“"Where is the change we can believe in?"

What do you mean? Do you feel tricked or something? You shouldn't, if you paid attention.

He campaigned on more troops in Afghanistan. He promised to send more troops. Two years ago he said this, and repeated it steadily throughout the campaign. He said it in debates with John McCain. He said it in speeches across the country. Many, many times.

You might disagree with the policy, as I do (though I otherwise support him), but you can't act like he's reneging on promises and use his campaign slogan against him. This was no bait-and-switch----this was a promise kept.”

“The "no-bailout" idea is good, but not good enough.

I hate the money spent on bailing out these soulless leaches. I don't want it to happen again, either.

But my retirement was at AIG. If they had gone under, they'd have dragged lots of people like me (teachers and others) down with them. When they played with risky, unregulated instruments, they were gambling with my money.

I want them to be regulated going forward to protect investors rather than let them sink folks like me while the nation collectively shrugs.”

Give Thanks To Kathleen Sebelius For Saving 47,000 Women From Death By Cost-Benefit Analysis

Commented Nov 29, 2009 at 00:04:30 in Living

“I read it. It supports his point.

The article you mention indicates that the screening may save 2 lives out of 1900, rather than only 1. (That's with a rate of 7.47 deaths per 1900, rather than 9.5 per 1900, which is the difference between .39% dying with the screenings, and .50% dying without.)

You might argue that 2 extra survivals out of 1900 (let's call it about 1 in a thousand) may not be worth much. But I prefer Mr. Lakoff's framing.”

“Somebody may have said that, but it's not in this article. The word "invite" is not used.

It says this: "Their statistics say that the life of "only" one woman in 1900 will be saved if mammograms start at age 40 instead of age 50." Or, only 1 in 1900 will die if they change the recommendation to 50, regardless of how many are currently following the policy.”

“Are you saying that mammograms cause unnecessary surgery? That it would be better not to do them?”

TXfemmom replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 09:49:02

“The task force and this person refer to unnecessary surgery. Now, many biopsies are done with a needle, so it is more of a procedure than a surgery. These people looked at actuarial tables and decided it was cheaper to let women die than to do the testing and biopsies. Sounds like Ford and their exploding gas tanks on PInto's thing. I mean that in the most unflattering way.”

blue53 replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 21:28:19

“Almost any benign finding is biopsied, and most women-because they know that they are there--even if benign--want them out. Are they taking granulomas out of lungs--when they show up on your chest x-ray? No is the answer.

The internet is burning up with everyone’s opinions--yet no one bothers to look up the task force, the recommendations, or the data. I know-everybody knows somebody…. You got to do the work. Talk to your doctor, if you want or need one every year—you can have one ---but know the risks--you could have unnecessary surgery.
From the reaction, you would think they said not to have a mammogram in your 40's at all.--They did not. Here is the first recommendation:
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening mammography, with or without clinical breast examination, every 1-2 years for women aged 40 and older.
http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/3rduspstf/Breastcancer/

The review. Read the conclusions.
http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab001877.html

Races, and runs have made women feel better, but nothing to get these basic questions answered--the technology to advance--or at least provide the education that is apparently needed.
Sorry if this answer seems as if I am annoyed--but when I see this used as a political issue-it makes me sick. I did mammography for twenty-five years, and my mother had breast cancer at age-37, I know what this disease does.”

Slow And Steady As We "Race To The Top"

“Excellent discussion. Thanks for weighing in.

Charters in Arizona have not proven to be effective at all. After 15 years, they still lag behind public schools on measures of achievement, on the average. If they were gonna work, we'd have seen it by now.

Some people think charters are inherently more innovative than public schools. Not true. It's magical thinking to hope it would be so.

Innovation at public schools is limited by state and federal law, not by teacher imagination. NCLB and high stakes testing don't leave much room for creative, engaging education.”
