Michael Moore's Grapes of Wrath

“Saw the film a few days ago. It should be required viewing for all in America. Was impressed by Bishop Tom Gumbleton of Detroit's remarks. Not suprising as he as always been very liberal in his views. Too bad he doesn't represent a majority of the Catholic hypocritical hierarchy.”

memi replied on Oct 11, 2009 at 20:30:54

“Agreed, Fateh! Dan's article great!!
Outside U.S. Moore's film is viewed like a Frank Capra populist movie and brings to mind the true art of film-making to stir and inspire with ordinary heroes. The kind of American hero that is nonexistent Bush The Barbarian. Remember Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Now, " Michael Moore goes to Hollywood" and makes a documentary for the People!

In Canada, Capitalism is raising a stir and at the TIF it was attended to the point we had to wait outside for hours! Rep. Marcy Kaptur is a real hero and so's Elizabeth Warren, the overseer of the robber barrons who are now taking their jets to Europe while people are being evicted.

BROOKSLEY BORN, the woman who chaired the FCTC and warned Alan Greenspan about the fianancial "Fraud" that would ruin the nation, was mistreated by the sexist Greenspan and the boys in the green leather club and she resigned. Michael should have included that great prophet! Only mistake! The woman was a respected lawyer who wrote memos to everyone in l996-7. No one would listen. Greenspan and Rubin (who's been sued for fraud for millions!) couldn't wait to get rid of the lady....

Hillary Clinton said during the primary, she had a plan for people dealing with foreclosures. It was sensible, specific--unlike whatever Obama has (or NOT) done! Americans deserved a more mature, knowledgeable President with guts--not baritone rhetoric. Thank Zeus Mike Moore's around,eh?!”

Health Care: Is it a Right or . . . Is It a Commodity?

Commented Sep 17, 2009 at 14:55:23 in Politics

“Have said this forever. Access to basic health care should be a right and not a commodity to be bought and sold. There is no need to change the Constitution for this. The Constitution was written in the late 1700's and has been ammended as necessary. Folks want to throw this argument in but to me it is irrelevant. UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER OR BUST!!! State waiver/option to whatever comes out federally. We in New Mexico have a plan and want to be able to pass it in our state.”

“The Baucus bill is a piece of legislative trash. Obama and the rest of congress best tell him this. Have emailed my senators, Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall from New Mexico, and told them what I think of this Baucus debacle. We need health care reform not health insurance reform. Just give us a state waiver/option so that all the states are not forced into whatever mess comes out federally.”

"Resistance Efforts," Guns and the Constitution

Commented Aug 19, 2009 at 18:38:50 in Politics

“Have said this before but will say it again. That ammendment was written in the late 1700's so that state militias could be formed when the new country had no standing army or navy. If people want to bear arms, they should have to carry weapons from that era. Semi-automatics should not be allowed to private citizens. Yes, I know the argument that all the thugs have access to these weapons. Good argument for more gun control than less in my view. People carrying these weapons in crowds and at political rallies should be banned.”

waylon70 replied on Aug 19, 2009 at 18:47:56

To Insurance Companies, Pharma, Repubs and Blue Dogs: Why Do You Want to Kill Me?

Commented Jul 28, 2009 at 16:22:23 in Politics

“Good luck, Mr. D'Antonio!! You are not the only one with this problem. A large percent of bankruptcies are due to medical bills and many of those individuals had insurance at the time but it didn't cover adequately. I believe that access to health care is a basic human right. It should be paid for in the same way we pay for police and fire protection. The tax code needs to be revamped so that the richest Americans pay their FAIR share. The burden for too long has been on the middle class. We need UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER not for profit insurance companies. To all those who have made negative comments, remember this, you all are only one bad illness or trauma away from this same scenario.”

lletaa replied on Jul 28, 2009 at 19:41:24

“Agree 100%. Funny thing is investing in health care by a country is good for business. Just as good roads, fire protection, police etc, are necessary for capitalism so is a healthy, happy consumer.”

A Solution to Our Health Care Crisis

Commented Jul 24, 2009 at 17:48:38 in Politics

“UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER is the only way to save money. A public option competing with for profit insurance companies is doomed to fail. Then the fat cats will say, "told you so". We need state waivers or options so that whatever comes out of DC can be pre-empted by states that have a plan better than the national plan. NM has a plan. CA has a plan that was approved by your legislature twice only to be vetoed by your current Gov. Several other states also have plans in the works. Canada got to universal coverage one province at a time. I think we can do the same in the USA.”

Rational-1 replied on Jul 24, 2009 at 23:23:34

“If Canada's healthcare is so perfect, then why do their citizens come to the US for life-saving care? Because they can't get the same high quality healthcare in Canada. We need reform, not a worse healthcare system. Allow insurance companies to compete across state lines.”

“Must admit that when I first saw the title of the article I was upset. However, after quickly reading the article I must agree with Jamie. For all of the varied reasons she states Michael did become addicted. Addiction is a terrible problem. As a nurse, I have seen too many people with this problem. The addict has to first acknowledge their problem and make a firm resolve to quit. No program will work without this. Michael had too many people enabling him and his habit. He appears to have been a loving father to his three children. I just hope some sensible adult steps in to fill the gap left by his untimely death.”

We have local cheese makers, goats milk and all sorts of stuff, locally grown lamb, poultry, beef, etc. The friendliness of people at the markets is another draw. I remember local farmers markets in IN and MI where I was born and raised, Nothing is better than local, small farm produce.”

Obama Gives a Good Speech, But Will It Help Lt. Choi?

Commented Jun 30, 2009 at 17:58:00 in Home

“Choi is a military man with skills this country needs. "Don't ask, don't tell " is an outdated concept. Obama is Commander-in-Chief. He sould rock the boat a litlle and tell the military that he is against this idea. Not having a military background, I'm not sure this is possible. However, from a justice stand-point, believe it is. What consenting adults do in private is their business not all the world's. Gays and lesbians should have rights just as so-called straights.”

Dengold replied on Jun 30, 2009 at 19:24:50

“I don't support the present policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, but it was implemented early in the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton. I could be wrong (I admit that I do not know when Lt. Choi joined the military), but I suspect that this policy was already in place before Lt. Choi chose to join. I don't see how a civil rights argument can be made for Lt Choi since he was not forced to join the military. I served for almost 25 years in the Air Force, and I knew by making that choice that I surrendered certain "rights" or "privileges" enjoyed by civilians. I knew that I could be forced to leave my family, that I couldn't decide for myself what job I would hold, that I might have put myself in harm's way even if the cause involved was not one I completely supported. It was a choice I made, and, like all choices, it involved consequences. I was lucky since the vast majority of those consequences proved favorable for me. But if they had not, I would not have felt that I had any "right" to complain. If choices have no consequences, the morality of choice is lost.”

“I grew up in Gary, IN also. One of my uncles knew Michael's father. The Jackson children never had much of a childhood. One thing I will always respect Michael for is that he cared for his parents when he was rolling in money. He did not have a privileged life as one person wrote. Take a look at where he grew up. The Jacksons were discovered by Diana Ross in a strip club in Calumet City, IL just across the state line from IN. They had a gig there as a band. She introduced them to the Motown executives. That is not widely known. Yes, he was influenced in all sorts of ways by people he trusted, some in very negative fashions. All I can say is Rest in peace Michael and to his children, family and friends, so sorry for your loss.”

“We, as a nation and world, are going to have to make some very difficult decisions now and in the coming years. I agree with 3 of your four points. We need to stress wellness and preventative medicine instead of treating disease once it is present. We need to discontinue fancy procedures for folks already debilitated. Hospice, palliative care and death with dignity (physician assisted suicide) need to be considered and offered as options to those who desire them. We need to stop thinking that we must keep a body alive at all costs at the beginning and end of life. More money is spent attempting to save those who should be allowed to die than is necessary. No one in America should have to go without BASIC health care. I am nearly 68 years of age. Have a DNR/DNI signed, my family knows my wishes and am ready to depart this world whenever it is my time. Have been a nurse for 47 years and have seen too much prolonged suffering and painful procedures done in vain. Insurance and drug companies have made live miserable for the majority of Americans. People should not lose their life savings or homes because of medical bills.”

I too plan to stop any donations to anything he begs for as he only listens to "big money" and not the grassroots folks who got him elected.”

“For many years Israelis and Palestinians lived in the area of a British mandate. After WWII, Jews from the war torn countries loaded boats bound for Jerusalem. The state of Israel was born in 1947 (or thereabouts). The new state forced Palestinians off their lands and have been oppressing these people ever since. Amnesty International issued an alert on 06-05-09, Israel demolished the homes of Palestinians in the villages of Ras al-Ahmer and Hadidiya. 280 people were displaced . They have been denied access to water and their animals have been confiscated. Before I was aware of this and similiar issues, I was very defensive of the nation of Israel. However, it seems that the oppressed have become the oppressors. Two wrongs don't make a right.”
