Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 08:08:51 in Politics

“Moveon is doing what Obama and the leadership should be doing--knocking some heads! How is it possible that having Dem control of the WH and Congress may very well translate into failure on a major Dem initiative? Sadly, I think a lot of this has to do with Obama's "can't we all get along" naivete. He's been rolled by everyone from House Republicans to Senate Dems to Netanyahu.”

“What really steams me (no pun intended), is that women are covered from head to toe, while men on the same beach are in shorts or bathing suits and t-shirts. While the women are not typically dressed in black, I have seen this same phenomenon on countless beaches in the US. How is it that only one sex has to be "modest"??

And for a little more double standard... if you look at pictures of people on the streets in observant Muslim cultures, the men are wearing flowing white robes ( if they aren't wearing jeans) and the women are wearing black. Hmmm. Wonder which group feels more comfortable in those hot, sunny climates...

I really wish mainstream feminists in western societies would be more vocal about this stuff!”

Obama: Congress Must "Seize This Opportunity" On Health Care (VIDEO)

Commented Jul 18, 2009 at 09:22:04 in Politics

“I'm a Dem who voted for Obama and believes that fixing healthcare is key to restoring the economy. But I'm concerned about the rush to pass this bill. As I understand it, the bill is loaded with money for things like parks, bike trails, and playground lights, which are supposed to be "preventive" health measures. Please!!! Much as I personally think those things are important, they are not critical for a healthcare plan! Furthermore, they give critics plenty to lambaste. I want this done, but I want it done right.”

VikingQuest replied on Jul 18, 2009 at 09:28:55

“The rush to pass the bill is no different than TARP or the Stimulus Package . . . they don't want people to start picking it apart and actually finding out what is in it because then the public support drops.

If you read the details, it isn't supposed to begin until 2013 so the hurry is beyond me.

I think it is a cheap way of doing things but the good thing is there can't be any finger pointing at the end of the day so if it works, Dems get all the credit . . . if it flops then they get all the blame.”

Todd Purdum Discusses His Vanity Fair Article On Palin: "Desperate" Decision That Revealed McCain's "Appalling Egotism" To His Staffers

Commented Jul 03, 2009 at 10:45:41 in Media

“I don't disagree with most of the commentary/criticism of McCain and Palin here. However, the emerging narrative misses a VERY important point...McCain didn't lose the election because of Palin. He lost because the economy went south shortly after the Republican Convention. And, correspondingly, Obama won as a result of a "throw-the-bums-out" backlash.”

OutragedMom replied on Jul 06, 2009 at 07:52:51

Obama Repeatedly Reminds House GOP Of Their Zero Stimulus Votes

Commented Apr 27, 2009 at 06:39:37 in Politics

“I am cheered (dare I say hopeful?) by the toughness Obama has begun to display in a variety of arenas over the last few weeks. He is (finally) telling the Republicans that they have a choice to either work with him or become irrelevant. In addition, he and SOS Clinton have made it clear to Israel's new right-wing government that they would have to change their tune re: a two-state solution. And it sounds like they may have started to read the riot act to the Pakistani government about dealing with the increasing threat of the Taliban (and presumably al Quaeda).

On the other hand, I'm still not seeing the kind of toughness that I think the banking crisis requires, as the NYT reports that compensation levels are bouncing back to 2007 levels. What planet do those people live on? I know...Planet Me-Me-Me, populated by the totally clueless. I mean, do they really want to see people camped out on their front porches with pitchforks? Wasn't the AIG bonus fallout enough of a wakeup call?”

Graham: Nationalizing Banks Should Be On The Table

Commented Feb 17, 2009 at 09:54:27 in Politics

“I don't understand this comment. By suggesting that nationalization of banks should be seriously considered, Graham is taking a more liberal/progresive approach than Obama or Schumer!”

SEQUOIABISON replied on Feb 17, 2009 at 11:17:57

“I am still not clear about whether or not nationalizing banks is a good thing, the ramifications of this would have to be examined very carefully, not sure if it would be a liberal or a conservative move, it would depend upon the arrangements for executives etc. I am always suspicious of the motives of any extreme conservative like Graham the war Hawk.

But my basic gripe with Graham has more to do with his whining about how Obama will destroy the country with this stimulus package and how he claims the president lied about bipartisanship with his Lloyd Benston type of ranting and how he knows bipartisanship and this is not bipartisanship.

His ideas along with McCains have been rejected and we democrats can certainly not expect any cooperation from him or the sore loser McCain, just partisan rhetoric and attempts to undermine our new president.”

I don't like being fooled with the facial expressions and raising the hands as if they are struggling to hit certain notes, when all they're doing is faking it.

Jennifer did a much better job of lip-synching.
Faith Hill's mouth missed a few notes and it was obvious that she wasn't really singing.”

“This is an inane comment, roger. Yes, Hamas is evil; but they have no cluster bombs. So far there are over 500 Palestinians dead, many of them civilians (perhaps 100 children), There are about 12 dead on the Israeli side, and three of those are via "friendly fire". Where is your sense of proportion?”

austinallan replied on Jan 06, 2009 at 15:06:56

“War is hell. Do you have any idea how many innocent civilians were killed by the US military in WW2. The difference between Israel and Hamas is that Hamas is deliberately targeting civilians while Israel is trying to minimize civilian casualties. The lopsided numbers of killed and wounded has nothing to do with the morality of the situation only the relative strengths of the parties involved.”
