I believe that the public option is inconsistent with the back door deals he has made with big pharma and the health care insurance industry. Pres. Obama has 0 leverage over the Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, Mary Landreiu, and the like. Putting 100% of the blame on Pres. Obama completely misses the point.

Liberal groups "bailing" on Demcorats only ensures that no progressive agenda will EVER get done. The reason teh Democratic party is being held hostage by powerful conservative democrats is that the liberal base sat out too many election cycles. Liberal Dems couldn't raise the $$ so conservative Dems got elected and are now showing their conservative tendencies and blocking real reform.

With regard to Congress goign back to teh drawing board -- this obsession with a perfect bill is very damaging. The Original Social Security Act left millions of Americans out -- it was a bad piece of legislation. Yet, FDR still passed it and subsequent Congresses amended the act to include more and more people. The same goes for Health care reform. It won't be perfect and there will almost certianly be flaws in the programs. But getting it on the books makes it infinitely more easy to amend it at a later date. In 2010 or 2011, the Congress can focus 100% of their energy on the relatively narrow issue of a public option instead of the board and vague ides of total health care reform.”

A couple of years ago, there were many more people who just assumed the Federal Reserve was a federal agency and the dollar had to be backed up with a gold standard. Now they know that's not the case, and they're getting angry, and the Fed's days are numbered no matter what happens with this particular bill.”
