Kevin Smith Defends "Twilight" (VIDEO)

Commented Nov 27, 2009 at 12:13:29 in Comedy

“My point is that after examining the themes and stories in the books, they are decidedly NOT for 12 year old girls. Well, they're for 12 year old girls like porn is for 14 year old boys: not if parents want their kids to grow up with healthy ideas about what love and relationships are all about.

I understand the "fantasy" part of it; each geek enjoys their own brand of dress-up. But my point is that unlike many other fantasy worlds that geeks have latched onto, the themes in Twilight are not redeeming- they are detrimental to a young girl's development of realistic expectations and understanding of love and relationships. If anyone treated my daughter like Edward treats Bella, they'd get a good smack from the back of my hand. Hanging out with a reformed serial killer who has to resist the urge to murder you on a minute-by-minute basis is not "romantic": it's psychotic. Reminds me of those sick women who send love letters to Ted Bundy. NOT a good theme to build a "fantasy world" around for young girls.”

“I completely agree with everything you've written. My problem with the series is not that it is "too young" for me (though it certainly is), it is that the writing is trite, anti-feminist, and a bastardization of good sci-fi/fantasy novels. The Twilight series was the first I *ruled out* when trying to find a high-quality fantasy book for my 15-year-old niece to read.

And on another note, for those of us who enjoy vampire films and the like, I hate that this series destroyed an already weak film genre by helping to churn out films without any valuable characterization or adherence to vampire archetypes or legends.”

“What's the middle ground again? God exists, but only on Tuesdays and Thursdays? Think before you type.”

n4m replied on Nov 26, 2009 at 21:14:06

“No, the moon goddess exists on Mondays. .
The Viking god Odin exists on Wednesday, Thor exists on Thursday, and Viking goddess Freya exists on Friday.
Saturdays is for the Greek god Saturn, and
Jesus, and the other sun/son deities exist on. what else, Sunday.
Buddha and Mithra alternate Tuesdays.
I hope that clears things up for you.
I've written several times what I believe is the middle ground, so try reading my posts one more time.
If you still have questions, I'll be glad to elaborate.”

“I understand where he's coming from. Geeks have to protect other geeks and their obsessions, even if they aren't into that world in particular. Especially after George Lucas sold us a bill of goods, and Star Wars fans had to convince themselves that the three prequels weren't steaming piles of crap. (They certainly were).

But sorry, I just can't bring myself to do it with Twilight. And it's not the fans. It's Stephanie Meyer. Her story is just so flawed, the writing is so trite and uninspired, the characters are so hollow, the plot is not compelling, and the themes are of questionable taste. The anti-feminist undercurrent throughout the first two books and movies is not so subtle. Meyer is just not a good writer. I understand young girls might not be able to discern that at twelve, but older women should know better. The depiction of love and relationships in the books are as unrealistic as the depiction of love and relationships in hardcore porn. The difference is hardcore porn isn't targeted to thirteen year olds with their parents along for the ride.”

BLSabob replied on Nov 26, 2009 at 12:10:42

“I think the point is that the books (and movies) aren't for US. They are for 12 year old girls and their particular brand of fantasy. This is just one step removed from their love of unicorns and Barbie Dolls.”

“Even with something as harmless as this, you can see that Bill O'Reilly is just barely suppressing his disdain for being "roasted". It's obvious despite the pained smile on his face that he doesn't appreciate this in the slightest. It's like when Triumph the Insult Comic Dog went on his show. Bill does that once in awhile to try to "show" how he's a "good sport". But anyone paying attention can see the anger just under the surface of this man. By the way, all the dialogue for appearances like this is heavily vetted, and during rehearsal Bill O'Reilly gets veto power over every line.”

“Right after 9/11, I recall wacko rightwingers using the Cole and the embassy attacks as terrorist attacks to tarnish Clinton's record. Using that definition, the Bush administration allowed Americans to suffer a terrorist attack pretty much EVERY DAY through the duration of the Iraq war. Every time our soldiers were targeted, it was a terrorist attack.

I'm not surprised that Perino's brain is so clouded she can't even remember the worst terrorist attack in the history of our nation was under Bush's watch because they spent so much time trying to blame it on anyone but themselves. Conservatives are so deluded, they just make up their own reality and repeat the mantra until they convince themselves it's legitimate.”

“You are purposefully misreading the terms being used to interpret them as you please to satisfy your predetermined ideological viewpoint, not as they were used in an ongoing scientific study. “This nonsense created by Drudge and you fringe wingdings is based on a comprehensive and (seemingly) purposeful misunderstanding of scientific research terminology. The only way to make these emails mean what the conservative freaks want it to mean is to take the words completely out of the context in which they were used. Any honest scientist involved in number crunching during ongoing studies and research would attest to this. But you wackos only listen to the .1% of scientists bought and paid for by the oil companies. Nice try, bucko.”

“Some people here are missing the point. It's not about Google. It's about consumers. Microsoft and Rupert the Malevolent can plot whatever they want against Google, and might even convince some companies to be exclusive with search engines. But the hype will disappear as soon as the companies catch on to the fact that there are myriad routes that people utilize to find content that don't require a search engine (like this site for instance) and the percentage of people who use search engines to find news is not that significant. Unless they convince consumers that they must pay for content, it's all pointless. After receiving free access for the first decade of the internet, I don't see the numbers of people who would be willing to pay multiple times for news content is not enough to build a new business model around.”
