It's not 'pretty cool' that these people breached white house security. They fact that they've become minor cult heroes shows just how badly our priorities have deteriorated.

It's us. We the people are the problem. Look at what impresses us: The balloon boy, the party crashers, Snuggies, Grand Theft Auto, Kanye West, Sarah Palin......

It's not the banks, or Wall Street, or Terrorists, or China. It's not the evil Republicans or even the evil Democrats; It is a country full of ill-informed, overfed, easily distracted m0r0ns who would rather watch their 'reality' on TV than go out into the world and learning something.

None of the troubles we've endured over the past several years would befall an informed and engaged public. Even a significant minority of intelligent people would help. But we are so easily manipulated, and so politically timid that the cynics and opportunists will continue riding us for many years to come.

But I digress. There's no way we should be glorifying these people. Not just for disrespecting the presidency, and (possibly) breaking the law, but for being the very embodiment of the insipid shallowness that now defines this country.”

This comment is dumb on so many levels. The scientific value of this discovery aside (and it is huge), NASA serves this country and its economy in many tangible ways. The research driven by NASA has spawned countless products, technological advances, and entire industries. The federal spending dedicated to NASA is minuscule when compared to Social Security and Medicare. The money it does spend goes almost entirely to American companies and institutions.

It has nothing at all to do with a 'anticipated water crisis facing the earth'. It's about knowledge for its own sake. Try it sometime.”
