CES 2010: Apple Gets Trumped By Amazing Lenovo Table

The petitioning of we lemmings with function-encrusted toys never ends. Soon, when satellite connectivity catches-up with us, there'll be literally no place to run or hide.”

“"Was I addressing you?"

In case you haven't noticed, this IS a public blog. Netiquette doesn't seem to dictate that people who wish to comment on posts not directed at themselves must first ask, :May I cut in?"

"Have you been here the entire time?"

I've been following politics for 45 of my 56 years now. I may misunderstand a few things, but there's little that escapes me.”

“Harry, they think even less of us. I won't give in to hand-wringing on this one. Either we vacate and find a suitable desert in which to wander, leaving the 'spoils' to our myriad enemies, or we steel ourselves to finish this. Either way it'll make an excellent prologue to a third book.”

Harry Shearer replied on Jan 03, 2010 at 23:01:07

“Here's the bad news (from your point of view): the United Sates is, as a culture, too isolationist to "steel ourselves to finish this". That's why all the theorizing about long wars is based on the most shocking ignorance of all, the ignorance of the people of the United States.”

“"Maybe thirty attacks were thwarted. Perhaps even seventy-two."

By what? Are you saying that Iraq was that good a vacuum cleaner that it sucked them up so they couldn't commit terrorist acts? It certainly wasn't all the money Bush was investing in port security--he thought that was less important than preserving an elitist tax cut that didn't really stimulate the economy.”

Tsunami Anniversary: A Christmas Without War

Commented Dec 25, 2009 at 11:02:10 in Books

“This disaster anchors that particular Christmas in time, in my memory. Figuratively speaking, I can 'see' this ongoing as though it were yesterday. I won't go into detail but there was change as I was adapting to a new, temporary, environment and was transfixed by the upheaval, the tragedy on a Biblical scale, which these victims were suffering through. My little discombobulation pales.

I am having difficulty 'squaring' my perceptions of the elapsed-time between then and now. Where does five years go with such seeming rapidity? If I figure that out I'll let you know.”

Four Must-See Christmas Movies of the 1940s

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 20:40:13 in Entertainment

“"My all-time favorite continues to be the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol."

Mine too. The spareness of it, the 'clean' economy of dreary, soot-stained London. Marvelous.

"Come in, Come in and know me better, Man" ; spake The Spirit of Christmas Present.
The humility of that exhortation and I'm already feeling sorry for the embittered Ebenezer Scrooge. Would that redemption could come in the nick-of-time and as lovingly as Scrooge found it.

God Bless Us, Every One.”

Curbing Big Banks: Draw the Damn Line

“We The Melting-Pot are so disparate as to redefine gridlock. The other. more homogeneous, Societies are going to eat our lunch. Then go on to our dinner. The Chinese and Indian governments will simply mandate that The United States be crushed. And that is happening now.”

Remembering John Lennon, 29 Years Later

Commented Dec 13, 2009 at 08:06:12 in Entertainment

“It'll be 30 years soon-enough Joe. I was just leaving work, warming my car, when I tuned-in the local ABC affiliate broadcasting on the low-end of the FM band. I received the news from Howard too. If recollection will serve, it was near to 11:20 pm. Snow was upon the frigid ground. The enveloping darkness of the parking lot was cut by the twin beams of my headlights. My young wife and daughter were at home, warm in their beds, asleep, 20 miles to my south while 60 miles to my north, John Lennon had been cut down in the flower of his relative youth. I was twenty-four years old. If recollection will serve.”

Well then, here's to the crucible in which we love, live and toil for some as-yet undefined purpose. I'm all for it in the hopes of one day learning a reason for all of 'this'. Good show.”
