A Rebuttal to Howard Dean: I Am a U.S. Senator, and I Will Vote For This Bill

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 17:12:15 in Politics

“Of course you'd like this bill Senator Kirk. You live in a State that has the same program that this bill imposes on the rest of the country. Your state has the highest health care costs on the planet but your big contributors are happy.
Massachusetts is having to cannabalize existing safety net programs to feed this miserable system and pay for CEO's yachts. But what do you care when the taxpayers have your back.
This bill is what happens when Senators who know nothing about medicine and care nothing about the lives of their constituents write legislation..
Dean is physician and you're not. He said no one could vote for this bill in good conscience. Apparently that is something you lack along with his credentials as a physcian. The one thing you don't lack is hubris.
This bill is ignorant, mean spirited and it won't work. Hopefully, your vote will cost you your job. I'm sure that won't bother you because you'll get a cushy billet in the health insurance industry. It will be however, a great relief to the rest of us.”

Small Business Credit Crunch Hampering Job Creation

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 19:14:55 in Politics

“Congress and the President were foolish to give away so many of taxpayer's dollars without any conditions.
You can fix that by demanding banks start lending or give back the TARP funds. Small businesses generate more jobs than any other sector of the business community. If you are serious, submit a bill.”

Obama's Dilemma in Afghanistan

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 16:02:19 in World

“Your argument ignores an important moral questions.
We have no right to be in Afghanistan. The Afghans did not attack us. The Afghan people don't want us or our corrupt government.
There is no moral justification for continuing to kill Afghans because Obama believes this is the way to solidify his political power.
Logisitically it's all wrong.
The last surge made things worse, galvanizing the Afghan people against the US presence. There is no evidence that repeating this mistake will have a different outcome.
All intelligence reports agree than less than a hundred Al Qaida remain in the bortder area. Our troop numbers will be at 100000 after Obama's latest escalation; 1000 US soldiers, per operative. If 700 soldiers can't hunt down a single Al Qaida operative, what makes anyone think 100 thousand can't.
He'll be spending 30 million a year to kill each operative.
None of it makes sense because that is not the reason Obama made his decision. It's pipeline politics. A new one is scheduled to begin in 2010. He's not going to withdraw US forces in the foreseeable future.”

owleye replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 00:19:13

“This the military-industrial complex DEM style. Every congressional district, every state, has
companies -- large or small that make military equipment. The US economy has survived on
gearing up for war since WWII and with it -- jobs and the economy. And no one -- GOP or DEM is willing to tamper with it. From making military trucks in Oshkosh, WI to Night Vision in Boston.
To drone programs in Seattle. Lots of DEM's make as much $ as the GOP off war. Until we
find peace in making money -- like high speed electric rail, Harvard quality education for all,
Universal health care, and nannies in every home like the French! -- Nothing will change.
But it is somehow immoral to do this in the United States. We have to do ourselves -- ride our own horse, cruise in an SUV. As nation we don't touch each other...... So we have lots of emotional, social and psychological barriers to break down before we can ride on the high speed electric rails without killing each other. "I had that seat first." "NO it's mine. All mine!”

The Republican Way: Keeping Everything The Way It Is

Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 13:30:34 in Politics

“Your premise is flawed.
The bills before congress mean more money for health insurers; a lot more.
They get 50 million new customers, subsidized by tax payers and are no caps on premiums, co-pays or deductions. Taxpayers will take the poorest and the sickest off the hands of insurers.
It locks us into a system that skims 25% of our health care dollars and provides no health services.
It's not the Republicans that are blocking real reform, it's the Democrats and the Obama White House.
Instead of leading on reform, Obama cut secret deals with CEO's. When the Progressive Caucus stood firm on a strong pubic option, Obama sent Rahm to knock heads together.
:Pelosi stripped an amendment from the House bill that prevented insurers from suing states that set up their own single payer system.
Now they are trying to hoodwink you into blaming the GOP and supporting their "worse than nothing" bill.”

“What do you mean, it provides no health services? What do you call preventing the exclusion of people due to pre-existing conditions or charging people of different genders differing amounts or preventing a whole host of abuse practices of the insurance industry? Not to mention the fact that there will be an opt-out public option, and if it proves to be a useful to way to force down insurance costs, more and more states will adopt it. It IS better than nothing.

We also need to do something about obesity and pollution, which in addition to the baby boomer demographic are making massive contributions to health care costs.”

“While the GOPs are denouncing Medicaid, the Democrats are stealing from it.
They will be slashing a half a trillion from Medicare and Medicaid to pay for their faux health care reform bill. It isn't reform, it's tarp for the health care insurance industry and big pharma.
Please, Huffington Post, look into these bills. They are worse than nothing.”

So if we can make those programs run better and more efficiently with less money due to proper investment, why not trim some cash from those budgets?”

Four Lessons for Democrats in Tuesday's Elections

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 17:59:39 in Politics

“Republicans can still win elections because the Democrats are useless.
In every case, the candidates who lost were lack luster and ran poor campaigns. Rahm Emmanuel and the cowardly Democratic Party smple refuse to back populists and or anyone who won't embrace the corrupt Party line.
It's not the "populist message" that is the problem, it's the Democrat's elitist protectionism and unwillingness to create real change they promised that has people upset.
Voters aren't blaming the incumbents for other people's sins, they are blaming them for their own sins.
The Democratic Congress has been incrediby weak on every important issue. There is cap on health care spending but no cap on illicti war and no restrictions on the war industry fraud. Wall Street, Banksters and now the health care industry will all get their share but there is next to nothing for the people hurt by and economic collapse that congress could have prevented.
In spite of Obama's mighty rhetoric, here is nothing worthy of the name "leadership" coming from the White House. Instead of "change we can believe in", Obama devotes his time to fund raising from the very people that have crushed our democratic experiment.
That's why voters either voted for the none of the above or punished incumbents.”

“Amen Bob.
But let's not stop with food. The flouride that is being added to our water supply is a toxin. It is an industrial waste product that has no business being ingested by anyone.
Then there are a whole raft of other chemicals from frack to rocket fuel seeping into our drinking water as industries use our soil and water as personal garbage can..
Most personal care products, especially for women contain known carcinogens. Even toothpaste can be a problem.
Good air quality is critical to health. Many buildings where workers are housed have poor air quality.
Our urban centers suffer from automobile pollution. Heavy industry pollute the air and everyone from cruise ships to refineries dump their waste into it.
Human health cannot be maintained in a degraded environment.”

Why Obama's Mideast Policy Will Work

Israel is quickly becoming a sole catalyst for a third world war and it, like our former Bush Administration, is so ignorant of global human affairs that it will self righteously bring down the world in flames along with itself. What the hell are we supporting these idiots for? Give them an inch and they want a mile, then another mile, and still another, even if they agreed to stop at the first mile.

As long as Obama lends his undying support for Israel, any peace effort will only be lip service to the Arab population and it's just SSDD over and over again. Sooner or later Israel's own lack of integrity will bring that region down, because, despite Obama's best intentions, Israel won't quit until it gets back at the rest of the world for allowing the holocaust to happen.”

It's always a question of risk versus benefit. It is true that this will be the largest vaccine rollout in U.S. history and that is CRUCIAL to keep monitoring for possible side-effects. But as you note, the effects of this new strain ARE similar to the usual seasonal flu - that's exactly the point; patients can get very sick and die. Every year an estimated 36,000 Americans die from the regular seasonal flu, which is why vaccination is recommended for appropriate groups, just as it is for the 2009 H1N1.

“Ambassador Marc,
I've heard this story before. The domino theory that was used to fallaciously support the war in Viet Nam. This is just the Middle Eastern varient. It was wrong then and it's wrong now.
According to regional specialists Al Qaida has not been active in Afghanistan for years. Might reconstitute, could reconstitute? Since when is it legal to invade and occupy countries because something "might " happen?
Anyway you know that is not why our military was sent to. Afghanistan. They were sent because the Taliban gave the oil pipeline contract to an Argentinian company. Our presence is about protecting that pipeline and maintaining a friendly, albeit corrupt, puppet in power.”

Who Will Be Hurt if the Democrats Pass Health Care Alone

Commented Sep 02, 2009 at 14:29:38 in Politics

“The GOPers first try bullying first, then they go to fear. You'd think the Democrats would have developed an effective strategy to counter them. They do the same things over and over again.
Health care reform without a robust public option isn't health care reform. It's a big hand out to the corporations that have undermined our health care system.
No legislation would be better than that.
Health care is on the governing elites radar because it cuts into their profits. They are also predictable. They want a bill that rewards them for being rich and makes working Americans pick up the tab.
If they can't get this kind of legislation passed (the Senate bill), they'll have to go back to the drawing board and craft something that appeals to the progressive caucus.
I agree the GOP are not an issue. Health care can get done without them. That goes double for any other progressive legislation . The Democrats are giving away their power by trying to be "inclusive".”
