put Art Works Back in Stimulus Plan
Commented Feb 13, 2009 at 22:46:01 in Politics
“Don't you understand that artists start companies with help from foundations and corporations who DON"T HAVE ANY MONEY NOW! Artists sell their work to PEOPLE WHO HAVE MONEY. In an economic downturn, artists are hurt just as much if not more than other groups. You see art as extraneous. Many of us believe that it is as important as any other endeavor.
Why should we be willing to fund jobs for people who build roads but not those who make art. Is one group of workers more deserving?”

pepenero replied on Feb 14, 2009 at 13:41:48
“Yes, in the immediate sense the roadworker is more deserving. Your food comes in on the roads, as does the ambulance and other useful devices.
Art is not a business and the selling of it is not the point. It is it's own point. Art has no function, won't feed you nor wash your clothes.
If you are making art in order to sell it you are in it for all the wrong reasons.”

“They didn't Chyron any of the choruses. I wish they had. But really, it was a great concert so why all the complaints?”
BarryChamplain replied on Jan 19, 2009 at 12:46:40
“"All the complaints" should be an indication that at the least, something is wrong.
We just came off an administration, where people who complained were, first off, complainers. Second, they were constantly measured against "the majority"; if your dissident view did not reflect the lion's share of warm bodies surveyed... shut up. You were preposterous, solely by your lack of overwhelming numbers, and therefore, you were illegitimate.
Note if you will that all the dissidents this time are that technical "minority" who believe in the shame-free public presence of the GLBT community (even if you are, like me, not part of that population... white folks marched with King, too, you know). And that the calculated Obama m.o. is to keep them all distracted and backstage, and intimidate them into not spoiling the party (for the greater cause of "change"), so as not to piss off the crossover Republicans, "conservative Democrats" and Undecideds who finally decided.
Which is really swell and a pretty sharp way to operate, unless, I guess, you're gay. Or are offended by the very concept of second-class citizenship.”

Adventures in Early Voting
Commented Oct 28, 2008 at 00:41:38 in Living
“I have to say, early voting for the first time in my life, it felt amazing to fill in that little dot for Obama. More than any other vote in my life. Here in North Carolina, we have a somewhat confusing ballot, but when I have gone out canvassing for Obama, one of the things we go over and over with voters is how they have to vote first for president, then for straight ticket (or not), and then for non-partisan candidates. I wish there were some way to be sure my vote was counted correctly, too. Since we fill out a paper ballot, there is a paper trail (for backup only), but it is then scanned into a computer and I worry that the computers might flip some votes. Guess there is no way to be sure. But I have my fingers crossed. Hope!”

“"she assumes that we are all as ill-informed as she."
It works for her base. She is governor of a state with the one of the highest dropout rates in the country. You think she is vaguely interested in education or even basic research? She and the GOP are counting on the ignorance and non-curious nature of their constituents. Why else would they continue the fiction based ads they are running and the deception laced stump speeches even after their points are corrected by the media? Palin is aggressively ignorant and her peeps see that as "refreshing."”

“The point is not how much the men may spend, it is who is paying for it and why. Obama resoles his shoes. McCain can afford to buy whatever he wants. But the Joe Sixpacks who sent the GOP $25 should not be paying for clothes Ms. Palin has said she hasn't even worn yet. Yet one more way the McCain/Palin ticket is completely out of touch.”
