Rupert Murdoch Apologizes For Cartoon: "The Buck Stops With Me"
Commented Feb 24, 2009 at 13:32:51 in Media
“Mr. Murdoch apologized only when there was no other option.
The first apology, by his editor, was so weak and insulting that things only got worse. Murdoch didn't fire the editor, he didn't direct the cartoonist to publish an explanation or apology.
Murdoch waited a week to apologize, after broad public outcry, outrage, loss of newspaper sales and plenty of subscription cancellations forced his hand.
Please locate the courage or class in Mr. Murdoch's actions.”

19-square-mile ice sheet breaks loose in Canada

“Yes, the stated diagnoses on Ellesmere Island were incorrect. The ice ring breaks and then comes back every decade or so , and has done so for maybe hundreds of years. To be fair, it's been receding at an accelerated rate over the past 40 years, including the underlying ice layers. Researchers were overzealous, or misinterpreted the data or presented it incorrectly.
So congratulations, you've scored one half of one data error against an ocean of otherwise solid evidence.
You will never reach the shore in this fight, unless that's the point, you just want to argue.
If you like to argue truth and philosophy and what's right, then let's forget about the facts for a moment,
and answer a few simple, common sense questions:
What's the downside of a call to arms for a greener world?
What if AGW is one hundred percent wrong, but by going along with the idea we end up with cleaner air, water, soil, renewable fuels, healthier children, fish, plants and animals? What if we left the world better than we came into it, and all because we got too jittery about the weather? How bad would that be, Mr. Slagle?
How would a cleaner, greener earth interfere with your agenda, and how would your agenda serve a better purpose than that?”

McCain Surrogates Struggle To Defend Palin's Experience

“No matter how many embarrassing excuses Republicans make, they always turn out to be just believable enough to get elected.
Republicans position themselves as the true patriots of this country, and no one argues that point with them. Nothing could possibly be further than the truth, yet somehow Democrats allow this infuriating charade to continue.
Of course, God is also on the side of Republicans. Obviously.
Republicans don't have to be accurate or intelligent to get elected. Republicans can lie, stretch the truth, slander, pander, change their platform, whatever--they just wave the flag and mention Jesus, and it's another four years in office. No fact is safe, no logic or common sense has any footing.
What are Democrats going to do? How are we going to fight blind faith and nationalism in the face of real problems that need solving--problems that will never get resolved if Republicans keep the White House?
We'd better figure it out fast, because Obama didn't bounce all that high this week, did he?”

Dr.Samuel Johnson "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel".
Ambrose Bierce amended with " I beg to submit that it is the 1st"
H.L. Mencken jumped in with "But there is somethingeve worse, it is the first, last and middle range of fools".
Obama and Biden will have to keep stressing the issues ie economy, jobs, tax breaks, infrastructure which will create jobs as well a alternative energy which will also create jobs, mortgage crisis and people loosing their homes, foreign policy. I would hope if McCain/Palin stress personality and rediculous stuff like that they will loose. Too many people are suffering to care about personality & a woman with a pretty face.”

Otherwise, the Constitution would require a billion different scenarios explained, described or enumerated, and linked to every Amendment when applicable, and that's crazy.”
Republicans Block Extra Taxes On Oil Companies
Commented Jun 10, 2008 at 14:37:15 in Business
“Oil is the only major commodity allowed to be traded on speculation with little or no collateral. The GOP stuck a loophole in the End of Enron bill so you could still speculate on oil here and overseas, and now our own oil supply is speculated on by foreign nations, and the corporations who have bases overseas profit by this. We have no control.
Morgan Stanley, through its overseas interests and speculative trading on oil now owns almost all heating oil or natural gas in New England. The moment the oil leaves the storage tank, it depreciates. So they drive up the price in expectation of the better global price. And the demand goes up. So the price goes up. So the demand goes up. So the price goes up. So the speculation goes up.
The only thing we'd have to do to fix this problem is to put two words into that 90's amendment, the one that ended speculative trading without sufficient collateral: Including Oil.
Once ended, the price of oil would drop 30 percent within months, 40 percent within a year.”

Hillary Clinton To Suspend Campaign Saturday
Commented Jun 06, 2008 at 02:56:48 in Politics
“To cook her numbers, Clinton decided at the end of her race to include the discounted votes in Michigan and Florida. You know, the states that only she really campaigned in, because they were disqualified and the other candidates dutifully did not campaign or put their name on the ballot.
Every candidate swore they would not count those votes, swore they would have no bearing once the DNC ruled them out ---yet she alone does so now. To claim a higher tally, she also has to ignore Obama's uncounted votes in caucus states--thousands of them. She's the only one ignoring them. Delegates and superdelegates know the truth.”

Donuts aren't evil. Great tasting soda pop, in and of itself, isn't evil. Jury is out about coffee.
But the Carlyle Group represents everything I resent about global corporate influence.
So I can't patronize these products anymore.
I refuse to be that hypocritical. It's horrible enough that I still have to buy gasoline--
it'll be a while until I can afford an alternative.
But this small change in where I stop for my morning coffee is one I'll gladly make.”

But I've often wondered what we'll do about the several million people who currently work in the insurance sector. Make them instant federal employees, drop their incomes by 75 percent and tell them to get cracking on 50 million new claimants being processed? Put them to work in renewable energy or DOT infrastructure? How do you enact a broad stroke change like Universal Health Care smoothly and not disrupt an enormous industry, as well as a significant source of revenue for Wall Street and the Goverment?
And how will the medical industry handle this? Yes, it will be the end of paperwork. But everything else might be anarchy.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has a good handle on this. I'll bet Obama would too.”
